Whilst taking down the listing this week, I noticed something curious. It would appear that Tsumairo Shoujo/Sweet Young Wife, whilst having a product page and being linked on the front page, doesn't actually exist in mangagamer's catalog proper. For example, it's not listed in the catalog popularity ranking, checking ammolite's titles doesn't list it, and even searching for "sweet" doesn't bring it up. It's possible that mangagamer may have changed how preorder titles work recently, or this could be a special consideration for the content of the title itself, or it could be a simple error. It is an interesting curiosity though.

Eh, it could be simply that PQube is publishing it for them in Europe (like they do with Marvelous Titles). It would mean more if the Steam page changed.

Honestly I think it's because PQCube has a proven track record of translating games and bringing them to PS store. Which makes sense why Japanese would trust PQCube over Sekai right now.
>>
>>16980114
>It's possible that mangagamer may have changed how preorder titles work recently
That can't be true because Funbag Fantasy hardcopy shows up like it's supposed to in those cases you mentioned.

>or this could be a special consideration for the content of the title itself
Highly unlikely, since Sweet Sweat is a similar title and still shows up.

>or it could be a simple error.
This most likely.
>>
>>16980626
The difference is that official companies are pretty much guaranteed to release it eventually. And if you go by no updates for a long time, then just about all of JAST's list would be deleted too.
>>
>>16982020
Are people even hyped for this? It was originally a remake of a much older VN by the company. Libra isn't a very well-regarded moege at all.
>>
>>16982284
There isn't much hype about it because the Kickstarter for it was like a year ago and it's not being put out by any of the main localization companies.

That said, I'm interested in it, if only because I haven't read a >50 hour VN in a while. Also will get me in the chuuni mood for DI
>>
>>16982316
>mfw I'm so glad I finished DI before you EOPs got your hands on it
>>
>>16982316
From what I've read it isn't very good as a chunni title. It's just very repetitive with its action scenes.

Its moege aspect isn't very good either. It can't decide if it's a true love story or a harem. Basically, MC picks one girl as his lover and tells the other heroines that they cant' be his lovers, but he still fucks them and cheats on the heroine he chooses anyway.

The Subahibi listing didn't originally have a video, only screenshots. They added one when someone in the comments told them they needed one.

It sounds more like incompetence than a troll.
>>
>>16983159
It may be incompetence as opposed to a fake entry, but the same was mostly true for the fake White Album entry on Steam Greenlight last year, posted by the user "Leaf" that linked to a video by a new Youtube account made to look like a legitimate Leaf Youtube channel.

Best teacher I've met so far was in Sakura Season. She sees you being in love with the classmates and decides to help you learn how to have sex properly.

If only most teachers were that kind.
>>
So Quof, who I understand to be "your guy" ended up writing his extrapay shill article for tsumairo shoujo, and in it he said
>"I translated Sweet Young Bride which we at MangaGamer are treating as a kind of “sequel” to Sweet Sweat in Summer, a beginning of perhaps a long and fruitful series of Sweet localizations from Ammolite."

So the next loli title from ammolite would be https://vndb.org/v19092 which seems to be far more pedo judging from it's story summary at http://www.ammolite-game.com/amml_012/amml_012_story.html

Now https://vndb.org/v19092 already has an english title, so what'll they do to it? Just append it Sweet Little Twins? That almost sounds even more pedoy than just leaving it Little Twins.

Given that I dunno if MG's got the balls to get that pedo yet, there's an alternative that they might be talking about https://vndb.org/v16874 which looks... kinda boring. Judging from the story summary it seems like it's about a protagonist who's got the usual "scary anime eyes" which gets him labelled a delinquent but which also happens to make his two classmates wet. Almost so boring as to be unlikely.

What do you think /jp/?
>>
>>16984830

Damn, I like those preview CGs.
>>
>>16984830
Doesn't matter, it's not Monobeno or Tanuki soft games.
>>
>>16984830
>there's an alternative that they might be talking about https://vndb.org/v16874
No because that VN doesn't have lolis.
>>
>>16984938

Well no shit, but like I said, little twins might still be too hardcore for mangagamer.

