this is my imbel FAL kit i built on a Coonan receiver. it works great i still need to refinish it and polish the hand guards. oh also my Argentine browning hi power. setting the head space on the FAL is a bitch by the way. I also broke my bench vise putting the barrel on the receiver because it took like 240 pounds of torq to get it timed correctly.

What are your thoughts on 16in .308 battle rifles?
>>
>>29273139
if your gunna use a 16 inch barrel why not just use a smaller round like a 7.62x39?
i really think minimum barrel length for a 308 battle rifle should be like 20" so you can burn all the powder and get all that velocity.
>>
>>29273139
It's not ideal but will work. I prefer 18 inches.
>>
>>29273172

Really you only gain +-50fps between 18-20in. To me that's not worth it. But the 350-400fps you get between 16-18 is.

I'm offended the SR25/AR10 / L129A1/M110 isn't in that pic.

It is serviced, deployed and fits the definition.

If there is a pic, can the /brg/, for once, have one in it.

It's not like its the "Lambo" of the gun world or anything...guess its more like the "Ron Paul 2012" gun.

As far as I know it is the only 308 with a FA. DPMS has soft bolt closure devices for hunting purposes but they aren't true FAs per my reading.

FAL has been dead for many decades now and G3 is still in service around the world. Even when taking out the most obvious endless African and South American countries + Iran and Saudis even western countries still have stockpiles of them and huge amounts in active use like Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, of course Germany, etc.

FALs on the other hand are just ded.

I think I might go with the STG58 kit, (which actually is a G1 kit, my mistake earlier) even though it is more expensive for the sole reason that the barrel assembly is already disassembled, and the barrel has the gas block installed and aligned. Since the only gunsmithing experience I have is assembling my M16A1 clone from a stripped upper and lower, I don't want to dive in too deep and wind up with $1000 in gun parts that will never be one.

Pretty much this. If you are getting a cold war battle rifle it's kinda the deal to get your rocks off from aesthetically clean and stock looking guns.

Tacticool isn't a thing when your lugging around a full size full nato round rifle, you've throw that option out of the windows when got one.

Also you the the buffer tube/silenced SBR anon(s) you are gonna get bored of those in a week, traditional rifle looks objectively good for decades.

I doubt there's some specific measurement, but IMO, it should launch a ~150gr bullet at least into the upper 2000's fps range. Or have equivilent power with a heavier bullet, so you might be launching a closer to 200gr bullet at more like 2400-2500 or so fps.

Well, it should have the ability to launch 150grain ~30cal bullet at 2700 or 2800fps at least. Or be able to create around that equivalent amount of energy in a heavier bullet.
There's no real scaling, I just consider that to be the amount amount of energy it should have.
But a battle rifle round depends more on the fact that it's shot through a battle rifle. I don't consider .300 winchester fuddenheimer ultra magnum to be a battle rifle round just because it meets power requirements.

this but detachable magazine isnt a requirement even though personally i dont count the garand as a battle rifle
>>
>>29282361
How can you not count a garand?
>>
>>29282361
Select fire negates the garand. It's hard to say since there's no set definition. I generally think of them like assault rifles except with a full size round. The standard issue helps differentiate them from DMRs or other non standard things.
>>
>>29282435
By that definition you can't count anything on here because nonew of them are select fire, only semi.

The designation of battle rifle is usually given to post-World War II select fire infantry rifles such as the FN FAL, the M14 and the H&K G3.[1] This term also describes older military full-powered semi-automatic rifles such as the M1 Garand, the MAS-49 and the FN-49.

.338 has a much flatter trajectory and less recoil while propelling a 200gr bullet at M80 ball velocities from the same length barrel.

Thanks to some fucking wizardry .338Fed with 200gr bullets kicks indistinguishably from .308win with 175SMK's while being higher velocity. On the flip side .358 is pretty punishing, worse than .300wm.

I'd like to own a semi rifle in all the .338 family

Ive never seen that caliber at a store, I already own fairly "wildcat" enough calibers, 338 is in the middle, in multiple ways, except short range hammer damage. I don't take buying a system to shoot a hard to find/custom order ammo lightly.

