Playing the April Fools Hack9 edit "Real" reminded me of things, and so I stumbled across this:
https://i.warosu.org/jp/thread/16675758

Yes, there was an attempt to translate Hack9 actually quite a while ago. I had all of the text translated and the hacking part was almost done too, but the guy who was supposed to hack the game just called it quits for vague reasons. Mostly it was just the area names that weren't working properly iirc.

If someone's interested in finishing/redoing the hacking part, I wouldn't mind sharing the translated text (csv file).
Though looking by the progress in that thread, that someone else might already have it all translated too. I don't really care whose translations will be used, as I'm not too proud of mine either, but do note that the text length and byte size limitations can and will be a pain in the ass. Unless someone comes up with a workaround for those, of course.

But yes, it would definitely be cool to have these games translated, especially Hacker9 in all of it's horrifying glory, and Ghost94 because it's actually surprisingly good. I'm not very fond of Hack9 (Ghost92 is the better version), but it was logical to go for it first.

>Playing the April Fools Hack9 edit "Real"
You got a hold of the download? Could you upload it somewhere? I missed it.

>If someone's interested in finishing/redoing the hacking part, I wouldn't mind sharing the translated text (csv file).

I was the one that made the that thread. I was actually translating Hack9 on my own as well (I've translated the dialogue for levels 1 to 4, and I'm starting on level 5 and then end). If you wouldn't mind I'd like to see it so I can compare with what I've done.

In the last thread I made:

https://i.warosu.org/jp/thread/S16726879

Hacker9, the 4th Ghost9Solid Demo, and the Intro/first mission for Ghost93 were translated (mind you none of the item name/descriptions weren't done, just the story).

So far I've finished Ghost93 (including the extra mission), and once I'm done with Hack9, I think I'll work on either Ghost942 (the story will be identical except for the Lost Level), or start on Ghost9 1&2.

In a few days I'll make a thread with what I've done so far.

I really wish I could have helped on the hacking part. If I was knowledgeable on the subject I would have made my own translation patches already.

On a somewhat related note, after translating Ghost93 was kind of surprised that the secret mission (that you get when you have a FIND_CNT < 20) was a shout-out to the opening of the first Ghost in the Shell movie. Even down to the representative's last words, the exclusion of the word 'democratic' was a nice touch.

And given what you learn about the world in the last Ghost9Solid demo basically that all of the characters are virtual beings inside the 9-system, making then 'Ghosts' it was all the more pertinent.

Hi. My name is wahiko.
I am the creator who created HACK 9.
I am a 34-year-old computer engineer born in Osaka.
I was watching your translation activity in 4chan from March.

I'm very happy to translate my game.
And I created English translation version HACKER 9 based on the translated sentences in the attached URL.

If you are the author of the translation of the URL, please give me permission to use.

And please give permission to distribute English translation version HACKER 9 on my HP.
I am waiting for a reply.

The picture I attached is a self-portrait written by my friend.
Sentences of self-portrait blowing are not related to this case.
>>
Wow, and just when I was about to reply too! If that really is Wahiko then I don't think I dare to post the link for Real. Let's just say it was a version of Hack9 where you played as Kunikida. It had new dialogue in the beginning and a few lines after the end, but the actual main game was the same.

I might as well link the csv though, from the little I looked your translation seems more natural (looking back I'm surprised by how awkward some of my lines are), but at least mine includes the item descriptions and has space limitations taken in consideration:
http://firestorage.jp/download/acee78a2794732f2ac9acd43dd68092c792caa59xtda5lli79

I didn't want to include the translated exe because it's "extended" for the English text, so antivirus programs won't like it at all.

Welp the link's not working

If that's really you then, yes please, I give permission , by all means.

I have no other proof of authorship except for the further translations I've made of Hack9 that I haven't released before:

I'm not going to say that my translations are 100% accurate (given that my fluency in Japanese is almost nil), but given some of the tools available I've tried to make the best translation I could.

Thank you very much for making these games, and I look forward to Hack9Solid.

Oh, and if you would be so kind, could you tell us the proper readings of the names of some of the characters? like 須藤, 13 Commanders (十三将), 13 Generals (十三大将), and the 13 Heavenly Generals (十三天将)?

When translating I could only guess what some of the intended readings were.

>>16870765
>If that really is Wahiko then I don't think I dare to post the link for Real. Let's just say it was a version of Hack9 where you played as Kunikida.

Oh, okay.

I'll go over the csv when I get a chance but thanks.
>>
Here's a very rough translation I made of the opening of Ghost942.