If that's the case, all quof said was
>perhaps a long and fruitful series of Sweet localizations from Ammolite
>>
>>16984830
Probably just call it Sweet Twins. It's not like the other two games had sweet in the title either. There's nothing really wrong with dropping the naming convention entirely if they want to though.

I don't think it looks that much more pedo than the other two games. MG will probably only get the (arguably only borderline) lolige unless there is obvious demand for the other titles. After the lolis are gotten, they'll nab more NTR games from the company's one of other brands (Appetite) or something that's fethistic in nature.

As for loli titles, there's this https://vndb.org/v18576 and https://vndb.org/v20430 as well, and I think there might be enough of a niche for shota titles for MG to try https://vndb.org/v19607.

>>16984830
Ichikawa Noa games will sell, whatever they are.
>>
>>16985149
>I don't think it looks that much more pedo than the other two games

Did you read the story summary? It's about a guy who's entrusted with his nieces and they're calling him papa and talking about his "white pee"

>https://vndb.org/v18576 and https://vndb.org/v20430

Those aren't loli titles.

If I understood it correctly, there's no route for her in the original at all, not that they decided to not translate her route.
I see 1-2 scenes of her in the panda gallery. Now, I don't know if this happens in the common route or if it's a bonus story, but I'm hoping these will be in the EOP release as well.

I doubt they'd do a big title, because they'd be on their own trying to promote it. Even lewdgamer showed they won't do articles about lolige when Sweet Young Bride was announced. I don't think they were expecting to quickly sail pass $20k. They made sure the project wasn't dependent on the Kickstarter in the event that the Kickstarter fails, and the first couple Stretch goals were $22k and $24k, not much above the initial goal. It might be a bit below their expectations, but it seems to be mostly on track and on a pace to reach its goal.

They also have been adding tiers to it, but with Fruitbat's limited abilities to actually reach anyone and choosing a completely unknown niche doujin title, it's not a surprise that it hasn't taken off. Not that the latter is unique to this Kickstarter, they made a fortune with some gameplay titles on Steam a few years ago and Eiyuu*Senki probably did well on console, but none of their niche doujin VNs from the last year are above 2k on Steamspy.
>>

Assuming that it isn't from a new partner, there aren't a lot of choices of companies for Mangagamer to license a gameplay title from.

As far as I know, there's Alicesoft, Baseson (or some other brand under Nexton), and Liarsoft. All of these seem unlikely, but assuming Softhouse Seal hasn't come back to Mangagamer, there aren't any other companies I can think of.
>>
>>16992380
Circus has a few games to pick from though that's unlikely as well.

I feel basing the level of the game on the con is a bad idea. It's much more likely they are announcing it simply because it fits the release slot(and is guaranteed to be done unlike Del Sagno) and not because it belongs at some other convention. So it could very well be Evenicle or Rance.
>>
>>16992380
Softhouse Seal at least seems to be looking Westward still, or at least they licensed out a nukige not to long ago for that mobile platform. Of course that doesn't mean they'll work with MG again.

The dev's ask.fm revealed it's Nutaku first, so timed exclusive. It'll still most likely end up at MG soon after.

>>
>>16992541
The gameplay eroge is supposed to release next after Sweet Wife. Since Mutiny doesn't have a release date even on Nutaku, there's no telling when it'll release on MG. Since the date of it is so uncertain, it's unlikely Kouryuu would have mentioned as that being the next title.
>>
>>16992559
I think MG's next release after Sweet Bride will be Dies irae if they carry it at launch. The gameplay title likely won't launch until sometime next month, so it could be anything.
>>
>>16992564
That doesn't exactly count as a MG release though, they're just a distributor in that case.

It's probably some budget nukige with gameplay.

They actually got money out of the Cool Japan initiative to partially fund the localization.

I wonder where they go from here though, they might be able to get some people to unsuspectingly buy it, especially if they decide to put it on Steam, but this is just the first of a four part release, and I can't imagine that volume 2 would be a success even if they somehow don't do poorly with volume 1. Furigana is something you would read in things like One Piece or Shounen manga. Beyond that is when just basic kanji is used. I would recommend slice of Life or to love ru as those are usually just basic vocab and grammar to read.

