I do it now as an intel analyst, we call it VISRECCE. It's not as bad as you think, there's lots of little tricks that can help you remember planes.

A guy I know is restoring a Lockheed Constellation, and he bought all of Canada's Martin Mars electric curtiss propeller spares.

I just ran into a catalina last weekend.
It's a project in a hangar at Ft. Pierce, FL. All the parts are there plus spares. Just needs a restoration.
There were also two HU-16s parked outside.

Used to be not one, but two Catalinas at one museum near me (MN). Blue and Red. Then the dumbasses didn't properly secure one in a storm, it flipped, and now they have one Catalina and one repair/restoration project.

The same thing also happened in South Texas. Catalina destroyed by a storm. Those fucking retards.

The C-47 I work on got caught up in a tornado a number of years ago. There were 3 convairs and 2 c-47s spun around together.
A convair wing had gone through the fuselage. The empennage section was totally destroyed. And one prop was all bent up. We thought the plane was totaled. But, after a year or so. We got the plane all fixed up. And the repairs aren't noticeable at all.

I still have four sets of those cards.

I have a couple of the aircraft card sets too.

In regards to the vehicle ID cards, we had to carry a set everywhere we went. Whenever there was down time we were expected to pull out the cards and test each other. Those are the correct year for me too, I enlisted in 1986. I served on M113, M901 ITV, M3 CFV, and M551 Sheridan.

Some sets were actually marked as playing cards. I think the aircraft set was marked as cards. I'll have to dig them out and look, they've been packed away a couple of decades.

Kermit Weeks has one pretty intact sitting on the ramp at his museum as well. They're around.

Problem is that they're fuckhuge, thirsty, and painfully slow. Couple that with not one but two radials that can only be worked on by a dying breed of mechanic and you've got a perfect recipe for an airframe well on it's way out.

Oh well, at least they'll never be uncool.
