Lets point out the /k/ related inaccuracies within this film, I'll start.

>flamethrowers don't explode in a huge fireball when the canister gets shot

Maybe the dumb shit amerifats should have tested their floatation rigs first or asked to use the brits tanks huh?

But no, better that thousands of people die than ask someone else for help.
Apparently this sort of rampant murderous incompetence was quite common back then.

Things I learned from SPR:

>Driving open-topped Marder tank destroyers through a town with known hostile infantry has obvious tactical benefits.

>German Waffen-SS troops thought that tracer bullets tasted like candy, and lunged into American fire only to realize the shocking deception.

>When your Tiger tank has a disabled track, you unlock the toilet-lid sheet metal hatch and greet your former enemies

>The average age of the American GI invading France was late 30s and early 40s

>American Mustangs can destroy Tiger tanks by flying over them.
>>
>driving opened top Marder III tank hunters down a street
Didn't they learn NOT to do that shit from Ivan?
>>
>>29327029
The average age of a combat soldier in WWII was 26. Given that tons of guys signed up at 17 or 18, it's not entirely unrealistic for there to be a bunch of 30-40 year olds.
>>
>>29327029
didn't they throw a grenade into the hatch then open it up? (they being the american paratroopers, not the tank commander)
also, the average age of GIs in WW2 was 26
>>
the movie makes it look like that they capture omaha too fast
it was only after 12 brutal hours and some brave seamen in destroyers providing coastal bombardment that the americans secured their beachhead
>>
>>29327021
I think the movie actually makes it easier. In real life, the landing took all day. In the movie, they're in the trench line within 10 minutes.

The first wave on Omaha Beach suffered ~90% casualties.
>>
>>29327102
the tanker commander opens it and pokes his head out. The paras then shoot him and prop the hatch open with their guns while they drop grenades in.

iirc, the point of that scene was to show that Cpt. Miller WASN'T thinking clearly, and made a rash decision that got one of his men killed. If you rewatch the movie, hints get dropped throughout showing Miller was slipping (hand tremors, for example.)

Besides, officers make shit decisions all the time, and Miller's wasn't all too bad really. He was actually pulling a textbook tactic used in the war to assault an MG: three prongs charge the MG, which can only fire on one prong at a time, so two prongs will always be advancing, with the BAR gunner laying suppressing fire on the nest. Once in range, you lob grenades to knock out the nest. Now, IRL, this process could take a couple hours realistically; it's less a made dash and more a very slow advance from cover to cover when openings present themselves (barrel changes, reloading, etc.), but obviously it was abridged for the movie's sake.

Generation War is okay if you watch it simply as an extended length movie. It's been compared to Band of Brothers but it's nowhere near it in terms of it in acting, plot, or historical accuracy. Production values are reasonably high.
The confluence of plot factors that repeatedly bring the cast together are are just hilariously contrived. And less importantly it gets a lot of flak for not painting Nazis rank and file as comically evil villains (despite the presence of true believer SS/Gestapo officers and penal battalions who give no fucks) but rather people in love with the lie which ironically is probably closer to the fact. It does however minimize most of the examples of atrocities it does choose to show. IIRC it was originally major network programming so that's not shocking.
It's worth a watch but it's not great or anything. Stalingrad (1993) was much better in the same vein despite the infallible lieutenant.

>>29329062
Both the Gestapo officer who moves to postwar bureaucracy (banal as you can get) and the SS major were certainly banal as opposed to being cackling maniacs, which I think was a large part of the criticism, like I said. The penal battalion commandant was certainly much more stereotypically Hollywood evil. For the most part, the rest of the cast other than the main protagonist(s) were useful idiots or cannon fodder. What felt like the main protagonist however was so angsty you cannot like him even if he is frequently the most reasonable, alternating with his brother who gets butthurt angsty in the end. Their juxtaposition was probably the most interesting thing in the miniseries and even that felt contrived. The treatment of the Jew by the partisans was mildly interesting and hints to the uninformed just how many forces were at work there in world war II. It's okay if heavy handed.
>>

I did a big ol NATO joint training ex with the Canadians and the Brits a while back. The Scott's Guard were on their shit. All of them extremely experienced with like 4 deployments each under their belt.

The canadians on the other hand were retarded and just kind of bumbled through everything. Were very unprofessional. Drunkenly pissed in our water buffalo. Tried to steal shit start fights and had a general air of arrogance to them. I saw the fattest infantryman I've ever seen. The porker sat at like 3 hundo. Granted they were french canadians. It comes down to judgement, and this TC made a bad call.

The Higgins boat, the landing craft used in the film, was used for several reasons. First, it's forward opening door was necessary for beaches that didn't have gradually sloping beaches. Normandy beaches had very steep drop offs, so putting your ramp in the rear or side could mean you were exiting into water several feet deeper than that at the front. Secondly, marines had amphibious landing craft with rear-facing doors, but the could carry only a fraction the amount of troops a Higgins boat could. Also, the boats used in the movie were not the ones the rangers really used on D-Day; they used the British up-armored version with its own MG and partial head cover. But the studio couldn't get any of these boast for filming, so they were forced to use regular Higgins boats.