They're easier to read than something more hardcore but you still need like a 10k word vocabulary(to get any enjoyment out of it and not have it be a chore)+the first few are slow going as you learn all the sexual vocab.

If you're still on furigana then it's highly unlikely you've got a vocabulary that large.

>>

Tlwiki, hongfire, ulmf might know what you need.
>>
>>16999520
You need an unpacker and repacker. Tlwiki, has a list of outdated tools that might work with the VN you are thinking of doing, but for some engines you will probably have to look further afield or make it yourself.
What was you thinking of translating?
>>
>>16999553
>>16999664
Alright. I'll make sure to snoop around TLwiki, hongfire and ULMF. I might have to ask around there how to make an unpacker/repacker it seems.

I didn't have a definite project yet. Just getting my feet wet to see if it's doable for one person, or if I should just jump on an existing team.
>>
>>16999698
List off your favourite untranslated VNs. Someone passing by with tech knowledge may volunteer to work on one of them or at least point you in the right direction for some of them.
>>
>>16999698
>Just getting my feet wet to see if it's doable for one person
At minimum, you might want to consider getting an editor. A one person project is doable for short-medium titles, but is prone to typos/errors that you may miss out on and an editor will help clear those up.
There is also Fuwanovel if you are desperate as you might get lucky and someone might jump in to help with the hacking/engine work. Expect some people to ask for sample scripts to prove you aren't a lost cause though.

>Maybe MG will get the message and not license any more of it.

That'd be terrible. Hopefully they'll instead get the message that following up mikan with an even less loli title is pretty lame.
>>
>>17002080
Given how some lolige fans have brushed off Sweet Young Pride as a boring ammolite title, it's possible that it just won't sell that well. It's low budget anyway, so it'll still likely turn a profiit.
>>
>>17002092
Following up a flop with an expensive title wouldn't be likely. If Young Bride doesn't sell well they wouldn't have confidence in how a bigger lolige would perform.
>>
>>17002072
Sweet Wife being censored probably hurts sales.

To be fair, short of a hyped Alicesoft title, I don't think any title would dislodge Rance VI from first place for long. It being cheaper than the long nukige while being about as long and having solid gameplay by eroge standards helps a lot.

This is very much in line with Steamspy numbers on many recent titles. It has been a rough time for (not already big or otome) VNs on Steam since last Summer (compared with 2014-early 2016), and while larger VNs have stabilized somewhat, more unknown niche/doujin stuff has continued to fall off (aside from Nekonin)

>>17002396
Fan translations are hardly the issue they are dealing with, but rather the flood of garbage onto Steam that has made it difficult to get exposure (and for actually good titles to stand out), as well as helped kill off much of the impulse buying that drove both VNs and other niche games to thrive a couple years ago.

>>
>>17002068
For half the companies it is because they suck though. You can't expect to be ignoring your customers and then go "I wonder why they don't buy my product."

When I feel a company actually bothered to care about their customers, I'm faster with buying their products.
>>
>>17003056
>>17003090

I'm just hoping they didn't get the rights to any other titles, and in particular the Moonstone titles initially listed were only there when E2 was negotiating and Moonstone eventually turned them down. I'm sure they figured out that there was going to be a disaster well before the release (even Primula removing the E2 label happened well before the release), and if they were trying to get any other projects in motion they would have wanted to do so before they lost any chance to license anything else after releasing this.
>>
>>17003269
It's not that simple, because these companies that had such success during the Steam craze didn't get fans of their company, but fans of particular games (and there was no way to capture most of the audience from the craze, since they were just going from meme game to meme game). Fruitbat Factory for example has sold more than 300k copies of Orange Juice 100% on Steam, and has 5 other titles between 30k and 80k from 2012 through late 2015. While all of their VNs on Steam have landed flat with less than 2k type sales, even their non-VN titles from 2016 in line with their early successes haven't done nearly as well as their older titles, with the best being an early 2016 release just shy of 10k.