The game wasn't hacked or anything, just a subbing of the recorded intro. I think I did this just when I started to translate Hacker9 in earnest.
>>

>Hack9Solid.

Oops, I meant Ghost9Solid.

Then again, seeing a complete version of Hack9Solid wouldn't be bad either
>>
>>16872953

Yeah, looking again there is some revising to be done with your translations too, though some of the sentences are definitely better than mine. I could try combining the best of both for Hack9, and do proofreading for the rest, if it's ok by you. (I've played the games of course, and I'm quite fluent in Japanese)

For example, you're referring to Snort as a he, but from what I remember that "twist" wasn't revealed until before the final boss. So I've avoided using gender pronouns for him in my translation.
>>
>>could you tell us the proper readings of the names of some of the characters? like 須藤, 13 Commanders (十三将), 13 Generals (十三大将), and the 13 Heavenly Generals (十三天将)?

Sudo(須藤)
13 Commanders (十三将)
13 Generals (十三大将)
13 Heavenly Generals (十三天将)

I think the name of the organization is too long.
I think that organization name should be abbreviated.

>Sudo(須藤)
>13 Commanders (十三将)
>13 Generals (十三大将)
>13 Heavenly Generals (十三天将)

What I meant was, I am unsure of the proper readings of the names of the members in the organizations. Here are some of the romanizations I've made of their names:

十三将:

幸田: Kouda
新美: Niimi
島尾: Shimao
梅原:Umehara
有島: Arishima
正岡:Masaoka
二宮:Ninomiya
狩野:Kanou
本居:Motoi
北大路: Kitaooji
頼山: Raizan (Yoriyama?)
野口: Noguchi
国木田:Kunikida

十三大将:
松下: Matsushita
新島: Shinjima
東郷: Tougou
岩倉: Iwakura
高杉: Takasugi
山本:Yamamoto
杉田:Sugita
柳生: Yanagii
陸奥: Mutsu
三木: Miki
島津:Shimadzu
犬養:Inukai
勝: Shou

十三天将:
大久保: Ookuho
大隈: Ookuma
夏目:Natsume
板垣:Itagaki
一万田:Ichimanda
宇垣:Ugaki

If some of the romanizations were wrong, I wanted to know how to say them correctly. Even if you could just post the correct kana it would be perfect.

Thanks again.

Oh, and before I forget, what are the genders of the members?

>I want you to point out the English version of hacker 9.

Sure, I can either make a new thread, or post a few clips of the translated dialogue (in /v/, /wsg/ ).

>Also, please teach me how to introduce the English version of hacker 9 abroad.

Hmm... That's a bit tricky.

Perhaps making a thread in /jp/ or /v/ (although I have some reservations about that, there was some interest in the games at some point). Perhaps making a thread in reddit, or finding a free indie game facebook page.

>I want to release the game for free. I do not want to publish games for a fee using Steam.

Perhaps these pages may help:

http://www.pixelprospector.com/distribution/
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FreewareGames
http://www.indiedb.com/

So Ghost9Solid will be the last in the series? It was nice while it lasted.
If you plan on starting a new game/series, good luck.

>>16875667
>you're referring to Snort as a he, but from what I remember that "twist" wasn't revealed until before the final boss. So I've avoided using gender pronouns for him in my translation.

I was kind of thinking about that as well when I went over your stuff.

>I could try combining the best of both for Hack9, and do proofreading for the rest, if it's ok by you

Please by all means, I was kind of hoping for that kind of help.
-
>>
>>16878124
I believe 新島 is Niijima, 柳生 is Yagyuu and 勝 is Katsu.
Finding out the readings for the names and the vagueness of the genders kind of was part of the fun though (though I'm sure they're all male besides obvious ones like Isuzugawa).

But yeah, I'll try to find time to help with the translations a bit.

>>16876118
For compactness the organizations could just be abbreviated as "The 13", "The Great 13", and the third one could maybe be "The Grand 13" if "Heavenly" is a bit too wordy.

For example "Ninomiya of "The 13" was defeated."
>>
>>16876118
You can put out free games on steam but you have to go through a long process. Pay a $100 fee > Steam Greenlight > Paperwork with valve. But then if you wish you could sell the OST or art or whatever you want as DLC, with the game remaining free to play.
For example these guys put out a doujin game on steam:

Also about the male pronoun thing, I was thinking that they could just be replaced with female pronouns, since when Snort is first introduced, the commander specifically says that he heard that Snort was a girl.

スノートのへや //Snort's Room.
きみがじょせいだときいてきゅうきょよういした// I heard you were a woman* so it was prepared in a hurry.
ここではHP、MPをかいふくすることができる// You'll be able to recover HP and MP here.

