.308 or 30-06 with 180-grain bonded bullets. Because they're affordable and won't kick the shit out of you and they'll get the job done. Shit, I'd use my 25-06 on a big bull elk out to maybe 150 yards with no hesitation at all, after seeing what 120-grain Speer Grand Slams do to things. Pic related.

Depends on the ranges you'll be hunting at anon

I use a .270 Win with 150 grain bullets and it will do the job out to 500 yards or more if you're a decent shot.

.30-06 with 165's perform almost identically to the .270 and the .30-06 is way more versatile for North American game if you reload.

.45-70 is a great option for brush and close in but isn't very flat shooting at ranges past 200 yards

.338 Win Mag is the elk hunt king. It'll knock an elk on his ass at 500+ yards and gives you a wider margin for error than a .270 or .30-06.

Don't waste your time on the 7mm Rem or .300 Win mag, they don't really give you much more than a .270 or a .30-06 except a little flatter trajectory in the same bullet weight at the cost of a lot more recoil.

If you're gonna shoot a magnum, go for the .338 and don't be a pussy.

.270 140gr

180gr nosler partition .308. $2 a shot but when you think of what a box of 20 can do for you...that's not bad.