Their main problem isn't with the type of person who would see Chuusotsu and decide if they want to buy it or not based on what they think of Fruitbat Factory as a company, but rather losing the opportunity of getting tens of thousands of sales for a title like Chuusotsu purely on being a cheap VN on Steam suitable for impulse buying (and having the chance to get popular streamers to play it). Even without Steam keeping the floodgates open the original market wouldn't have been sustainable in the long term regardless, but the flood of crap helped kill it off much more quickly. The current situation puts a strain on plans for all the VN localization companies going forward, especially for projects that were put in the pipeline back during the end of the craze and were planned with much higher expectations.
>>
>>17002396
>t.Mangagamer shill
>>
>>17002954
It's far more than just the Sakura games, there is an absolutely huge amount of (often low quality) OELVNs and indie/doujin games that have been put on Steam the last few years. Sekai Project alone has put roughly 40 titles on Steam (not counting several Sakura titles before they lost the rights) since the beginning of 2016 (not all VNs), but that is only a small drop in the bucket. Not that the tagging is perfect, but a quick look and Steam looks to have had 93 releases with the "visual novel" tag from the start of 2017, after nearly 250 releases in 2016, before getting into non-VN indie/doujin games also targeting a similar market.

There are too many variables involved to get an exact idea about how Phantom Trigger did solely on Steam, but with it being out for a couple weeks it is clear that at least that it wasn't some kind of huge hit. That said, it doesn't look like it did nothing on Steam either, but if I had to guess Frontwing isn't going to be thrilled with the Steam performance of this higher profile title designed from the ground up for Steam (and obviously, it is well below their expectations from when they greenlit it, which according to that one interview was back in May 2015, right in the middle of the Steam craze).

On the other hand though, they actually have managed to pull in another $102k from the Backerkit, putting the crowdfunding total up to $285k. Granted most of that new funding would have been from selling Grisaia boxes rather than Phantom Trigger.
>>
>>17005044
Phantom Trigger is overpriced. $15 for 3 hours of reading each. The story and characters are really meh too.
>>
>>17004832
The Cartagra bit with the supernatural stuff was really dumb, because it's revealed in an info dump literally minutes from the end of the game in the true route, after the majority of the game is resolved, and isn't even really relevant to most of the games mysteries. They could easily have not included it and it would have been better off for it.
>>
>>17005044
Phantom trigger was the first KS with good rewards in it, so they probably got 300% more money than they would have if they had run it like any previous campaign.
>>
>>17005314
Obviously the Grisaia box was well liked, considering the $100k they got from backerkit, but that wasn't available until backerkit. But even the main campaign did benefit from people going after the higher priced goods, they averaged $107 per backer and managed to roughly match what Sharin did despite having 1700 backers compared to Sharin's 2400.

About the best the fujos can hope for is that somehow this all amounts to a breach of contract. Even if that's the case, I'm pretty sure they'll just revoke the rights and be even more hesitant to hand them out to anyone else.

Sucks to be them.
>>
>>17007948
I'm guessing the Japanese grant money (which presumably includes funding for works on the latter 3 parts) is another complicating factor. Especially if E2 pulled the same type of overpromising with them that they pulled with the Western community. Either way it will be interesting to see what happens going forward, although even if E2 somehow manages to keep the rights I can't imagine parts 2-4 doing anything sales wise.

It's always the risk of going with the new startup or working with unverified talent. Even if this is by far the worse localization to come out of the surge of interest in VNs, it's hardly the only disappointing release by either a new startup, or to come from untested translators who end up doing a poor job for a self publishing efforts.

Apparently before they nuked their facebook page, E2 deleted all posts about Volume 1 of Taisho Alice in an effort to hide fan criticism. They then said volume 2 is coming this summer.

And then the guy in charge sent his friends to try and convince people that the translation was good. The fans did not respond well.

What a mess.

Sharin no Kuni resolution downgrade.

>Lastly, we have a slight correction to make about some information in the previous update. Originally, we announced that the resolution of the game would be 1280x720 for PC and 1024x768 for the PS Vita. Unfortunately, this was slightly out-of-date information. The correct resolutions are 800x600 (4:3) for PC and 960x544 (16:9 equivalent) for Vita. Sorry for the mix up!

