Do it, it's fun.
Just make sure you're patient with it and avoid frogtape.
I used frogtape for my black layer masking and rushed my light green layer and those are the two main flawed areas of my paintjob.
Fatman is still in the cards, It's just lowest priority behind bcg/ch/fa/sling/light since it'll make it insane to shoot and is $115.

If you wan't a general AR-15 with some mods. Then build your lower and pick a generic upper.

If you want an AR that is custom to your looks and need. Start from complete scratch. Also, and AR is NEVER done.

Implications of free float rail not covering low profile has block?

My rail is 9" and comes even to the back of the had block, tube is covered.

It's not what was intended or what I'm used to seeing. Kind of okay looking though, any reason it matters?

If you hit the gas block super hard you might dislodge it. You probably won't though.

Matrix Arms Cherlie rail, 13".
It's 12.5 to the deepest section of the "C" cut, and 13.5" from the rear of the rail to the front.

99% LC headstamp with the occasional WCC or FCC. It's still very very consistent, they use exclusively .mil brass so LC, WCC, and FCC all have the same case capacity. Also, I'm not 100% positive they crimp primer pockets on the reman (which is a good thing in my book).

Several years ago a local store had some of their 68gr Heavy Match reman (non-SMK 69gr SMK facsimile bullet, not sure whose, maybe their own?) for dirt cheap, and my 1:8 precision upper would shoot it repeatably into 3/4 MOA off bags and bench. I've shot their 69gr TMK reman loads side-by-side with their factory-new 69gr TMK and other than checking headstamps in the brass pile I couldn't tell a difference. If there's any variance it's at a level I can't shoot well enough to tell.

I've got an ALG SCB that I replaced a 3 pring with.
It's good, beautiful finish on it.
I haven't been able to shoot it rapid fire yet, but initial impressions at the indoor range are good.
>pic related
Rifle had the 3 prong, and it got replaced with the SCB.
TFB's brake test put the M4-72 as better than the SCB when it came to recoil reduction though.
>>29375382
It seems solid enough, my biggest beef with the rail is the lack of indexing tabs.
I might try to figure out if I can rig a KMR tab thingy into it somehow at some point.
>>

If you shoot a lot you will drive yourself crazy trying to reload on anything other than a progressive, and a good progressive setup is fucking expensive.

It is ultimately worth it though, especially if you shoot distance for groups or shoot magnum rifle/pistol rounds.

It seems like Cryptic bolt carrier groups are pretty popular in /arg/. It would be cool to run a census and see how many people actually own them. Reply to this post is you have one!

Has anyone ever had a problem with theirs besides the price?

Pros for me:
-Stupid easy to clean, will prob saving me hours of cleaning over the life of the bolt
-Super smooth action, with the bolt greased up it is noticeably slicker than the stock phosphate finish

Cons:
-The inside of the bolt chamber and gas key are lined with chrome not their coating. They say this is because chrome is easier to get constant amount of layering there.

They are definitely not necessary but if you are trying to go full Gucci then it is something you should consider.

Is it me or does everyone over estimate accuracy, I read a post from a guy saying he was getting 1.25" groups at 300 yards with his ar but he wasn't anything special, a sub moa AR is normally race gun territory yet everyone is always shooting at 1-1.5 moa which implies rifles of at least .5 moa less. Are these clowns measuring moa as a radius instead of diameter? I haven't even finished my AR so im not comparing this to my own ability or inability to shoot
>>
>>29377658
1.25" at 300? Yeah fucking right. I expect an AR to be an MOA rifle, no more no less. 1.25 at 300 is either, 1.25 at 100 but I'll say 300 to sound cool, or he is completely talking out his ass.
>>
>>29377658

I feel like some people will get lucky with a group and shoot like .75 moa even though the last 15 3 shot groups were 2 moa and be like yeah its a sub 1 moa rifle

I like both of my Hardened Arms uppers. I've got a 16" and a 10.5". I've shot around 1k through the two of them combined with flawless function. I'm not sure about accuracy as I haven't done any bench shooting or group size calculations but there was no problem zeroing at 50 yds.

There is an Anon on here with a 16" upper from them and he likes his. The barrels are not chrome lined however.

Good budget build option. Keep in mind they are 3-4 weeks out right now.

