I've tried FL Studio but not Ableton. I dunno, I wrote music for years in a live band setting. I love arranging and I think I have an ear for a hook but the learning curve seems so steep every time I try to compose in a digital setting.

Any tutorials you'd recommend?

Please don't look up tutorials on composition online, or you'll end up with shitty youtube videos of DJ stoners rambling about chord progressions. If you go in thinking it's all about starting with chord progressions, you'll produce generic pop garbage. Likewise, if you think it's all about looping a four bar melody, you are no better than some meme chiptune "composer" thinking he's "retro".

If you want to be good at composition, you have to do it the hard way. Become good at actual composition, and you can do anything. Listen to music from actual composers (Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, etc.), download the sheet music or MIDI and go through it. Pay attention to the parts you like, and figure out what makes it happen. Having listened to a lot of music and knowing music theory is key in recognizing and recreating good music. Write your own music based on what you learned, then reflect. Which part did you do poorly? Are you falling in a pattern? For your next piece, retry what you did badly last time, and steer away from doing the same thing every time. Most of the time, a "style" is just repeating the one thing you can do right instead of branching out to unknown, difficult areas. You're looking to improve at all times, not to plateau at a mediocre, comfortable level. Repeat until you are of reasonable skill.

If you still feel like doing denpa at this point, go ahead. Whatever you make will show your understanding of composition and be distinguishable from mass-produced trash.

That's not the part I need help with. I've been writing music my whole life. I just have been a bit of a luddite when it comes to recording software.

I used to record at home a lot on 4-tracks and shit but mine broke and I stopped playing music besides fucking around on my guitar. Every time I've ever been in a studio there's been an engineer doing everything.

Sorry to blog but you gave me a really thoughtful reply so I figured it was worth clarification.
