Glock like other Anon said is good, ask about a CZ75 or Beretta M9/92fs, Jerichos or now the baby eagle are well liked and great for the price. Don't must knowledgeable about them but heard great things about Sigs, HK's pistols.

If you want something on top of a pistol get a shotgun(Mossberg, marvick or Remigton 870 are hard too beat) and I would recommend a revolver(S&W are hard too beat and look for used, .357 would be best, can shoot .38 speical and +p from them no problem)

Or just get a pistol and Aton of ammo, and accessories with it. Or two 400-500 pistols and ammo.

Basically if you're buying a pistol, there are really 3 main things you wanna keep in mind.

size, caliber, striker vs. hammer

Size basically refers to the capacity of the weapon using standard size magazines. You can get a "big" one that holds more, but is difficult or near impossible to carry concealed if that's something you're considering, while smaller pistols are obviously easier to conceal but carry less ammo.

Once you've picked a size, you probably want to think about caliber, the general trade-off is speed vs. size of bullet when it comes to this. You can go crazy reading shit-flinging on forums about which is better, but you should probably fire pistols in a variety of calibers to see what you like.

Finally you can consider whether you prefer a striker fired or hammer fired pistol, this refers to different mechanisms that these weapons have for firing. The practical impact is on trigger pull, as well as how you want your firearm to be configured if you're using it for defense.

At the end of the day you should reflect on what you want to use this first weapon for, which will hopefully narrow you down in terms of size and maybe caliber, then you can go to your local gun store and test fire some various platforms until you find one that you like.

For one grand you can probably get a used revolver and handgun. Maybe a hair bit more especially if you get ammo.

For revolvers, S&W model 10/64, 36/37 and 15 and 49 are great for 38 speical.
Model 13/65, 19/66, 27/28 and 586/686(some stainless 686 have 7 chambers instead of 6) are great for .357 magnums.(6's in front means stainless make of the other gun)

Charter arm Bulldogs are great low cost revolvers, most your gonna find are in 44 special(harder too find but they have .357 ones) if you get one of those, get the classic or blued with wood grips ones.

Will cost more but Colts are great, detective specials, police positives and agents are great for .38. Lawman or Troopers are pretty great and won't cost a few grand like a Pynthon would.

Ruger's are great and built like tanks, older security six's and GP 100 or SP 101 are amazing and will outlive you. Also RedHawks while costing more are great and huge.

Great paring of one pistol and revolver for a grand or so would be, used or Surplus Italian Beretta 92, Israel Jericho surplus, surplus Hi power or FEG with a used Smith and Wesson of some kind or Ruger would go together well.

Look online at gunbroker, armslist, Gunsamerica, aim surplus, Ohiosourther guns, buds, grabagun or classic firearms.

It's not something I would want too put 1,000's apon 1,000's of rounds through but yes. They where one of the more common and poplar truck/glovebox guns. Also they became famous because of the Son of Sam killer, or the .44 special killer.

One problem with those guns is they where made in a lot of different factories and cities and people say ones made here are better then ones here, so ones made in certain places(think it begin with a B or H) are gonna cost you 50 or so bucks more.

They can go for a bit less then 300 or one of the new ones for 350-386 at places.

Also about gun cost in general, some places let you put things on layaway, without interest but have too pay 20% up front, just a thought.