I put a KAK Flash Can on my 10.5" 5.56 build. If I had the foresight I would have instead tried this out:

http://www.amazon.com/Krinkov-Muzzle-Device-Pressure-Reducer/dp/B00C6ON82U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458923075&sr=8-1&keywords=ar-15+krink

The KAK Flash Can doesn't actually have a baffle, and is made from aluminum. What is linked legitimately has a baffle, just like the Noveske KX3, and it also is made of steel. If you don't mind adding 12oz (almost a pound) to the front of your rifle, it might be a better option.

Good luck!

Hey /arg/, I wanted to run the feasability of a stupid project by you.
So early in Vietnam, the first M16s had the wrong twist rate for the current shitty ball ammo resulting in extreme key-holing at closer ranges. Would there be a way to replicate this effect with a modern AR and ammo? Is there a certain ammo and twist rate combo that would achieve this effect? Thanks
>>
>>29378312
Isn't that technically a suppressor as it has a baffle?
>>
>>29378312
I put the flashcan on my FAL barrel because I wanted a long as fuck 9mm brake so I could go with a short action FAL, and not have a ton of extra barrel. Since the picatinny lowers sold out for now, I might just go ahead and SBR the upper, get the barrel cut a couple inches shorter and toss a 9mm lantac dragon on it. Who knows when the lowers I want are going to get back in stock, and if im going to wait, I mind as well wait for a stamp too.

Im well aware that the flashcan isnt really much of anything.
>>
>>29378368
depends if it makes the sound quieter or not. i think if it just redirects it forward but doesn't make it quieter its fine.
>>
>>29378322

1/12 twist rate with anything heavier than 55gr.
>>
>>29378097
It has NOTHING to do with mechanical accuracy.

Whether or not the fucker behind the rifle thinks it does or not may/may not make him shoot somewhat better though.

Also long barrels are worse for mechanical accuracy, all else being equal, due to extra barrel whip.

A long barrel does 3 things:
>balance
>extends the supersonic flight range
>look cool

They aren't cheap, but they're thought pretty highly of. I think they might be a little heavier too iirc, which makes them a better option for suppressed ARs. Will be fine in an unsuppressed one too though. It's also got two springs behind the extractor. Now that I think about it, I think the extra weight might be in the LMT enhanced carrier and the bolt is normal.

Silencer Shop has an extremely incomplete one.

Also the comparisons are...vague. There are so many factors that go into how quiet a can is that can't be easily repeated for a fair test that they're general ideas.

Also literally every suppressor maker either outright lies by a few dB or uses specialty ammo for their tests to produce true but non-repeatable low numbers.

Currently in my country, only these are legal to possess
>Colt AR-15 H-bar/Sporter
>Bushmaster mod. XM15
>Olympic Arms AR-15 H-bar,
>DPMS Panther Bull 24

I want to be able to modify in the future. I kinda like Colt, but due to their unique gray color, it seems like putting on different uppers will just look plain ugly.

So S&W is best choice? I want to be able to modify the buttstock so it got the more traditional A2 one

What's wrong with Bushmaster?
What's wrong with piston mechanism?
>>
>>29379236

Bushmaster has poor quality manufacturing and quality control. Not worth the investment, especially if it's difficult to own in your country.

Piston operated AR's offer no real advantages, and are certainly not worth the added cost.

Depending on which model M&P is available to you, that could be a good choice. The Oberland Arms is also likely good to go, and so is the JP. Stag and Armalite are so so on build quality.
>>
>>29379236
I'd say if you're gonna modify it the S&W is probably the best base.

>what's wrong with Bushmaster?
Had some massive QC issues a good number of years ago, soured their reputation. They're a bargain bin rifle company. They make polymer lowers (which universally suck).
>what's wrong with a piston mechanism?
The AR15 was not designed with a piston and as such shoehorning one into an AR15 introduces a couple issues while not providing any benefits.
>b-but muh shits where it eats
Gas vents out the bolt carrier and not into the receiver. Chamber fouling, what actually jams the gun, is the same as it's completely unrelated to the gas system.
>b-but muh HK fixed their carrier tilt
No they didn't. They mitigated it to the point where you probably won't have to replace the buffer tube for a few years, but it will still eventually need to be replaced just from normal usage.

so even if it's slightly overpriced I should opt for a basic bitch Colt?
>>
>>29379620
IMO the Ruger SR556 and the S&W M&P Sport II (definitely *not* the Sport I) are the best of the poorfag rifles.

