Buy a gun you like, and will shoot a lot. Practice is more important than the gun when you're starting out.

Don't cheap out though. Buy once, cry once is extremely relevant to the firearms market.

For someone who is inexperienced in shooting it has high recoil, they'll learn to flinch instead of dealing with it, you have to deal with the fact that it's milsurp (bore could be shot out and cosmoline,) and so forth. I enjoy my milsurp, but to learn technique on there are far better choices available. /k/ likes mosins because they were dirt cheap, and they don't even really have that anymore.
