I heard some interest in restarting PSG on /k/

So, to see how it'll go... here's a trial one.

I just got my precision AR back from the smith tonight--got some barrel work and cerakoted the stainless barrel black, then had a YHM Diamond Free Float quadrail installed.

I think it looks rather like a babby SR-25 in black.

Danka.

I'm really liking the new tactical look vs the old varmint look.
>>
I want to get into precision/long range shooting. Should I go for a 5.56 or .308 build?

Very nice set up amigo. These two are my long rang babies. I'm still practicing the long range stuff, so far I've been mainly working on load development for the two without getting as much shoot time as I'd like, but I think I've developed a reload recipe they both like to shoot.

JP AR .223 and a heavily Modified Howa 1500 30.06
>>
>>29520810
Depends on several factors really:

Budget - .308 will be a lot more expensive to shoot and load, there are more parts and rifle setups available in .223 then there are in .308, particularly if you want to do an AR style setup.

Range - If you have access to a 300+ yard range then .308 makes more sense.

Bolt vs AR - Kinda goes back to the budget thing, but building a bolt gun for either caliber will be cheaper than an AR, but the .308 in particular will be a lot more expensive and finicky to find a load it likes.
>>
>>29520810

You can get to ~800 yds with the right setup in 5.56 using a 77 gr OTM. Ammo will be cheaper than 308, especially if you hand load. If you're not able to shoot further than that, then 5.56 is the most economical option for just punching paper.

308 can go a little further, and will be better for hunting, but costs more.

>>29520862

good looking setup, but how do you plan to use those BUIS with a non-QD mount? You should look into some offset BUIS or a QD mount.
>>
>>29520886
I'd prefer AR platform and don't reload so looks like 5.56 would be the better choice for me.

What would you say a good budget estimate is for a decent build for a first distance build? Also if you have any build guides/parts recommendations that'd be great.

Get a white oak upper, that's just about the best you can get short of a custom gun.

>>
>>29520912
Yeah I really need to get around to doing that, that was my very first AR build and I was kind of slapping things on there without really thinking about logistics or tools. I'll probably do an offset setup honestly, I like the riser where it is and I haven't had good luck with the QD PEPR mount on my Sig 516, seems to rattle a bit no matter how much I tighten it.

>>29520913
>>29520931
Damn yeah he got to me before I could make a recommendation. I kind of splurged on my JP, but if you can get your hands on something like White oak or JP you're set. then it's just a matter of whatever lower you want to pair it with. Trigger upgrade would be a good idea though. Either a Geisselle or Timney trigger upgrade is recommended imo.

I went with a 3lb Skeletonized Timney and it breaks just like my 30.06 bolt gun. Nice and crisp.
http://www.timneytriggers.com/shop/timney-ar-15-skeletonized-replacement-trigger.aspx

It is pricey as balls, and yes you can do cheaper, this was just something I really splurged on due to a nice tax return.

>>29520969
Both noted, thanks. I'm assuming lower doesn't matter too much; I have a couple of Spike's lowers from some half-finished 16" builds that I could use.

No, any lower will be fine, just get an Anderson if you don't care about roll marks.

Don't skimp on the trigger though. I really like a 2 stage trigger on an automatic (and a single stage on a bolt action).

The cheapest I'd go on a trigger is a Rock River National Match

But I can't recommend Geissle enough, I have an SSA, and it's worth every penny.

Going further, if you want to do precision with an AR here's something's I'd look for:

Barrel:

Minimum Barrel length of 20" to get the most out of the Round, 24" is a bit overkill but it certainly won't hurt. Just don't go below 20

Twist Rate - 1-7 or 1-8 This will allow you to shoot the heavier 69gr or 77gr matchking rounds and get the best results out of them.

Barrel Style - Heavy and/or stainless steel. You want your barrel to be as stiff as possible to better assist in shots. It will be heavier than a regular AR, but precision shooting you're going to be shooting from the ground or a bench anyway so it shouldn't matter as much.

Trigger - As I mentioned earlier, a good trigger is a definite bonus, Timney and Geiselle make great ones though those are the only ones I have experience with so I don't know of any cheaper options sadly. Try to get one with a pull weight or 4lbs or less to better assist with trigger pull.

>>29521008
Yup, the lowers can be whatever you have on hand, just consider upgrading the trigger and you should be good to go.

>>29521047
Do you need an adapter for a bipod on those types of guards, or are there pre-drilled holes? Never used anything other than a railed guard but I like the look of the smooth cylinders.
>>
>>29521114
Depends on the model, the one that paths linked has what's called swivel stud, so whatever bipod you pick will need a "swivel stud adapter" or should mention that on the packaging.

white oak doesn't ship their uppers with a sling swivel, you have to get a rail adapter from them--they use a proprietary mounting system.

From there, an atlas or larue bipod will bolt right on. If you want to use a vanilla Harris, you'll need a sling swivel to picatinny adapter

Pretty spendy.

I assume it's in 308? Do they even offer them in 6.5CM yet? If not, they should.
>>

.308
>>
>>29521228

Tried running any of the new 175gr SMK through it yet? I've been using 168, but I just got a box of 175s to see if the improved trans sonic transition is the real deal.

>>29521301

You know, laying pipe...
>>
>>29521267
I only use 175gr FGMM in it, but I have only shot it out to 700m here.
>>
>>29521315

I'm launching my 308 from an 18.5" barrel, so I enter trans sonic just shy of 800 yds with 168gr.

It's a little further with a 175gr, it's in the air longer getting toyed with by the wind.

I really need to take both to the 1k us mark and get some real data on how they both group at range.
