Could it ever have worked, /k/?

Material science has been proceeding at breakneck pace recently. Is it possible to revisit the G11 concept and make it into a viable option for the US military?

Not enough rails.
>>
>>29721868
On behalf of the US Military, we don't want it
>>
>>29721904
Explain why.
>>
Little to no customisation
Careless ammo still has too many drawbacks for infantry weapons
Maybe for a paratrooper weapon but the m4 has solved that
So really it's a gimmick gun that is very lite

The weekly H and K cock-sucking thread is here everyone!

H and K sucks.
H and K hates civilians.
H unt K can't build guns for shit.

They copied a Spanish nazi company to make the P7 and the G3 and that's their only claim to fame.
>>
>>29721868
I will never not love that the G11 and all variants are banned by name in Canadaland.

Nobody wants to operate with a rectangular prism
Everybody would have to be retrained on the new system
Have you seen how many fucking moving parts are in that gun???
Have to adopt the new cartridge
S-Shops bullshit
We. Don't. Want. It

The same could be said for literally any gun of its time. When the G11 was being developed, flat top ARs would not come into widespread use for another 15-20 years and integrated optics were the new meta. Thats like complaining that nuggets didn't leave the factory with M-lok preinstalled, it simply wasn't a thing at the time that was even considered when making a service rifle.
>>
>>29722569
Nuggets are also a century or more old.
>>
>>29722660
It's amazing how many perennially popular guns are around that old, really. That or how little separates some of them conceptually from newer upgrades.

There are probably quite a few people still using Kar98's and those are from 1898, for instance.

What do you mean "could have"? It was ready for serial production when it was cancelled. The Cold War ended, reunification happened. The need for arms dropped drastically and the need for money to prop up East Germany rose.

>viable option

Haha, no.

Even if everything on it was made from the latest and greatest in ceramics, polymers, and 3D-printing, it'd still be a complete prima donna of a rifle. I mean, just look at the fucking internals. That many critical moving parts means that something is bound to break that can't be fixed. The logistics of fielding it would have to be insane. Not to mention the problems that still follow caseless ammunition (fragility, sensitivity to heat and moisture, etc.) would put further strains on any army fielding it.

Caseless is an interesting concept for a rifle, but please, please, any platform but the G11. It's a fantastic technology demonstrator, but would be utterly useless as a service rifle.
>>
>>29723503
Reminds me of a Mauser C96, and the Mauser C96 is pretty damn reliable.
>>
>>29721868
Truth is, there's no need for it atm. For the role that infantry plays nowadays, most service rifles are enough. The money would be better in a lot of other places. With that said, i dont think it could be made into a perfectly functional gun yet.
>>
>>29724144
There's always a need to improve small arms as they're among the most important weapons in the arsenal of a military.
