This is true. I was a deputy in Lexington Co, SC, for 8 years, and left the department as a corporal. I reported some suspicions about our sheriff, Jim Metts, was helping illegals after the file to one of my cases was lost. Reported it to my LT, who said "Don't bring it up again." That particular stat was really revealing to me as someone who was interested in the argument.

If the statistics back it I can completely understand a movement aimed around reducing the amount of handguns on the street if indeed they are being used in a massive share of gun crime and I can completely understand trying to regulate them via background checks etc.

What I can't understand is the emotional kneejerk attraction that people have to try to ban assault rifles if they are statistically a tiny part of the problem. There must be many other things (that don't provide the safety net that the 2nd amendment does) that take lives of burgers everyday that could be addressed before you get to the point on the list where assault rifles are. I think most people are idealistic and liberal at some stage in their life, mostly when they are young and still learning about the world. Sure there are plenty of older ones but my point is most people are liberal thinkers when they are young.

Now on the face of it without the stats being explained to them these liberal idealists won't see any harm done in getting these nasty assault rifles out of the hands of the average joe.

I don't think its that they are stupid or massively driven by emotion etc I think it comes down to a couple of things.

1 - They don't value your hobby when they balance it against the perceived damage nutters do with the tools of that hobby

2. They don't believe the 2nd amendment is an important or relevant justification for these tools of carnage being potentially in the hands of a nutter.

I disagree that you gun lads are doing enough to communicate the statistical inconsistencies with targeting assault rifles for banishment. I also don't think that there is enough communication about the importance of the 2nd amendment. This is a hard sell to a (not to talk down to them) naive idealist who can't imagine a government turning against the will of the people it governs. That said by the general sentiment regarding cops in this thread it seems like such a situation isn't outside of the realms of possibility.