They're normally about $400 less than a Colt 6920 and within a few bucks of a Windham.
>>
>>29379620

Not necessarily. The SR556 and M&P Sport II are both excellent rifles for the price. I have a friend and he bought 2 SR556s. They function very well. I helped him zero them and for the price I don't think it's a bad purchase in the slightest.

>>
>>29380350
I'm thinking onnaisland. Unnaground can be found, innawoods too. But onnaisland, there are a lot of them out there, you could potentially go far enough out and just build and no one would know for years. Al ot of smaller coral islands are only visited by passersby, if you built on one and anyone asked just say you own it now. What are they gonna do? Check?
>>
>>29380273
Not actually a lightweight build, it was a joke in the first post. There will be a bastardized handstop in front of the mvg which is the purpose of the long rail
>>
>>29380370
What kind of island? How'd you be self sustaining? Cannibalizing any stranded survivors that happen to show up?

I mean whatever works though
>>
>>29380411
Something small, way far out, prefereably with a cove for a small bluewater sailer. Big things are power, water and food.

Power can be solar or wind for lighting, cooking could be solar or go into port for propane.

Water is the tough one, the best is to just collect and store rainwater. Desalinating is very unsustainable.

Food is a bit easier, diet will have to be alter considerably. No more chicken tendies, well maybe every now and then. But most protein will come from local wildlife. A few fruits could be grown locally, most carbs would have to be imported in though. Luckily rice is cheap and bulk sale outlets can be found almost anywhere.

Provision runs can be done once or twice a year, I've got ways around getting just about any medication one would need. Of course you'll need family with you or just those that are like minded.

Being so far out and under the radar you could operate using flexible morals. Growing illicit substances for sale on the mainland, or the brewing a moonshine etc. Puka shell necklaces, etc.

Far fetched? Oh hell yeah. Doable? Absolutely. I'm considering a career change anyway, thinking of going EMT. I've contracted for years overseas doing force protection for Uncle Scumbag, came home and now I'm doing Aerospace, I think it's time I learned something actually useful to myself. If the conditions are right, I'd sell my house and vehicles and possessions for a chance at true freedom, or as close as I can get. Buy a bluewater boat, set up a nice little kitty and head out to see what happens. Worse thing that could happen is I get killed.
>>
>>29380545

I have a shit ton of D&H mags because I do what Cordan does >>29380853. They're good mags for the price. I also managed to nab around 20 Brownell mags from my LGS for $5 a piece a few weeks ago. Those are also pretty nice.

Still prefer Lancers though. It just never hurts to have a lot of magazines.
>>
>>29380912

I had a FTF first load up with my only Lancer mag. Haven't used it since. Fuck that magazine.

How do you like your battery ACOG?
>>
>>29380925
I like it well enough. It's just like a TA31, but it uses a battery instead of fiber optic/tritium combo. It's almost like a TA31 and an Aimpoint M4 had a baby.

What I don't like about it is that it weighs something like 10oz more than a TA31. Wouldn't put it on a lightweight build.
>>
>>29380946

Interesting. And the eye relief is very ACOG I assume? Because that's the biggest thing pushing me towards an ELCAN right now is they have another inch of eye relief.
>>
>>29380965
Exactly the same eye relief and FOV.

>ELCAN
Oh, if you can afford it, I'd go Elcan for sure. I got the TA02 on sale for around $875, so for me it was a no-brainer.

I see.

Looking around the ELCAN OS4x can be had for $1250, which isn't bad considering it has built in ARMS lever mounts, which they have upgraded to be better than past iterations. People have told me that because of how the mount fits the ELCAN that I wind up with the same eye relief, but after looking at it I have decided that I could just move my BUIS to in front of the optic and leave it folded down. Will be just fine I imagine.

Chrome is strong and tough coat. Stronger than crytpic proprietary low friction coat evident by their decision to have internal chromelined than cryptic due to supposedly concern that cryptic would wear off laughable quick and customer potentially discovering this and expose it.
