That part never made sense to me. Whenever people asked "how are the insurgents getting all those explosives?" the answer had to do with "weapons depots" being "looted." Okay... why not secure/destroy them instead?

It's to invade them all over again.

Gah, it's like you haven't been paying attention the last 30 years.
>>
>>29398290
Because the US set it all up.
Don't you realise planning for all of this began before the end of the cold war?

The end of the soviets flooded the market with weapons, so that insurgents could have them as they realised that a large conventional enemy like USSR could not defeat America in big war. So the fight had to change. After the shock of the Vietnamese fighting style it was realised the best way to wage war is to arm proxy rebellions and insurgencies.

Get rid of the dictators who keep it all in check and you have an easy way to wage perpetual war. After all, you can't killl everyone because its all over CNN, but what do you do when you're enemy look like innocent women and children?

Average soldier isn't dumb enough to piss of the CIA.

Because they belonged to the Iraqi government.
>>
>Why not take the weapons away from the Iraqi military so they HAVE to run from ISIS
Christ, anon, you're a fucking genius.

he's talking about 2003, moron.

There WAS no "Iraqi military" following the fall of Baghdad. The US military and CPA chief L. Paul Bremer disbanded them.

And when they were reconstituted, they weren't supplied from unguarded caves and warehouses full of old mortar shells.
>>
Would they even have known where the depots all are?

I remember from early on in the Syrian conflict, some rebel group found a cache of ammunition that had apparently just been forgotten about. It wasn't even a proper warehouse, just so bare concrete room the size of a large bedroom piled to the ceiling with crates of boolitz and shit.

Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld are complete morons.
It answers a lot of questions, really.

Numbers and perception.

There were a limited number of soldiers, lots of things to be secured. There was also a perception that there would be no insurgency. We were sold the idea that if we just get rid of the bad guy, the good muslims would take over and Iraq would end up a Middle Eastern version of Canada.

All these niggas is wrong.

Actually what had happened was we accidently some depots which are currently toxic from damaged chemical weapons.

Convential munitions depots were gay and we cbf m8

For a real, non-tarded answer, the US of curse tried to find and secure all of the weapons. That was a high priority.

The problem is that the US military was rolling into a country and causing its military to collapse. Soldiers and commanders of the local collapsing government either took weapons (for themselves or to sell) or fled and locals with insurgent tendencies got to the depots before the US.

You also have to factor in the fact that Iraq doesn't have the best record keeping to start with, and during the invasion was actively retorting its own records. Very easy to erase the already dodgy records of weapons depots.

Additional to that, insurgents also did have an influx of Chinese and other weapons purchased in cash thanks to insurgent backers.

The supply of ordnance was not infinite, and improvised explosives were/are used to supplant ordnance. Build a decently powerful but hard to initiate improvised explosive and use an small amount of military explosive as a booster to set it off, that stretches out the supply.

For starters, NOBODY knew where even half of them were
>2007 and we're finding official Iraqi Army weapons bunkers in the middle of the desert stacked floor to ceiling with mustard and tabun gas artillery shells that were buried under several feet of sand
>2009 and an IED goes off in Balad that wasn't an explosive, some goat herder found a small cave with artillery shells too rusted to read any markings on, turned out to be illumination rounds (this was funny AF to me, nobody hurt and the night lit up with red phosphorus for hours. I can only see Haji standing on a hill with detonator in hand going "WTF was that?")
