Does anybody else feel like Sanaes role in gensokyo is severely underplayed? She is a living goddess and has real ways to bridge youkai and humans together. The Hakurei shrine essentially offers nothing to the villagers and the Hakurei god is potentially a giant time bomb waiting to go off. The Hakurei shrine should be retired, it's not like Sanae cant do Reimus job anyway.

Come to think about it, it's been almost a decade since Sanae first graced us with her presence. She's made quite the progress in terms of character development. I used to hate her on the basis that there are much better proud and arrogant characters in Gensokyo, but since UFO, she gradually became more interesting, fun, relatable and easy to root for.

I guess it's that wonderful feeling of watching your daughter grow up into a splendid adult - except Miss Sanae will never actually get older if ZUN has anything to say on the matter.

Marisa has the second strongest DPS and the strongest trance in the game. I'd say you're remembering wrong, though Marisa's stages are the worst while Sanae's are slightly better (though TD stages are pretty dull in general).

A Lunarian plot that has been already resolved by that point. By Reisen among others, no less.

I think that this only goes to show that in the games, it's more important who ZUN and Tasofro feel like bringing back at a given moment and less important who matches what kind of plot. HM was barely handwaved away with Kanako being preoccupied with the cable car construction (despite her having attended the symposium), but ULiL is just absurd.

If ULiL was a manga, Marisa would certainly go straight for her closest Outside World friend (who is also a semi-regular at Hakurei shrine if WaHH is any indication) for explanation after her little trip and battle with Sumireko. And Sanae herself sure as hell wouldn't skip on an incident revolving around urban legends from her former world. But I guess Tasofro just didn't want to reuse a slot on anyone who already got into a fighting game before and only made an exception for Reisen because she could entice fans into buying the PS4 port.

Hard as it might seem, do not judge her entire fanbase by the entitled few. Hell, I've spoken to quite a few Sakuya fans who don't mind her not being playable at all - and she's the poster girl of protagonist jelaousy, going by the popular image of her fandom.

Sanae's my favorite character and I'm quite satisfied with the roles she already had. My only wish at this moment is for her to be playable in the next phantasmagoria installment, if ZUN somehow makes one.

Though admittedly, ZUN *had* made it all too easy to consider Sanae the third protagonist - from her being a shrine maiden in Project Shrine Maiden, to ZUN stating that she was created with ease of inserting into different storylines in mind and outright calling her Reimu's rival in SCoOW, to her being another Hakurei Shrine regular alongside Marisa in WaHH to his general tendency to make EoSD-MoF characters into protagonist as exemplified by HSiFS.
