Should I get a kindle for reading Japanese?
You can read LNs on it right?

Today for the first time ever I heard Japanese in the wild. I was in Walmart and I heard "ちょっと離れる" behind me and I turned around to see a mom and her 2 kids shopping. If only my speaking skills existed, then I could have leveled up.

I haven't tried manga yet but for LNs and novels in ebook format, it's great. Don't try to read PDFs on it, they're slow and without fluid formatting, text will be unbearably small.

I don't think so, screen is too small and e-ink is slow.

The Kindle is actually really irritating to me. If you get the e-ink Kindle, then Japanese lookup works, but it is slow if you need to look up a lot of words because you have to wait for the screen to update all the time. But if you try to use the Kindle app on a phone/tablet to be faster, it doesn't work with Japanese, because it can't handle verb endings and conjugations.

Mine also gets unbearably slow sometimes and I have to reboot it. I haven't seen other people have the problem though.

Just use kindle for pc and save your money.

The interface font looks shit because I'm on linux, but the novel font is fine.
I have a kindle paperwhite, but if I want to add stuff to anki I'm in front of my pc either way, so might as well read from there.
Plus the sepia setting is really easy on your eyes.

And reading manga on my kindle is pure shit. Everything is way too small and you lose the color. You can zoom but touch controls are a hassle.

How hard is card scripting?
I want a jukugo to include kanji meanings and stroke order fonts in the answer side.

Anons, how long does generally takes to someone (I mean, an average person) to reach the level of being comfortable enough with the language to play most part of VNs in Japanese and to develop enough listening skills to watch animu with a comprehension rate good enough to understand quite well what's happening? (Around 95%, I'd say)

I know some people that are studying Japanese. There's a senpai of mine in my Japanese class that has been studying for 3 years, and I don't think she could even play a random moege with a good comprehension rate. She says she can't watch anime either.
Another example is a friend on the internet that has been studying for 8 years in total, and is now taking a Japanese course in university. He can watch some anime with no subtitles, but doesn't seem to be so easy to him as it should be in my opinion...
He can just play some simple VN too, and doesn't have a high comprehension.

What does /jp/ think of this? Are the people I know just too lazy and slow or Japanese is really THIS hard?

What are some podcasts where the speaker isn't a faggot?

I had been learning the Kangxi radicals and all was fine until halfway through, when I was on a trip, had a lot of free time and thought "hey, I could learn 80 more new ones than the 20 I ususally do".

Then everything came crashing down when all those new ones got mixed into my reviews and now they all look the same to me and I had a gap of a more than a week because it got so annoying to have to do 600 reviews because I kept getting them wrong all the time.

I hope learning the Kanji is easier. Also, fuck learning ahead. ;_;

Writing kanji is necessary if you intend on actually writing Japanese, otherwise its not really worth your time. If you learn to simply recognize a kanji, then for most of them, you will never be able to retrieve them from pure memory, and instead, you become extremely dependent on your IME.

I've been studying for three years and I can understand children's anime very well, and adult anime well enough to follow stories but not really well enough to pick up all the jokes and nuances (depending on the anime, of course). For example, I can watch pretty much all of Kiniro Mosaic without even looking at a dictionary very much, but then Symphogear is kind of hard for me. I get the story but I don't completely understand exactly what's going on in each specific situation. Mining can't be worse than core considering it has quite a few fatal mistakes and leaves out quite a lot of information that you should know for some words.

Among other things.
>using the wrong kanji for a word
>some words are fully in kana when they are usually written with kanji
>the given English meaning sometimes doesn't match the meaning used in the example sentence
>order is fucked kanji compounds are often introduced before learning it's components
>missing info like "古い=old" without mentioning it can't be used for age of a person

I mean you're still grinding very simplified, sometimes wrong J-E translations that only convey partially of what's being said. I'm 4 years in and there are still words I can't understand just from J-J dictionaries. The problem is that often they just refer to a synonym word or variation which are equally hard. For some words the explanation is much better than J-E though. It's like a lottery.

If you have to ask this question you're probably not ready for a J-J dictionary yet. There are three ideas for why J-J dictionaries are better:

1) They're extra exposure to Japanese which is good
2) They're less likely to have bogus definitions
3) They're more likely to retain connotations/nuances, because they're almost never edited by non-native speakers of Japanese

Reason 1 is bogus because dictionaries are not compelling and input has to be compelling to count.

Reason 2 is valid if you're comparing to Edict, but Kenkyuusha (a commercial J-E dictionary that's easy to pirate) is reasonably good in this regard, and has definitions with a general quality on par with any single given J-J dictionary.

Reason 3 is very valid, but if you're bad enough at Japanese to ask whether it's worth your time, to use them, the answer is no. If you only need to look up a single word because you think the J-E resources are screwing you, go ahead, find a J-J definition and force your way through it with a J-E dictionary. But as far as using the dictionary for all your lookups goes, if you don't know basic Japanese, appreciating the nuances from a dictionary will take more effort and time than trying to acquire them through exposure.

Once you're ready for a J-J dictionary you should switch to Japanese grammar terms as well.
I mostly use a J-J dictionary but J-E dictionaries are still sometimes useful when I'm having trouble translating something to English or when I just want to quickly look up how a word is read.

I'm pretty much just getting started learning and I know it'll be awhile before I can read well, but I'd like a bit of advice - I know Yotsuba is the recommended manga to start reading on, but is there a similar recommendation if I want to start with a video game instead?

I think it's a more honest way to build a dictionary, and not as impractical as it used to be if you use a digital medium.
Seeing a short list of translations can give you an idea of how flexible the word is, avoiding a false impression of a 1:1 relationship between the Japanese word and one particular English word.
If you get to a position where you have to be really precise about the nuance of the words you're using, then a dictionary won't help you anyway.

You can get a good approximate actually. Count how many verbs are there in a sentence. Also, with the amount of verbs you get the amount of clauses too. You need to count compound verbs as one verb (compound verbs usually have an entry in the dictionary unless it's with 出す, 来る, 行く).

If you use an Epwing dictionary, you get the wall of text pictured there.
If you remove the examples sentences ( "\n[・▲◧◨].+|ﾛｰﾏ.+|\〔.+?\〕|\n.+?　.+") then you get incredibly little in the way of definitions or you still end up with 30 line walls depending on the word.

If you use EDICT you get anons going >EDICT.

J-J dictionaries are no good if you can't read it.

At least with those example sentences you're adding in you can edit the .py to only put in a reasonable amount. Say 3-5.

By default that plugin selects X amount of sentences (randomly) and places them on the card in a random order, with a weighting given to those that have been {CHECKED}.

Since it doesn't hardcode them to the cards (unless you edit the plug-in) each time you review the card the sentences should be different. So having 20 sentences on there is just taking up space.
