So I'm looking at selling my Mauser (3rd from top, the one with the scope and recoil pad) for $350. It's my "long range" rifle, and If I sell I'll be looking for something to replace that role.

Question is; What gun should I get to fill that role? Ideally at or under $350, and something I'd be able to pick up locally.
>>
>>29820605

Don't sell it, fuckstick

You WILL regret it

You will NOT find something better for that price
>>
>>29820628
>>29820629

As much as I'd love to keep it, 8mm Mauser is pretty much the same if not harder to get compared to .30-06, and if I get a rifle in .30-06 I'll have ammo commonality with my 03A3 and the Garand I'll be getting soon

Is there something fundamentally wrong with new rifles?
>>
I don't give a shit about your Mauser sale, but you have a nice ass collection. Wood furniture is my fetish
>>
>>29820696

Do you reload?

Savage 110.

Honestly man, Modern Rifles are so fucking boring and sub-par (at that price at least) You might be able to get a Winchester 70 for 350 but you are better off just keeping the Mauser
>>
>>29820852

Not yet, it would honestly make sense if I were to to common caliber. But it would also make sense if I stayed with 8mm

I'll take that top one off your hands for free
>>
>>29820879

Here's the thing. For >350 you can easily be reloading super-accurate 8mm, and on top of that, you can make 8mm brass out of 30-06.

I'm telling you, selling that Mauser for a ho-hum bottom of the line hunting rifle will only bring you heartache.

For real though, if you're firing full rifle cartridges on even a semi-regular basis, it's worth at least having a basic reloading setup, even if you only use it for a caliber or two. For full rifle cartridges you can't help but save money, plus it's fun and Youtube will teach you everything you need to know and then some.

Get into reloading immediately if you're serious about shooting.
Then get a ruger predator in 6.5creed for $550 as your cheapest possible starting option for a long range/precision rifle.

>>
>>29820605
savage axis 308
>>
>>29820878
Sub par compared to what? Even the cheapest modern hunting rifle will outshoot any standard service rifle of WW2, it's a simple matter of design. Not nessicarily build quality but design developments and focus.

Unless you're invading Russia a surplus rifle is the sup par option.

Thanks, Only reason I haven't gotten into reloading is because I'm a college student living in an apartment. Don't have much money so I've just settled to bulk ammo orders and new guns.

>>29820966
Not made of money. I'd rather stay away from calibers I have to reload to not have to starve myself

Thanks for the input Everyone. Only reason it came to mind was that I hadn't taken down the armslist listing and some guy offered to buy it. Told him I'd sleep on it, but I figure if I have to pause to think about it, I don't really want to sell it

Pic is the latest group I got from the Mauser, the other holes are from an 03A3 that has a min range setting of 200 yards shooting at a target about a foot below it.
>>
sell the mauser, add a little extra money and buy a savage 10FP
>>
>>29821047

desu senpai? Stop buying new guns and focus on sustaining the collection you have, which is solid as fuck.

Buy a basic Lee single-stage press, a set of RCBS 8mm dies, some powder and some primers. You can bolt the press to a 2x8 and use clamps to fix it to a countertop, and boom. No more spending a shitload on 8mm ever again. And if you're about to pick up a Garand, which I won't tell you NOT to do because it's a fucking Garand and you'll give it to your grandkids, you don't want to pay full store price for that M2 ball.

>Don't have much money so I've just settled to bulk ammo orders and new guns.
>10 firearms worth thousands
>poor

Not gonna lie it SJW triggers me when spoiled white college kids say they're "poor"

You've never known the struggle
>>
>>29821047
What range? If that's past 50yd you've got the most accurate Mauser I've ever seen.
>>
>>29821088
>worth thousands

Oh boy that's funny m8

>>29821091
100 yards, padded bench rest. Honestly the best I've ever gotten out of it.
>>
>>29821047
There are tons of compact setups, go to a thrift store, get a cheap solid wood stool or desk and just bolt on a cheap single stage loading press. For less than 150 bucks you could be cranking out match grade bullets for 20 cpr chilling in front of your TV or shitposting on 4chan.

How much did you pay for that Springfield and when did you buy it?
>>
>>29821105
A modern rifle that's built for precision will cut that group by a 1/3rd out of the box, but that's fantastic for a Mauser, I'd say sleep on it for sure. Maybe try to shoot a few more groups like that with your most consistent ammo, if she shoots more groups like that then don't sell it because you'll be able to squeeze even more precision out of it with handloads.
>>
>>29821091
I'm not sure if I should be shocked or appalled...I've seen old sevens and eights easily doing cloverleafs at 100 yards.
>>
>>29821106
i wouldn't recommend reloading distracted
>>
>>29820605
Don't sell it, OP. Every functional longarm you have in any non-snowflake caliber is a lifetime investment, and just because the current market is reassuringly soft doesn't mean there isn't a tidal wave of draconian bullshit coming. It is.

>3 shots kinda touching

I'm almost certin you've never spent much time with a rifle that's actually built for precision.
>>
>>29821088

sorry I forgot my explanation here >>29821105

>Mosin $175
>Marlin 25n $100
>Mauser 24/47 with scope mount and work ~$350
>AR - Traded with a VZ-2008 bundle when they were $420, furniture was $250 so a total of $670
>Mossy500 - $300
>03A3 - $800
>Rossi R92 - Traded C93 for it about $650
>

Actually, never mind, you're right. I've just built this collection up over years and good deal hunting... I just don't have any ammo for half these guns it seems

>>29821129
$700 back in December

>>29821137
This might get me into handloading since the ammo used was the Yugo "Sniper" ammo, the Stock is bedded and the mount is as tight as I possibly could (and I don't want to further bubba, that's a story in it's own). It's often a little larger of a group but it's always within of 1MOA
>>
>>29821188

It was 5 shots....
>>
>>29821189

OP here are your community generated results

Don't sell Mauser
Do start handloading

And this is night /k/, so we at least halfway know what we're talking about
>>
>>29821188
>.22

That's cute
>>
>>29821189
>it's bedded
That makes complete sense seeing how accurate it is, maybe consider free floating the barrel to get the most out of it but that would further the bubba.
Handloads tailored to the dimensions of that particular Mauser will really help the groups. Never loaded for 8mm but I've loaded for many from .338lm to .223, it's a requirement for all my ammo now.

do you have any calibers and a scale capable of resolving grains?
>>
>>29821259
>Calipers
Nope
>Scale
Nope

I really should get both.
>>
>>29821198
And that's 10.
Do you have any proof of this magic factory Mauser or is it just internet hearsay like every other claim of "cloverleafs!"?
>>29821225
>.22
>.223
Fixed that for you :P
>>
>>29821154
Obviously check you work, I just do everything in stages
>watch tv
>deprime 100
>prime 100
>resize 100 every third reload
>powder throw 100
>stop
>make sure no double throws with cheapo led light
>flare 100
>seat 100
>crimp 100
Like meditation but actually productive.
>>
>>29821285
Those are both prerequisites for reloading, only reason I ask is because I was going to tell you to pull three - ten of the Yugoslav loads to weigh powder/case/bullet and establish an average, then weigh the factory ammo and sort by weight, only shoot the ones that are the same weight.

>this is how I used to sort .22's for match shooting
>>
>>29821285
Honestly op sell the lever gun & the single action and get a good reloading setup. Those both look to be basic easily replaceable guns that are both 1.) harder to legislate & 2.) cost more money over time than a setup.
>tdlr: sell the guns Hillary & Bernie want you to have so you can get the thing they really don't want you to have, your own 'ammo factory'