>>
>>17009659

I imagine they just opted to use the existing PC version as a base and cut out the H-scenes for Steam, rather than going through with their original plan to backport the console version to PC and deal with the mess of putting it back together and add the H-scenes from the main game and fan disk. It is an easy way to reduce costs and programming headaches, but it is the sort of thing that really shouldn't have been announced only after the Kickstarter's conclusion (as while they say they are just updating the previous update, during the Kickstarter itself they listed the resolution as either 1280x720 or 1024x728 and the purpose of the first update was saying they choose 1280x720).

Separate from that though, judging by that team listed in the update Frontwing seems to be giving it the Muv Luv treatment rather than a quick edit to the fan translation.
>>
>>17010537
Even though I personally don't care, I expected some people to be mad.

Rather than Muv-Luv, which was officially an edit of the original translation, this seems to be a full blown retranslation.

damn Sukisuki, Dai Segno and Princess Evangile: W Happiness all in beta
>>
Since Bocchi Musume is planned for summer and is only in scripting, and Dal Segno, SukiSuki, and the PE fan disk will likely release by or around the end of summer since they are all currently in beta. If https://vndb.org/v15077 really is one of the planned announcements, then whether that VN announcement is planned for AX or Otakon may influence the release date of Suki Suki. PE might be pushed out as early as possible because a Moonstone game will probably be announced at AX, but we'll see. Dal Segno is probably the lowest priority of the three and may be released after Bocchi Musume since Da Capo 3 came out relatively recently.
>>
MG updates confirmed SukiSuki, the Princess Evangile fandisc, and Dai Sengo are in Beta, along with confirming Higurashi Kai as a whole is through TLC and editing. Sorcery Jokers is also up to 93% translated.

Separately, Sekai's is doing a 2nd stream for the week tonight since they won't do one next week because of Anime Central. The noteworthy thing though is they look to be focusing the stream on Wagamama High Spec, so there is a chance we'll get some information on that tonight. Of course, they might just show it off and not say anything else with Anime Central in a week.
>>
And MG is testing out Golden Fantasia"s online multiplayer
>>
>>17011110
Only x days until Suki Suki (patched) is out.
>>
>>17011110
They also got some big streamer to come on so Sekai might actually expect to have some audience tonight, which would make any announcement on Wagahigh more likely, or at least give them a reason to give an Anime Central preview. Their usual weekly streams have stagnated to just 20-30 viewers on average, probably because they have been generally showing OELVN titles no one cares about.
>>
>>17011110
PE, Dal Sengo, and Sukisuki will all probably come out by the time august end. Assuming the betas take one month, I could see MG releasing them in 3 week intervals so they don't cannibalize each other sales.

>>
For what it is worth, there wasn't any news on the Sekai stream for Wagahigh or anything else, but they skipped their normal announcements section because the stream started late after someone got stuck in traffic. The Wagahigh demo they were playing in the stream couldn't display CGs for some reason, so they seem to still be having some technical issues.
>>
>>17012071
>Also i do think Japanese companies are getting comfortable and getting use to paying someone in house to do it for them.

That is surely true of Visual Arts and Frontwing, but smaller eroge companies aren't as likely to follow, especially now that the Steam craze has dropped off, and those that do without knowing what they are getting into aren't likely to find good results. There aren't exactly a ton of huge titles out there still to be picked up, but none of the established VN companies are going to find a shortage of HD moege to license.

Gaiden hasn't even been announced by MG yet.

This is why the Japanese devs shouldn't just the gun. minori did something similar last year when they announced that they'd have MG translate Trinoline when MG knew nothing about the announcement either.

Learn to tell the difference between translation and localization. Localization is always about rewriting everything so someone who never wanted to play the game can understand it.

Scanlators do in general just translate what is written without changing it.

At the very least, I doubt Waffle would have announced it if the negotiations weren't completed at least. Do the Japanese generally care? Waffle probably just wanted to brag to its fans.