If I did, it would be

Nah. Just degrease the shit out of it first. Then do it again for good measure. Get some tape and an exacto knife, seal off what you dont want painted. Either go for a cammo pattern, or do the recievers in one color, and the small parts (trigger, takedown lever, etc) in a lighter color. If you go for a cammo pattern, practice it first. Cut a piece of cardboard out in something resembling a rifle.

There are plenty of walkthrough guides and videos out there.

Anybody got experience with the FNAR? It looks pretty, like a modernized BAR (saw some images in that big BAR thread yesterday). How does it perform relative to the Big 3 (M1A, FAL, and G3)?
>>
>>29295276
BAR as in the Browning hunting rifle yes.
As in two Nazis walk into a BAR, no.

It's accurate. Mags are expensive. You can swap out furniture if you don't like pistol grips.
>>
>>29295380
Cosmetically the nuBAR/FNAR are close enough to the old BAR to elicit a certain amount of fondness from me. I know I want an autoloading raffle in .308, and I know I want it to have optics, and I know I want it to have capacity for at minimum 10 rounds.

As other anon said, its a voyager.

But you can see the upper/lower mating is matching. The type III recievers used in imbels do not have the lightening cut like Type I/II do. The lowers match this. That rear sight, only used on voyagers.

Integrateable you mean. Bipod doesn't come with any single model that I'm aware of and runs a few hundred bucks with a not uncommon price of 3 to 400 regularly.
>>
>>29300358
It doesn't have a carry handle.
>>
>>29300367
Yeah originals are 200-400 bucks and it's a perfect slip on to the handguard.

There are reproductions for under 100 bucks but they have been disappointments I hear. How hard is it to make a good repro out of the bipod, well made affordable ones would sell like hotcakes as every wide handguard owner would buy one for shits and giggles.
>>
>>29300377
That's what im saying. A voyager is about the only fal you see nowadays with no carry handle. So seeing that in a fal in the future anon can correctly guess it's a voyager.

>>29301016
But isn't that basically the same price as the fulton models? I knew fulton was over 2k last I looked. Can anyone with long term experience actually make a definitive statement about springfield? I know they have a good warranty but I don't want to have to be sending the rifle off constantly every time I take it to the range (that's am exaggeration I know). What to expect if I buy a springfield version?
>>
>>29301490
So as far as the receiver goes no worries since they are the same? What about the other parts that people claim need to be usgi stuff? Does it really make a difference if I'm shooting less than 3000 rounds a year through it?
>>
>>29301796
Few people here have m1as.
Your going to find second hand information here.

Your going to find a lot of cast parts. Mind you modern cast parts are not as bad as they used to be. Finding GI parts is harder and more expensive than most other battle rifles. If you really want one, be sure to put it through its paces if your a "muh SHTF" types.
>>
>>29301796
>>29301820
>>29301837
M1A's with small part breakages and issues mostly come from new factory built rifles.

The simple fact is, new M1A's are not good to go because of Springfield Armory's reckless outsourcing of their small parts to Taiwan. The receivers are even cast in Canada of all places.

Springfield Armory Inc ran out of full USGI M14 parts kits to assemble M1A's with around 2003 and most of their leftover GI small parts in were put in rifles until 2005.

This is why I recommend buying a used, older M1A. You can get the rifle at a discount most of the time since it is used while having the nice bonus of M14 contract GI parts installed.

If anyone in this thread has an M1A manufactured after the dates that I mentioned (Serial numbers 150000+) I would definitely recommend buying an extra extractor since it is the small outsourced part that fails the most due to bad heat treat. Thankfully you can buy milspec extractors online for pretty cheap.

What serials should I look for when purchasing a used one? Or dates of manufacturing? From your post a springfield from before 2003 would be ok? Is there an easy way to identify a rifle that has better parts? Aside from date and hoping someone didn't swap them to sell them, if that's even a thing

I have no intention of using it as a shtf rifle. It seems it would be overly heavy and prone to failure for that type of thing. It would mainly be a range queen
