So I'm in the market for a big bore AR and I was wondering if people could give me their experiences with them. I'm leaning towards the .458 SOCOM and I'd like to suppress it. I wanted to use it for targets and hunting hogs.
>>
>>29748334
.458 socom ammo costs like twice as much as .50 beo. Plus you can get the ball tickling satisfaction of having a half inch projectile. .458 is just spending a shit load to come really close to owning the biggest caliber ar you can but not quite making it imo
>>
Those rounds look so funny with their little rims. Like an elephant standing on a stool
>>
>>29748644
If I got either, would it be ridiculous for home defense? How would it perform out of a 10 inch barrel?
>>
>>29748644
If you're reloading (which you should be for such a niche round) .458 Socom is the far superior choice. Brass, price, and projectile selection are way better than .50 Beowulf.
>>
.300 Blackout is the only big bore AR caliber you need. It has great defensive and hunting loads. And the price isn't so bad either.
>>
>>29748704

This is kinda where I'm at too. Looking to do my first SBR ar as a 458.
>>
>>29748730
Nice dude, LAR-458? If so, which one?
>>
>>29748719
He didn't ask for the meme version of 7.62x39.

>people think .308 is big bore.
Gross.

Anyways, 458 socom is the most practical choice for he large selection of bullet available for reloading it.
>>
>>29748704
That's a good point I didn't think about. I did a quick search on gb and came up with these and was pretty shocked.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=554911181
50rds .458 = $135
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=555236407
100rds .50 = $150
>>
>>29748334
what's the point of .499 LWR next to 50 Beowulf ?

the sorta spitzer bullet ?
>>
Home defense would go to 458 imo. 50 Beowulf would go through the nigger, the Jew next door, and the gook down the street. Of course a 12 gauge with #4 is a more viable option.
>>
>>29748334
458 socom is your best bet.
If you don't reload you should start.
The performance gain in a 10 inch vs 16 inch is pretty small for the 458. A 10 inch sbr is a pretty good choice for the 458.
>>
>>29748334
Don't buy the Hybrid. You need a MUCH higher volume can for .458 SOCOM.
>>29748644
.50 beo is proprietary cabbage
.458 socom is much cheaper to reload, and as such is likely to get cheaper in the future.
>>
Why doesn't SOF actually use .458 SOCOM?

Did the money just not come through? Seems like a pretty neat round

You do realize that 458 is slightly more powerful than 50 Beowulf, right?

Also, I have a 458 Socom and it is fun. If you don't reload I would buy the Beowulf or not buy any big bore AR at all. If you do reload the 458 is by far the most economical choice.
>>
Can I build a .458 upper for less than 600$?
>>
i am a fan of the beowolf.

you can get brass from Alexander arms for $63.00 per 100. Dies are $99 for hornady or $58 for lee
bullets are $27 per 50 from hornady, less if you reload and powdercoat.

in 458 brass is much higher priced from what im finding. and bullets are about the same price.

Im saving my sheckles for the

499 is essentially dead. It preceded the 50b, but the marketing wasn't there.
>>
Go with Beowulf.

It was in stock at Cabelas during the panic.

Uses S&W .500 bullets with loads.

Has stood the test of time.
>>
>>29750868

Brass is $0.20 more per but also lasts longer (also headspaces on shoulder = easier to work with, less / no trimming as well)

Bullets are generally cheaper for the 458. At midway right now both the FTX types are on sale and practically the same price, but you can get the remington jsps or hornady jsps for less for the 45s. Also, there are far, far more commercial cast bullet options and an incredibly higher number of bullet molds if you cast your own.

Also, hornady 458 dies are $40 right now.

In reality the cost per round to reload them isn't THAT different, but there are a lot of smaller features that make the 458 the more versatile cartridge in general, owing both to availability of components and the range of types of bullets out there.

458 also works with standard AR buffers and springs with no issues and in my experience with the 450, 50, and 458 the 458 is less magazine sensitive as well.

Pic related, my bargain basement 458 Socom.

I figured I would buy a cheap upper to see if I liked the cartridge before going in, so I got a Radical Firearms for around $400.

I'm about 2k rounds in and it has been accurate, reliable, and pleasant to shoot. I killed a bear with it a few months ago. I don't shoot it THAT much so I don't see any need to upgrade. My only complain is that the finish is sort of prone to scratching, but it's a working gun so I don't really care. It's pretty light but the big brake handles recoil very well.

The handguard is actually fantastic and I love the design.

It's not my highest quality AR by any means but it has been a great shooter and it's about the only AR I shoot nowadays (kind of bored of the platform)

How flat does .458 socom shoot and how does it compare to 45-70? My STP is exactly the same size as an ar15. I've always thought about getting an ar in .458 but if its performance is so close to 45.70 I wouldn't.

The main load that I shoot in the marlin is the 405 grain remington, kicks less than the ar but it has a hell of a rainbow for balistics.
>>
>>29751661
>How flat does .458 socom shoot
Can you say mortar?
Really depends upon the load. Get some 100gr lehigh aluminum bullets and it's pretty flat shooting. 500+gr subsonic, and its lobbing them in there to the tune of more than a 3' drop at 200yds with a 100yd zero.

Since it can use the same bullets as the 45-70, if loaded to the same velocities, of course they'll be the same. Top end 458 Socom is no where near top end 45-70, though.
>>
>>29750568
Why would they. Thing about the utility (of lack thereof) of big 7 shot at for a SF unit. Wtf is that going to do for them that they can't accomplish with a SCAR-H or 7.62 mg
>>
I just want a 9x39 AR
>>
>>29751846
Yes I see that now, it appears that across all loadings on average the .458 socom is about 300 fps slower that the 45-70 while 45-70 is about a dollar per round cheaper except for the buffalo bore loads.
>>
>>29751967
Whats stopping you?
>>
>>29751846
How does .50 beo compare?
>>
>>29752028

You can't fit 4570 in ar15 though, but I get what you are saying. Modern high power 4570s are closer to elephant gun loads than the originally designed BP loads.
>>
>>29748745

No fucking idea yet I want to build it as much as I can from parts separately.
>>
I'd like an AR in 450 Bushmaster. I reload so it'd be cheap as shit and easy. Straight walled case so they last for a long time and trimming is minimal. Cheap and plentiful .452 bullets. 230g ball at 2500 fps. Heavy .458 rifle bullets could easily be swaged down a couple thousandths to use in the smaller bore without overpressure.
>>
>>29752973
Why is that? Is it more cost effective? I'm not familiar with ARs.
>>
>>29753287
I about did until I saw you need 450 bush mags.
>>
>>29753326
It's easy enough to mod cheap GI mags to work. If you fuck it up, trash it and do another. They're only $8-10 each.
>>
get one of these https://youtu.be/C_dtC6ZOR3w?t=9 also define "big bore"
>>
How is 450 bushmaster on price?
>>
>>29756855
yeah why has no-one opted for .450 Bushmaster? Purely price based or performance wise?
