Hey /k/ after years of lurking I finally have the spare cash to buy my first gun. I want to get a rifle and am leaning twards the sks.

I plan to
>plink things
>take it on hikes on federal land
>use it to hunt
>self/home defense
And maybe go to the range but I've never been into that so much

My one question is: Is the Sks the rifle for me? I have heard rumors of its accuracy being iffy and would like some more info
>>
Depending on the variant, you could either get an excellent piece or a lemon.

1. The soviet ones aren't super common anymore, and the price isn't really worth it for what you get.

2. Yugo Zastavas are reasonably priced, and the lack of a chrome-lined barrel makes for a more accurate rifle. However, they're about a pound heavier than most SKSs.

3. Chinese copies are iffy-to-okay if you can find them for cheap, which is out of the question in the US.

4. East German ones are pretty rare, but they're excellent rifles. I've personally only held one once, and I could tell that a lot of work went into it. They're mad-pricy though.

There are other variants out there, but I'm not familiar with them. There are plenty of forums dedicated to old Slav rifles like the SKS though, so I'm sure you can find the information you need.

What makes you say you can't find type 56's cheap?
>>
>>29168818

Why an SKS exactly?
>>
>>29168903
It's not really a matter of price I guess, I've just never seen any in decent condition for less than $450, so I just kind of stopped even looking at them whenever I see them.

Huh. I just picked up a nice one for $307 shipped yesterday.
>>
>>29168953
Nice find. I only shop for guns locally so that I can actually hold what I'm getting my hands on, so that kind of limits what I end up with as far as price and quality.
>>
>>29168928
it sounds like he wants one.
he talked about it rather extensively in the OP.
>>
>>29168975
Oh I see. If you change your mind check out j&g sales.
>>
>>29168818
I hope you don't plan to deer hunt with it OP.
>>
>>29168990
I want a semi-auto carbine mostly, just looking into the sks because its not that expensive compared to an AR

>>29169040
Why? Was considering boar hunting since there's no restrictions
>>
>>29168818
>>29169040
You can drop a deer with 7.62x39 easy. Just don't shoot farther than 100 maybe 150 yards max. 3030 has 1300 joules of energy at 100 yards and 7.62x39 has 1100
>>
>>29168818
If you are in the US and in a free state just save the up the extra $200 and buy a WASR.

Great rifle for boat hunting. But you don't need a semi-auto in 7.62x39 for deer hunting. You'll take poor shots because you get a quick follow up and it'll blow the poor thing near in half!

How many people should I have with me during a boat hunt? I heard those things are pretty vicious.
>>
I bought a russian SKS a few monts ago. It was on sale, only paid $200 for it.
Took it out to the range and it shoots about 12 feet to the right at a 100 yards. It's a cool rifle and I will probably buy another one in the future and bubba this one up just to piss all the /k/ommandos off. But now that I have owned one and have read up on them a bit more I would be more careful when picking which rifle to get out of the stack.

Honestly if you want a solid first plinking/small game rifle get a ruger 10/22. It's cheap to shoot, there are tons of accessories and mods for it out there. Henry .22LR lever action is a ton of fun too since you can put almost any kind of .22 in it.

If you need something bigger on a budget Savage has some good options.
>>
you can get a new ar-15 for p cheap nowadays id recommend it just because of its huge after market and relatively cheap ammo. U can customize it to suit you.
>>
>>29171343
Have you adjusted the sights yet?
>>
>>29171371
Yeah, this. You need to realize that these aren't commercial firearms factory bore sighted out of the box. Get one of those cheap sight adjustment tools and get it shooting straight.

you should be fine on your own, but make sure to bring a backup piece if you go boat hunting. I know a lot of /k/omrades who have lost their guns in tragic boating accidents
>>
>>29171371
I have.
There are more problems with that SKS than just the sights. What pissed me off the most is the fact that I found a crack in the stock, I should have noticed it when I was buying the rifle.
That's why I don't mind putting it in a synthetic stock in the future.
>>
>>29169068
Killed deer easily at 130+ with a 30-30. Shot placement and ammunition.
>>
>>29169054
Why not get a Saiga?
They're pretty nice unconverted and still kind of cheap.
>>
>>29171365
This needs to die.

>You can get a piece of shit AR 15 for really cheap these days.

Ftfy.
>>
>>29171540
Except not. PSA BCGs are Toolcraft (suppliers for Colt) and can be had for cheap, as well as FN CHF CL barrels. Nitride/melonite barrels are also great, and even the SS 416 barrels aren't that bad.
>>
>>29171815
FN CHF barrels are 200$. The kit is like 600. Not including the lower and whatever other dongle and mags you want to throw in. That's not cheap. There are people on here right now, you may or may not be one of them, that will say you can buy an AR for <400 dollars. Thats a shit AR, sorry. You're parts, especially barrel, won't be up to snuff for the long haul. Which is why you then see all the 350$ AR people replacing parts a year later. I wouldn't be happy with any of the ARs I see that can be built under $600.

For the purpose of OP, I'd rather buy an SKS or WASR first, which I know has a banging barrel and that will hold up over time rather than a sub 400 dollar AR that I'll then sink 400 more dollars into later to make it quality.
>>
>>29172239
*your parts*
>>
>>29172239
Got my chf kit for $580, and a lower for $50. The bcg is nickle boron. It's top of the line.

Stay mad, slavboo.
>>
My first rifle was an type 56 SKS I bought for $350. I like it but I like my WASR-10/63 better.

I picked this one up for $350 on my 18th birthday in August. Great rifle but I do like my WASR-10/63 better because more firepower and about the same accuracy.