Pic is of real craft used by the rangers on D-Day.

This scene was based on the real life example of the Sullivan brothers, all five of which were killed on the same ship earlier in the War. The Chief of Staff wrote a personal letter to the mother of the Sullivans, and due to that event the Military initiated a rule that the sole surviving heir of a family was exempt from the draft or service, hence why they were fetching out Ryan.

just after Nijmegen the Grenadier Guards Tanks came under fire from a lone AT gun. fearing heavier resistance down the road they pulled back and hunkered down for the night following orders from 30th corps to do so. there was only a single AT gun and scattered infantry between them and Arnhem. The next day the remnants of the British and Polish airborne brigade surrendered. They were just a couple of hours drive to Arnhem but high 30th corps command and the Commander of the Grenadier Guards failed to take the initiative resulting in the total loss of the Airborne Brigade.

>A few move safely through the bullet swarm to the beach, then find that they cannot hold there. They return to the water to use it for body cover. Faces turned upward, so that their nostrils are out of water, they creep toward the land at the same rate as the tide. That is how most of the survivors make it.

The only reason why they had to go to the killing zone of Omaha beach is because the main assault points were to the left and right of it, and it would've left a hole open. They were literally cannon fodder.

They're fucking brutal. See: Italy, and their post-war peacekeeping in Germany.

Don't forget the real 'Ryan'...

>Be Sgt Niland, Screaming Eagles
>Jump into France
>Fuck up Jerry
>Fuck broads
>Army takes over, get leave
>Decide to visit Army bro at Utah Beach
>Find out he was killed in the landing
>Shit
>Get back with paratroops, go visit sister regiment to say hi to All American parachute bro
>Find out he's dead too
>Well fuck
>Padre comes round, gives condolences
>Ask him how Bob died
>He does know anything about that
>He's talking about Ed being MIA over in the Pacific
>Up one ticket back home, down three brothers

Good news was Edward survived, bailed out from his bomber then made a PoW.

You serious mate?

We Kiwis got endless praise and medals for our perfect soldiers. We made sure Germany never used paratroopers again. We also haka'd the shit out of Africa and stormed up through italy.

We also made the cheapest tank in the war.

Take us off the list now.

Thank you honorary Kiwi. If only we had 10,000 more of the Bob Semple Tanks. We could have stormed Normandy with only hundreds of losses.

This. There weren't any bunkers at Omaha beach (except one which was used by artillery observers). Gunners like Heinrich Severloh or Franz Gockel fought from simple dugouts/foxholes.

I think most shitposters ITT are Aussies pretending to be either American or British/Euro
>>
worst thing about the movie like all ww2 movies is that the opposing force (germans) just run out into an active battlefield while the good guys are actually using tactical maneuver

always kills the scene for me

Only three people have ever won the VC twice.
Only one of those in the second world war.
He was from one of the countries you listed.

pic one and only one.
That front was so irrelevant to the whole war it doesn't even need serious mentioning. Germans sent about four divisions down there. On the eastern front alone were more than 100 divisions.
Stop making shit up

They contribute a hell of a lot more than the insufferable shitposting Auscucks. Granted there are still some Auscucks that still contribute, but nowhere near the level of the euro/britcucks.

Russia literally demanded that we open a second front. The beach heads the allied forces took during Overlord weren't well-known or heavily defended, they were sparsely defended, under supplied and crewed by old and/inexperienced youngins. The main army was off dancing around Russia, and Hitler even pulled back the main force from the Atlantic wall to move into central europe and to reinforce russia due to overwhelming losses the germans were suffering. We didn't use Italy because we thought it would be too difficult to push straight through the center line, not to mention the PR the americans and british/canadians/everyone would get by liberating Paris.
>>
>>29326162
Then explain during the landing that soilders said this.

Surely if this isn't true then the soilders that died after being shot from those bunkers are just faking it right? i mean he flys may of already set in but he's still alive..

Stalingrad and Midway were the two most important battles of the war.

Obviously the Japs had no chance at beating the American Navy. The US built more ships and better ships. But I would have loved to see the Japs vs Brits in some big fleet battles.

Brits adapted very poorly to pacific warfare.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_Prince_of_Wales_and_Repulse

I bet these fuckers felt on top of the world after sinking Bismarck, only to get air raped by some slant eyed fucks.

It's not fair to compare the Price of Whales to the Iowa, but it's hilarious how less prepared for ww2 it was than the North Carolina which was also completed in 1941. Every time the Japs tried to air rape Showboat, they lost 15+ planes.

it would've been longer and more arduous, but nazi germany simply wasn't structured in a way that was viable in the long term. it was doomed to fail from the minute it fired the first shot.
