Those things are really shitty. I used to have a collection of 'em, probably had a dozen at one point before selling them off.

You can add a LED and make the things usable with some niggering, but it ain't purdy.

And yes, the idea for the Nydar sight came from turret sights in bombers. Just didn't work that great, unless you are out in the 100% sun as in your picture.

It's made of glass (so somewhat fragile). Unless you are in the sunlight or a bright as shit indoors area, it's going to strain your eyes.

Otherwise, they're not bad for shooting at birds. I had one mounted on a Stevens 620. Loved that thing.

They're certainly usable 50-60 years on but just keep in mind that there are cheaper and more efficient options for shotgun holographic sights.

Last time I checked Nydar prices on eBay, they can range from $10-50+ depending on what it is and what comes with it

No adjustments on these sights, so unless you had a scope mount that was adjustable, pretty useless on anything other than a point and shooty. though for a f/a thompson, that might have been quite alright.

don't know if it could stand up to repeated recoil from F/A though.

I had a LED rigged up to one of mine. It does make a difference. There are other sights that use the same principle, like this piece of shit that Weaver used to make

Actually the M203 is mounted to the barrel, the handguard just covers up the mounts. You don't have to replace the whole handguard in theory, which was done on the CAR15s with the 203.

Most mods were done by smiths in the civilian world.

Mods for military were done in country. Vietnam had a lot of "field mods" done to guns but regular Joes as well as snake eaters.

Pic related, modified XM177 with foregrip and an early 30 round magazine. Looks like his moderator is covered up too by tape to keep mud and dirt from getting into the barrel.

Foregrip wasn't duct taped on. There's a bolt and washer that runs through one of the handguard vent holes that secures it to the lower heatshield.

Sometimes they cut the A1 grip at an angle so that it would be straight when mounted.

Here's another Vietnam era weapon mod.

Shortened FAL by Aussie SASR in Vietnam. The Aussies also attached the early 40mm grenade launchers to them. This one just has the extendo (pretty sure that's not an original) magazine and short barrel with foregrip.
