Worst case it recoils back into your neck. More probable you shoot something you shouldnt have or it goes through a target into someone upstairs. Would not recommend. Backstop though, maybe water jugs/ phone books. Dont miss

Op I really understand your will to "just shoot" but an unventilated "range" like your basement will definetly fuck your health. Trust me. My Lgs owner shot a lot at the range behind his store, last year they had to remove one of his testicles because cancer. Dont shoot in your basement man, its not worth the health risk.

One or two gun shots _ever_ probably wouldn't matter but it's not something I'd make a habit of. From a health perspective indoor ranges suck even when they're properly ventilated. Worst case scenario someone actually calls the cops and you don't answer the door.

1. Assuming ventilation is poor, as in most basements, the smoke will stink like you wouldn't believe, and it will linger longer than you expect.
2. If the ammo is old and/or foreign surplus, be certain there's no mercury fulminate in the primer as there's no need to be breathing that crap or adding it to your house dust. (But if you did accidentally get a whiff, assuming you're an adult, you'd be fine so don't panic.)
3. It's harder to make an effective backstop than you think. Just a few shots to a cinder block and any small caliber will have penetrated.
4. If a ricochet happens, it's likely to cause damage whatever direction it goes.
5. You won't be able to resist mentioning it to a trusted friend. He'll tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends, and so on and so on and so on. Eventually word will get out that you tested an improvised suppressor using a 2 litre soda bottle stuffed with glass wool, and some local cop will hear about it but have no evidence, so he'll just add you to the no fly list, which will sooner or later prevent you from buying guns.

I have shot in a friends basement as a kid, his father had a large round of unsplit firewood we would shoot into, we didn't really understand the seriousness of lead poisoning back then. mostly a 10/22 but also a .357 mag.

A. lead filters out of your body. the lie that it stays there forever was to keep your 8 year old dumbass self from eating paint chips
B. the only place lead is harmful in your body is soft tissues. lead filters out of soft tissues in ~2-3 weeks.
C. only a small amount of ingested lead actually enters your blood or soft tissues. and only ~40% of inhaled lead particulates end up in your blood/tissues
D. of injested lead, 90% of it is stored in your hard tissues (like bone and fingernails) and is funtionally inert and causes no health issues.
E.acute lead poisoning is a blood lead level of ~25u/dl and chronic is 75+. if it is asymptomatic, then you're fucking fine. If you do have acute lead poisoning it is very apparent and the cure is staying away from sources of lead until your lead level decreases.

you aren't making top hats, you're just potentially inhaling lead particulates from the primer compound while shooting. As long as a range has proper ventilation you will never have a problem with it.

kids absorb 75% more lead from a lead source than an adult, which is why children are those most commonly affected by acute lead poisoning.

Primers are still lead based. Every shot fired releases a bit of bio-available lead into the air to eventually settle as dust. Indoor ranges with poor air flow are especially bad.
