Out of curiosity, would a plasma gun actually be a feasible thing in real life?

These things show up all the time in the sci-fi genre, generally as some powerful weapons, but there doesn't seem to be much merit to the idea. Now I ain't a physicist or whatever, but basically shooting ball lightning at people sounds like it would be really shitty in small arms technology.

From the wiki

>The weapon was able to produce doughnut shaped rings of plasma and balls of lightning that exploded with devastating effects when hitting its target.

Shiiiiieeeeeettttttt
>>
>>28863114
Our biggest problem with these, and energy weapons in general, is power supply. We just don't have the batteries (capacitors, I know) to run one in any sensibly portable package.

The second biggest problem with a plasma weapon has always been containment. The thermal bloom associated with the dissipation of a high-energy plasma toroid is a little bit insane. Something like this fired into a building (especially sandpeople mud huts) would turn it into an easy bake oven.

We ever figure these out, though, and they'll probably be more like an incendiary grenade launcher and area of effect weapon than a true plasma rifle. Hell of a friendly fire hazard too. Wouldn't want to be within twenty meters of something like that firing.
>>
>>28863651
>tfw shitty batteries are pretty much the only thing keep use from having small arms gauss rifles
I want my fucking magnet projectile going super fast, someone figure that shit out already!
>>
>>28863690
Get a long metal pipe and get thick copper wire spiraling around it and connect a few semi truck batteries and there you go you got yourself a magnetic rifle.
>>
>>28863690
Gauss saturation would keep projectiles too slow
>>
>>28863114
The physics check out and in theory it would be pretty effective, only two things limit it however (based on limited research I have done on this)

Battery capacity is not really anywhere near the point where this is feasible

I understand plasma could be ejected electromagnetically in a straight "beam" but I would imagine the range would be limited and the plasma "beam" would dissipate quickly.
>>
really depends what you mean by "plasma gun"

Plasma Guns are nothing more than a scifi meme. In real life, Plasma would be like having a gas rifle. Plasma dissipates quickly and it is easy to disrupt with magnetic fields. If you have a electromagnetic field capable of containing a plasma shot over long distances, why not just use the electromagnetic field as a weapon?
>>
>>28865960

>>28863998
all these Sci-fi concepts are currently real and practical. We are just waiting for a suitable portable power source (batteries) to actually develop them.
>>
>>28863690
Actually made a gauss rifle in school. It's a little bit harder than that but not by much. If you got a bigass bank of capacitors you could make something that could probably seriously wound someone, make that a multistage gauss rifle with multiple capacitor banks and shits getting lethal. A fallout style gauss rifle isnt too far off.
>>

Should add that it was duct taped to ply wood, ran off of an outlet, and shot little cut up screws about 12 feet, but hey, the potential's there.
>>
>>28866340

Plasma would suffer from poor performance at range. It's just hot ionized gas, which is not exactly dense, and therefore will diffuse quickly when fired in atmosphere. It's completely impractical for military purposes.

What exactly is a plasma gun? Are we just talking about superheated gasses/fourth state of matter focused into a coherent weapon? If so, I think it might work well as a shaped charge, as we already use plasma torches in welding. Perhaps something like Super Thermite that can eat through tanks (Shoot a solid shot at something, internal reaction causes plasma which melts through anything it touches.).

Doesn't negate armour saves and it's ONLY on a 1 in 7th. Back in 4th, rapid fire and heavy plasma guns overheated on a 1+1 for each subsequent shot. I refused to play plasmarines for a long time because of the trauma, then they changed the rules.
>>
>>28867558
I hear that's been changed. Vehicles suffer damage from plasma, though it's usually not fatal. Also, it's not like the old days where a gets hot wound kills the plasma operator and someone else picks up his weapon, now he dies and everyone else is too afraid to touch it (So no more allocating wounds to lasrifle guardsmen.).
>>
>>28863651
So today, kids, we are going to show you how to flash boil some kebab meat. I'm here with my trusty ZX734 Plasma launcher manufactured by Kel-Tek(from design ideas sent in by an anonymous source) and over there is our target, an mud hut filed with "volunteers." The mud hut is super important, it locks in the heat. Really seals in the juices. Let's get cooking.

(Fire gun and watch results then cut back to dude with gun)

Wow now that was awesome. Let's go look at our meat.

(Cut to inside of hut where you see a pile of charred corpses)

You see now we cooked them to well done. If you want medium or rare you need to use a different gun. Probably one that shoots bullets. But if you are a fan of well done or just destroying your food before eating it/tea bagging it then then ZX734 is the weapon for you.
>>
>>28863542
railguns do produce plasma. typically an aluminum sheet is vaporized into plasma, the plasma is "pushed" out of the barrel using the polarization of the rails, and the projectile rides the plasma "wave" out of the barrel.

Serious about this guys. A HERF canon, crossed with a vortex canon filled with gas instead of air.

Fire a doughnut of high voltage 50,000 degree fire with the force to knock down small structures.

You don't need railgun like magnetic fields to direct plasma if its a concussion wave of gas being energized in mid air.

Plasma weapons are not viable because there is no known method to maintain cohesion of the projectile. It's the weapon equivalent of blowing cigar smoke in your opponent's face. Also, they are basically just mass accelerators, and offer no advantages over more traditional mass acceleration weapons, like bullets.
>>
>>28863567
If this is true, then that means the most accurate depiction of plasma weapons comes from old movies where the space guns would shoot out circles of different color lights.
>>
>>28871806

>no advantages

I don't know about that. Since it would be causing extreme thermal damage, rather than killing by poking holes in things, it would make traditional body armor completely worthless. And it would cause some truly horrific injuries. It would be like putting a potato in the microwave without poking holes in it first, only a person.

If powerful enough, it could even melt through the armor of vehicles.