>But yeah, I'll try to find time to help with the translations a bit.
Thanks.

>(though I'm sure they're all male besides obvious ones like Isuzugawa).
I kind of figured that too, but I just wanted to be sure.

>For compactness the organizations could just be abbreviated as "The 13", "The Great 13", and the third one could maybe be "The Grand 13" if "Heavenly" is a bit too wordy.

I see, that sounds good too.

When I get a chance, I'll put up the Ghost93 translations.

I'm gonna butt into this conversation and say that the difficulty of the process is likely because Steam's process for accepting games from smaller groups, Greenlight, was being abused to put massive amounts of unplayable crap onto the store. So that's why they made it more difficult to get stuff on.

同姓愛が高じての同一化を達成させるエニグマへの期待を」* //Their identification with same-name(?) love worsened till they pinned their hopes on Enigma that allowed them to succeed.

Thank you so much for your help, the revisions you did look great.

For the time being I stopped translating the last level of Hack9, your translations are probably be better that mine anyway (although I was pleasantly surprised to seethat the translation I did make closely matched those that you has in the csv file). I think I'll get back to it once I finish a mission or two for what I'm working on.

Right now I started working on Ghost9 (once I'm finished that Ghost92 should come along very quickly as the dialogue is almost the same), but now I'm focused on Ghost942. So far I've redone the intro: >>16872978 , Snort's first interaction with Matsushita, and B-Weapon's rescue.

Completing Ghost942 would automatically mean Ghost94 is done, since the dialogue for the main game was untouched. And while I generally avoided translating menu items, perhaps I'll do Matsushita's menu dialogue.

Oh, and for Ghost94/942 I've changed the name of the 13 Heavenly Generals (十三天将) to the 13 Devas (given one of the meanings of 天).

>No way I can keep at your pace though,

It took me forever to finish the translations that I've done.

Hacker9 took about a month, and Ghost93 took a little over 2 weeks
>>
>>16898494
Idk it's still easier than having to come up with the sentences from nowhere, and at least some of your translations are surprisingly good for your supposed lack of fluency.

But here's a few more from Hacker9:
https://pastebin.com/EmZsw1Pn
https://pastebin.com/9AwQbqjB
https://pastebin.com/qMywHAYz

I did take a few artistic liberties, especially with stuff related to The 13 because I tried to avoid gender pronouns as usual

Also the item descriptions are gonna be a pain, there's not nearly enough space for text (because they originally used kanji of course)

Thanks for the feedback.

I put the text through google translate, and it seemed to do a pretty good job so I believe I got the gist of what you said.

In other words, it would be better to use the other anonymous's game script due to space constraints, and that it would be better to use the modified translation.

Agreed.

From what I've seen of the test compile, it looks good so far .

Oh, and I had a question about a particular word in Ghost94/942.

I see the word used a few times: ダンビル

e.g:
ウェポン「ガイガーカウンターでダンビル内を計測してみな
1~100ミリシーベルト/秒のホットスポットがあちこちにある」

Does ダンビル mean, Abandoned Building ? Danville ?

Thanks, and thank you for your support.

Wow, sorry for the confusion, that was just me trying to ask wahiko if it were possible to have two lines for the English item descriptions (because there isn't enough space otherwise), and that it might be a good idea to use the revised translations when I'm done with them.

Also, the ダンビル is most likely based on the Daibiru building in Akibahara, as that's where Ghost94(2) takes place.

Nice job.

>How about the end credits though?

I think (if my memory serves me correctly), it comprised of a list of the various stage's enemies (just like in hack9), followed by the final end credits which I believe we translated/did QC on.

Hopefully it has already been translated (from your Hack9 TLs).

If not, I hope wahiko gets back to us with another list (this one shouldn't be long). Worst case I can just beat the game again and transcribe/TL it.

I am planning to change the following specifications when releasing hacker 9.

1)Zenimax Media has applied for and registered three kinds of "Nuka Cola" trademarks to the US Patent and Trademark Office.I will change the names of Nuka Cola and Quantum to GenenciCola and isotope.

2)The Red Cross mark should not be used without just cause by Geneva Convention.
I will fix the MEDICINE icon.

3) I will abolish the auto save function which makes game play difficult.

4)The music of GHost 93, GHost 94 is using MP3 format. I heard that Ogg format is mainstream abroad, so I am considering changing music.
The reason is that the user will have to enter an MP3 format driver.
>>
>>16969451
I'll have to do some (hopefully final) translation checking this weekend, so I might as well translate those credits and try renaming the rest of the trademarks (Jack Daniel's, Cisco Systems etc) into something less offensive.