If the contract was just completed when they announced it, MG might not release the game itself until sometime next year though. I think they'll announce it this year at least. It shouldn't suffer the same fate as Baldr Sky if nothing else where the project is stuck in eternal limbo for years after the announcement.

If you're localizing something into english and don't want to change stuff because "it'll be different", then I want you to quit now and burn all the stuff you've worked on so far.

for humanity.
>>
>>17016256
Replacing an obscure 2ch reference with something an English reader might be closer to, while keeping in mind the characters and still preserving the general meaning of what was said, is something completely different from irrationally changing someone's name.
>>
>>17016256
Changing names in localizations is almost universally agreed to be cancerous behavior.
>>
>>17016272
there is no reason to keep "Yuuki" as the name of the character other than irrational fidelity to a language that makes no sense in english. there is no set rule in english for 2u's other than loan words from latin. the only rule for 2 u's in english was the rule that the "w" sound be written as "uu" in the past.

because there is no reason to keep "Yuuki", changing the name to the similar "Yuki", an act which doesn't change the meaning of the name in western eyes, cannot be described as "irrational". If "Yuuki" was a name for men and "Yuki" a name only transexuals use and therefore completely changes the nuance of the script, then you would have a point.

a name is only a word used to identify a character. Yuki is easier on the eyes for western audiences, and is close enough to Yuuki that it retains that Japanese feel without being alien enough to get western audiences going "what the fuck is that?"
>>
>>17016274
>universally agreed
by weebs
>>
>>17016305
Obviously, the problem is that there's no line above the u, if it was there, it would be perfectly alright and totally not look awkward at all in an English game.
>>
>>17016305
>geting this triggered by a name

and they call weebs autists
>>
>>17016383
weebs ARE autists.

i'm not "triggered" by the name. i wasn't the person who originally cried about paid translators changing the name in their translations. i'm merely giving the reasons why only weebs would get upset by Yuuki being changed to Yuki. i really have no issue with either being used.
>>
>>17016305
I don't even know why I'm replying to this pile of shit, but sure.
>there is no reason to keep "Yuuki" as the name of the character other than irrational fidelity to a language that makes no sense in english. there is no set rule in english for 2u's other than loan words from latin. the only rule for 2 u's in english was the rule that the "w" sound be written as "uu" in the past.
The names are pronounced in Japanese, not English. The romanization works as a guide for correct pronunciation. English rules matter little to none at this point.
>changing the name to the similar "Yuki"
This baffles me. How can you think that names can be used interchangable only because they look similar while romanized? They don't look similar in Japanese at all. You can use completely different kanji, even just one kanji for Yuki. Not only that, but Yuki can also be a short-form of longer combined names such as Yukihime.
>a name is only a word used to identify a character
Now this sentence is truly euphoric. I find no retorts to that one. You should apply to NISA (who, by the way, have changed the names of characters before)
You also tried to use weebs as an insult. Who do you think is going to read that VN? Normalfags? Keep dreaming, but preferably not here.
Lastly, please stop samefagging so brazenly. It's terribly obvious with your lack of capitalization, language and terrible paragraph formatting.
>>
>>17016396
>weebs ARE autists.
>calling your target audience names in order to sell your product to them

>>
>>17016305
I happen to have a name no English person could ever read, but I would appreciate if they could put in the effort to spell it correctly. I'm sure the poor cartoons feel the same. Maybe we need a law about this together with all their sex laws.
>>
>>17016418
I don't even know why I'm replying to this shit, but sure
>The names are pronounced in Japanese, not English. The romanization works as a guide for correct pronunciation. English rules matter little to none at this point.
english readers will be reading the english text as a guide to how to pronounce those words in their heads. in the instance where you're localizing for the english audience, english rules are the ONLY ones that matter
> How can you think that names can be used interchangable only because they look similar while romanized?
they have no meaning. they are arbitrary words for identification.
>They don't look similar in Japanese at all.
english audiences don't know japanese so this point is lost on them.
>You can use completely different kanji, even just one kanji for Yuki. Not only that, but Yuki can also be a short-form of longer combined names such as Yukihime.
all the stuff you just mentioned is useless to english audiences not familiar with FRICKEN KANJI.
>You also tried to use weebs as an insult. Who do you think is going to read that VN? Normalfags?
this type of localization can be applied to both anime and manga, both considerably more mainstream and less ... weebish. i have nothing against translators translating a name to Yuuki, i have problems when people start to say it's the only way to do things.
>Lastly, please stop samefagging so brazenly. It's terribly obvious with your lack of capitalization, language and terrible paragraph formatting.
i'm making it obvious who i am by deliberately not capitalizing words. you're welcome
>>
>>17016467

