You should get a .17HMR. Not super cheap like .22LR but it can often be found for $12 for 50 and its quite the potent little varmint cartridge. Can still be found regularly anywhere and everywhere.

picked up 325 rounds for $20 at my lgs. It's not hard to find 22 and it's not expensive.

There's plenty of .22 around here.