Removing the autosave is a good idea, as it is/would've been a huge issue for most people. While it did add some sense of tension, the game is already difficult enough in my opinion.

Also, sorry but what's "Genenci"? Genetic? Genesic?

>Yes, there was an attempt to translate Hack9 actually quite a while ago. I had all of the text translated and the hacking part was almost done too, but the guy who was supposed to hack the game just called it quits for vague reasons. Mostly it was just the area names that weren't working properly iirc.

That was me doing the hacking. I had issues reinserting the area names. You would only get 4 bytes worth of text in English then the rest would be Japanese. This was only my second project of the sort so I ended up putting in a lot of hours trying to figure that out and got nowhere. In the end I stopped because I got picked up by an actual localization company for legitimate work and my contract forbids me from doing competing work. I tried to pass the translation work that was done off someone else I know but they were too busy to take up the project. I'm really surprised at wahiko showing up to handle it himself and happy to see that the work of TCE and others isn't going to waste.

>>16975832
I noticed that on this build you do not lose items in your inventory when reloading a save after dying. Is this just a debugging feature? I would really like to see the loss of items removed, it just feels too brutal. That's part of why I targeted Hack9 instead of Hacker9.

Thanks for the attempt. I initially started translating with no expectation whatsoever, that a proper (i.e quality checked) translation let alone a patch would be made.

I also went through the entire script with a friend of mine. We polished the text quite a bit, and renamed the trademarked items. The Quantum probably doesn't have to be renamed though, as unlike Nuka-Cola, there's no drink with such trademark.

There are a few bug that I caught in Test4:

-The JP1 door that needs 30 servers to open, and Stephan's door make the game seem frozen. To get out you have to press STATUS to call the menu and then dismiss it.

-The end of the PUMPKIN description text has kanji and the end and appends the text of longer descriptions to the end.

-The end text for the normal end is truncated.

-If you have an inventory full of non-weapon items, a hidden item could replace your current weapon (in my case BROADSWORD+3 was replaced with BROADSWORD)

I will check Test 5 to see if the same bugs carried over and look out for more

I'll test it out.

All of the bugs I mentioned here (>>16996851) were indeed in Test 5 (although I haven't tested if the BROADSWORD bug was inherent to the Test version or V1.05).

However I managed to find the cause of this bug:

>The JP1 door that needs 30 servers to open, and Stephan's door make the game seem frozen. To get out you have to press STATUS to call the menu and then dismiss it.

The invisible pause bug is caused when more than 99 servers have been placed in the IDC (in my case there were 100).

When I cleared the game and reset ,I was able to re-enter the IDC once. When I removed the excess server the bug was no longer present.

The same thing occurred when I experimented with a new game.

-When I cleared MASS_PRODUCED_SEAGULL, the end text, as well as the game reset text, were without problems.

-So far from viewing pretty much all of the game's text in-game, there were no more serious issues (except for a perhaps missing piece of punctuation here and there).

Although I have yet to find how to access some of the text from here >>16968017, namely the conversation with Noguchi, and the text with Kitaooji. (I did access the pond garbage text though, no issues)

-The attached webm file is an example of the BROADSWORD bug.

I am about 70% done with the translation of THE_BOTTOM_CAUSE for Ghost94/942. When that is done, I will continue on to translate the LOST_LEVEL, and then perhaps work on the item text for Ghost93/94/942.

In order to maintain continuity I will use TCE's translations for reoccurring items.

If you don't hear from me for a few days, it's probably because I got sick (or worse).

Good luck everyone.

>I am very grateful that you can translate to interested players.

No problem.

It was quite a few years before I found out about the series, and when I curious enough to know exactly what was going on in the story, I said to my self "well, if no one is going to translate it, I'll do it myself". I mean there were other people interested in translating, but the collaboration was there, and is still wasn't there until you showed up.

I'm actually 95% finished with The Bottom Cause (I've translated up to Snort final conversation with Weapon), but I still have to work on the RFC protocol text, the endings and the credits.

Finish your own version if you want, but I do already have the entirety of Hack9 translated (the csv file).

I just need to polish the text a bit (I'll use your versions for inspiration too), and maybe rewrite the item descriptions for two lines if it's possible to have them in Hack9 also.

I don't quite have the free time to do that very soon though

I played through Hack9,Hacker9 and GHost93 during early early 2016, but due to my lacking knowledge of Japanese vocabulary at the time, could only get the gist of parts within the story while roaming about for the rest of it.
