Tsukhime is truly a story about optimism, valuing yourself, appreciating your life, and moving boldly into the future. Death might not be as close to our doors as it is to Shiki’s… but, then again, you never know. That is why the lessons in this story are so applicable. You are alive now, but maybe not tomorrow. So look on your past fondly, smile at yourself in the mirror now and again, and hope lovingly for the future. Shiki is someone who has about a decade or two of life left, and he messes around with two immortal beings in the main routes.

In the epilogue, Shiki fatefully meets Aoko again and they muse a little bit about old times past. Shiki notes how the past several days/weeks (the span of X route) have been crazy. And some point Aoko tells him that those days will eventually end. Shiki agrees and asks something to the effect of when. The Magus just kind of remains silent and freaking Shiki just tells her that the days were fun, though.

And this is what, for me, Tsukihime was about. Yes, there were vampires and serial killers. But it was really about finding joys in today – even when it doesn’t seem like there are any… and about having faith in a tomorrow. Basically, Tohno Shiki could die ten years from that conversation with Aoko, or he might not even wake up the next day. Although we don’t “live close to death”, the same basic concept applies. There are no promises in life. So you can go through life miserable only to be potentially snuffed out tomorrow, or you can find your own happiness and hope it extends into your future.

I don’t really consider SHIKI a villain. Honestly he, like Ciel, is one of the biggest victims of the events of Tsukihime. He was just a boy who lost his sanity due to his demon blood and Roa’s influence corrupting and possessing him and God help him did he try to hold himself back.

But of course he ends losing himself but it doesn’t stop there oh no he nearly gets killed by his own father, locked and chained up in a basement for eight years where he realized he attacked his sister and almost killed his best friend lord only knows the horror that came with that realization, and just when there was hope he would regain his sense of self and sanity Kohaku drugs and brainwashes him making him succumb to his demon blood to use him for her vengeance against Makihisa reducing him to the insane wreck he is in the farside routes even when he wins against being completely taken over by Roa by giving into his demon blood he’s too broken to go back to being SHIKI.

It's part of the charm for the character.
In Akiha's route, you feel pretty bad for him and hope that you can do something about it. But there is nothing to be done.
In the end, you are two men fighting. Both have your reasons, and neither are exactly the bad guy or in the wrong. Shiki and SHIKI are both fighting for something dear to them. It's either you, or him. Only one can walk away and have Akiha.

I discovered TM with Fate and I think Arc's goodbye in the True End is better than Saber's. Both Arc and Saber are people who don't get to enjoy the little things in life and are driven by duty. Arc is some bumbling buffoon who can get incredibly petty while Saber is some heroic stoic warrior-king. Saber's goodbye didn't impact me the way Arc's did because in retrospect I guess that I've never felt that Saber needed Shirou as much as Arc needed Shiki.

When it comes to Ciel I actually have the opposite opinion. While I don't dislike her character I think that Rin is a better "iteration". Shiki liked her more than I the reader did. Nasu should have crammed in more scenes with her, sort of like how disproportional present Rin is in all routes regardless of whether it's her own or not.

Akiha just makes me feel sad because she gets shafted in all routes that isn't her own both romantically and lore-wise.

All Nasu had to do was not make Shirou so damn dense and ignorant on the subject of the Grail War. Would have been better to have him decide to compete to know what really happened to his father and the Fuyuki fire.
