Anyone here ever dreamed of owning a fighter jet, even just for display?
>>
>>29481800
No.
>>
>>29481800
yes
>>
>>29481800
Yes.

You can find used migs for less than $100,000, sometimes much less.

It would take a lot of money to keep them flying, but if you just wanted it mounted in your front yard, pointed menacingly at your least favorite neighbor...
>>
>>29481800
There is a mother fucker down my street with a mig fuselage in his back yard. He also has a variety of terrifying shit all over the place
>>
>>29481921
Go take a picture
>>
>>29481929
Do you want me to be killed?
>>
>>29481969

>>
Not a fighter jet, but I've often thought that if I had infinite money one of the first things on my list would be to get my own SR-71.

I live near Castle Air Museum here in California. There's an SR-71 that I pass by every week to work. It's fucking awesome, beautiful, beautiful plane. It's like something out of a scifi movie.

Don't know if I'd say "fighter" jet or "display", but I'm slowly working toward an L-29 for fun and racing.
>>

Just post a picture from Google Maps Streetview
>>
I'd rather just have a Cessna or a helicopter.
Even if I could afford a plane, the hanger fees and maintenance would be too much for me.
>>
I'm waiting for the A-10 to retire, then I plan on buying one of the airframes at auction.

I will display it in my front yard proudly.

No, no one.

I don't think you understand what OP means. Nobody short of multi-millionaires would be able to actually maintain them. The rest of us are talking about a static display.
>>
>>29481800
are you saying there have been moments in your life you have *NOT* dreamed of owning a fighter jet?
>>
>>29482507

Emigrate. If you want something in life, take it.
>>
>>29482570
also: yes I have dreamed of owning one, in fact I'd like to own all kinds of things & put them on display in my yard, I think I could start small, like with an 81mm mortar (or 120mm if I can find one), then get something like 95 S 58–61 recoilless rifle, maybe get some slavshit APCs/IFVs, then finally get something like a MiG-21bis, or perhaps even one of F/A-18C/Ds if I can find the money to buy a stripped one from FiAF after they are replaced & before someone gets the bright idea of selling them for scraps.
>>
ever since my father and I made a model of one. It's all I've ever wanted.

If I had one I would keep it so quiet and then surprise my father with a flight in it.
>>

i used to volunteer at a local airfeild museum.
>field is a few blocks from my college
>used to be AFB from WW2 until the 80's
>go up during lunch/between classes to help catalogue shit people donated/rearrange displays
>get an A37 dragonfly on loan to display
>all the old vietnam pilots who work there are playing with it and making jokes
>one of them pulls an emergency cable to spook the others
>chair punches hole in the celing and leaves a cloud of smoke that fills the whole room
>one of them dumps a fire extinguisher on us, the cockpit, and anything else nearby
>they spend the next few hours arguing if those were even in there originally and who would be dumb enough to leave it there

Absolutely fucking stupid choice that was. What were they thinking the Iranians would do? Walk into some boneyard with handtruck and take parts?
At least a fair number of them are preserved in museums, but the fact none fly makes me incredibly sad.
I honestly think the only reason they were scrapped was to prevent Northrop-Grumman from being able to modernize them and to force the Navy to buy into something new.

dream of mine is to co-own a soviet jet with my father.

Im hoping that by the time I have the cash to spare (and the time, space, knowledge of how to maintain one ect...), Mig 21's will be cheap as fuck after all the world's air forces retire them and start selling off the ones they don't want to keep in storage.

I've already told my father that he should expect fly by's on his cottage whenever he stays there if I ever get the Fishbed.

But any military jet that's cheap and easy to handle will do (L-39's would be sweet too)

>Just a quick 5 mile drive
>Arrive at the sellers house
>Wasn't really paying attention to what we are getting
>Seller opens his garage which was abnormally huge
>As it opens mfw sees a fucking F-15
>Dead silence between me and my pops
>Seller says it isn't real
>Seller makes full sized replicas just because he can
It may not been exact sized but, it looked so fucking real.

>>
>>29485769
Romanian air force will be retiring theirs soon, as will the Croats (though I wouldn't want the ones that the Ukies "refurbished").

I'd need to buy a Fishbed when its both widely available and old enough so that other air forces don't want em. That's when they'll be cheap.

In all honesty this is just a dream I tell myself at night so I work harder. I'd be perfectly happy with a turbo prop though or even a mini home made jet.

my friend Mykola from Ukraine has a Tu-160 he'd use to play tag with the Ukrainian Air force, now everyone's telling him he can't do that for the time being, some BS about it being too dangerous...
>>
>>29485876
>dad chilling at lake house, gets phone call
>over the roars of the engine a soft "i'll be there in twenty minutes" is heard being slurred followed by violent puking
>all of lake Shushwap is alive with the sound of a giant roaring engine
>People panic, think its an earthquake
>TU-95 does a flyby almost at ground level, causing tsunami tear waves to capsize all the lake boats
>"FEAR THE BEAR" is heard over the phone before the TU-95 crashes onto the side of the mountain
>several fragments of vodka bottles amounting to at least fifteen bottles are found at the crash site, assumed to have been on the flight

>>29485963
care to elaborate? I made out that your friend had a TU-160, but that sounds wayyy to fucking good to be true.
>>
>>29485978
>but that sounds wayyy to fucking good to be true.
This, if he claimed to have any of the fucktons of various fighter types knocking around I'd buy the story, but a large complex aircraft of which only a small number were ever built, and the scrapping of which in his country was part of a international agreement? Of all the bullshit that gets posted on /k/ this is among the fishiest smelling.
If he claimed his mate used to fly them prior to scrapping and would fuck around with it doing flybys of friends/family it'd be more believable.
>>
>>29483127
There's something called the "black market" anon. If you want something it's probably there. And they had allowed the F-14 to sit in some boneyard, chances, some parts would have made their way to Iran in some way.
>>
>>29481899
Museum grade flyable MiG 17s can be found for as low as 50k...
>>
>>29485737
Yeah, I'd love a mig21. India should be retiring their fleet soon, so there should be a bunch on the market soon.

I hear the engines have a very short lifespan between rebuilds tho.

I think the tiger is probably better on maintenance costs, but you pay a lot more upfront.

Tiger just doesn't have the brutalistic, "Look Ivan we put cockpit on jet engine" soviet aesthetic tho.
>>
>>29486488
Soviets put cockpits on engines, Americans put a cockpit, wings and engines on a gun and christened it Warthog
>>
>>29482128

There was a picture floating around a while ago of some soviet block houses built up around some old Soviet iron. I dont have the pic saved. I think one of them was a MiG-25 and the other was a TU-22.

So its not outside the realm of possibilities. A lot of old Soviet gear got lost after they broke up.

In 2008 my city was selling a CL-13 Sabre Mk. V that was on display downtown. It wasn't operational and they didn't want to pay to maintain it. They were giving it away for next to nothing and I considered buying it until I found out the environmental regulations were retarded and you had to have insurance out the ass for it. It was an insane burden so no wonder the city wanted it gone for next to nothing.
