This is the OP who bought a Martini-Henry a few days ago. I can't get my bayonet to lock up on this rifle and I'm not quite sure why. As you can see the bayonet has a small bit of room to move However it can't because it is already hitting the stock. I need it to move down that small space so I can rotate the collar to lock the bayonet.

I have thought about trying to file down a small amount on the bayonet so that I can get it to turn to lock into place. Although I feel really guilty about even thinking about doing it.

No

I wouldn't mess with it BUT it could be in the hundreds of years the wood contracted a bit, in which case a couple GENTLE blows with a rubber mallet might get it back to proper spec.

>contracted
Meant say expanded but it's late where I am.

I actually whacked the stock a few good times with a rubber mallet and it got me nowhere.

I would just leave it if that is the case, maybe someone on the Martini forums can help you but I would be strongly hesitant to messing with it.