>>
>>17016467
>they have no meaning. they are arbitrary words for identification.
So you would be fine with them changing every heroine's name to "Girl A", "Girl B", "Girl C" etc.?
>>
>>17016491
people get annoyed when the japanese flavor of the text is lost and the names made more western.

otherwise western fans wouldn't be able to tell the difference if the localizers used the japanese words for 'girl ay' 'girl bee' and etc.

but english names often don't have a meaning. surnames used to, but first names not really. changing them into categories that do have meaning like 'girl a' or 'dickhead b' is very ... unusual
>>
>>17016511
Alright, let me change the question.
Would you be fine with them switching up the heroines' names?
Ayame would be called Yuuki.
Yuuki would be called Mahiru.
Mahiru would be called Chiho.
Chiho would be called Rinka
Rinka would be called Ayame.

That "preserves" the flavor, so there's no problem with that according to you, right?
>>
>>17016538
i haven't read the vn these names come from. however, if there's no meaning added to these names in game that's explained to the english audience, then why would the english audience care which one is named Chiho? Chiho means nothing in english, it's just a foreign word.

if the name becomes important, and that importance is conveyed to the english audience, then it becomes harder.

in other words, if you want a name to be important then you need to give the english audience a reason to consider it important. in most vns this isn't the case (this is why it's bad to make sweeping statements, there are always exceptions where it is important.)
>>
>>17016575
basically it means if you really care about accuracy, you just gotta read it in japanese and people need to stop bitching when localizations change things, because changing things is what localizations do
>>
>>17016665
or you know just translate it instead of westernizing it, after all its a bunch of weebs reading it and not chad normalfag
>>
>>17016699
well, vns that translate and not localize always end up sounding terrible and making the original author sound incompetent. it's always a trade off with localizations.

also please use capitals to begin a sentence, because now it just looks like i'm a crazy person talking with myself ...

Every time I see a "u" dropped in Japanese I rage. Every time I see Toukyou written "Tokyo", whatever that means (how do people even know what city this refers to if it isn't spelled correctly?), I punch another hole through my wall. There's only one wall left now. The winter was harsh.

If anyone want go deep on name localization, I recommend Kingdoms anime. It has the Japanese voices using one reading of kanji, and English text using another one. I suspect it is Japanese reading in voice and Chinese in English.

This gives you the beauty of spelled names in text being completely different to what is said. But this is alright because only weebs would use Japanese voices and suffer, while all true westerners would use English voices and think it is proper.

Of course the base issue here is that Japan localized the names because they don't have X's and other letters. So the English is more correct, it just isn't made to be used with Japanese voices (which is the only moment you would use the subtitle option).

This would have been a non-issue if americans could focus on the task of translating instead of think they have a job in rewriting things to what it should have been to look better for a history freak who happened to choose an anime in English with subtitles in English.

The worst is when someone spells Konnichiwa as Konichiwa.

Kingdom anime names always confuse the hell out of me just bc they wanted to be consistent with the manga...

The real reason that distinguishing between "u" and "uu" in an English transliteration of a Japanese name is pointless is that English cannot make the distinction between IPA [u] and [u:], long and short "u", as it only contains [u:]. So "Fuuko" and "Fuko" would be pronounced exactly the same in English. The same principle applies to the other vowels as well, so "Tokyo" and "Toukyou" would be pronounced exactly the same. The spelling distinction has no purpose. If it bothers you, just pretend there's simply an omitted macron above the vowel, which would signal its length.

Not him but Ah-oy. How far off am I

That is a correct approximation in English.
