Yeah, actually. A beater AK is perfect, never have to clean or really muck with.

Having said that, if you want a weapon to 'get to know' go AR. Learn about it, building a 100% unique one should be the goal...getting to know its workings.

Finnish Mosin, or a K98 is you want a bolt action. WASR if you want a fun AK to plink with, and an AR is you have a fetish for legos

Depends on what you want out of a first gun.
My opinion is that available milsurp RIFLES that are going to be found in shops are shit at everything except hunting up to the $700 mark. The exception being the sks.

At seven hundred good surplus rifles become options, almost all from the one country that fought both the japs and Nazis in WW2.

So yeah for milsurp unless you want to spend more for less get an SKS.
