You have to consider the costs in both cases.

If you get your local dealer to order the gun online for you and then sell it to you, you will have to pay for the local store markup and sales tax (if your state has sales tax).

If you buy it online yourself (from an out of state dealer) and transfer it to a local dealer for pickup, you pay the online dealer, shipping, and your local transfer fee. If the transfer fee and shipping come out to less than the markup if your local dealer bought it for you (plus sales tax), then buy online.

The local store will add more of a markup than their transfer fee and shipping costs in 90% of cases, unless your dealer charges outrageous amounts of transfers. Good dealers will charge $15 to 35 for transfers, in most cases.
