I'm proposing a new katawa shoujo style VN project with a new premise.

'Golden Years.exe'

Start it off as a really generic VN about a group of friends, make it as pornographic and harem as you want, but like katawa shoujo emotional attachment is going to be key

But as the initially generic plot goes on the player will notice that things are off. Sometimes there's random glitches, some things don't make sense. These are minor at first, and the player goes around developing his relationships and everything, getting attached to the characters. But as it goes on and the 'wrongness' gets worse and worse and the player is funneled into investigating it. Eventually they manage to 'break through' and there's this horrible trippy sequence that ends in your character lying down, staring at a grey ceiling.

He gets up, but feels weak. Looks down, his arms are frail and thin, pale, and sickly. The art style has changed, gotten more realistic, moving from conventional cutesy anime shit to mostly realistic and bleak. You look around and see that the entire room is bare, like a steel crack den, and in the centre is a cluster of machinery surrounded by gurneys bearing thin mattresses, and on each is a person, wires trailing out of ports on their skulls. They all look horrific, pale, wrinkled, hair grey and falling out in clumps. They start to wake up.

Your protagonist finds a mirror and looks out onto a horrible cityscape, gunmetal skyscraper tenements blurred by pollution so thick you could hardly see someone ten feet away. The streets below are clotted with wooden shantytowns, some houses, some repulsive food stalls cooking on barrel fires.

As the others wake up you approach the machine and find a floppy disk in it(cause retro futurism leave me alone) with 'Golden-years.exe' written on it.

It turns out you live in a dystopian hellscape, and all those people on the table are people you vaguely knew on the internet. You all decided, in the urban misery, to escape into a simulated world, one that inhibits your memory and makes you think you're really part of it.. Each of you was controlling a character. Those cute anime girls were pollution choked ghoulish hags, worn down and torn up by a blade runner, 1984-like shitscape the likes of which is almost nowhere to be found today, even in deepest poverty. This was a suicide pact you made with internet strangers; splurge on an old, beat up CNS VR system none of you could afford, set the duration dial to two months, and starve to death, happy for once.

Now all through the game, in the nature of the glitches, in character dialogue, you’ve been hinting that this is the case. Like a 16 year old girl would have been discussing seriously concepts with a knowingness and authenticity that was super-incongruous, because she’s sub-consciously remembering shit like her dad getting his knee acid burned straight through so he couldn’t work at the factory anymore, so her mom had to become a prostitute and borrow from gangs. Maybe this girl in particular was a tsundere type character, super vain and obsessed with looks and makeup and kinda bitchy, mostly because on some repressed level she remembered the night her mother came home with her face all cut up after she couldn’t make a payment.

You force the player to confront if they still feel the same way towards these girls. You thought you’d made emotional connections based on who they were on the inside, you overcame their exteriors to get to the true them and liked it, but are you still going to feel that way just because of how they look, because you’re in a grim world where people aren’t so pretty?

Couple of possible endings. Do you settle down with one of the girls in the real world, and both decide to struggle together to find some kind of happiness in a shit-hole, rusted and stained apartment, wondering what in Christ’s name that smell coming from the sink is?

Do you chose to ultimately get back in the machine, essentially commiting suicide?

Do you choose to pointlessly march down what’s called ‘Martyr’s Walk’ the avenue before the centre of government, where citizens who have finally had it with the state of the world will make one pointless protest march, alone or in a small group, before getting cut down by hovering security drones for disloyalty and terrorism.

The game has a lot of room to explore themes of using media as escapism, criticising the kind of escapism and pandering in Japanese media specifically, and examining how you deal with the imperfections of reality compared to idyllic fantasy. Should you keep engaging with the real world, even if fiction is more gratifying? Is beauty really just skin deep, or can you see yourself settling down with someone who looks like old Mellisandra from Game of Thrones because you remember earlier in the game, when some cute anime girl sat on a pier with you and told you her deepest fears, and you remember how warm you felt when you realised that your clumsy attempt at comforting and reassuring her worked.

You can also branch into political themes, with regards to the protest ending, like whether futile political action has value, and just look at what it's like living under that kind of regime, particularly with regards to how it makes you interact with media, and the parallels that has with the actual world.

tl;dr
What kind of girls do I fuck?
>>
>>16816946
Sounds like you can only fuck normal 3d girls.
>>
>>16816973
All fairness most of the fucking happens in the simulation.

But yes if you wanna go the route there will be aggressively an aggresively unsexy scene fucking a real world girl.
>>
Sounds good, anon. Do it.
>>
>>16816982
That sounds really interesting. Sex in the real world is unpleasant and awkward. But in the virtual world it's exciting and exhilarating. That's a popular belief held by many, especially in 4chan. While the real world will not be able to fulfill your every desire, there are things that can only happen in the real world. Mountains of text of girls screaming how their hips are moving on their own will never be the same as holding a real person in your arms and joking how terrible you were.

Where do I sign up?
>>
Sounds OK. Get your internet friends together, Anon.

Anyone else wanna share ideas for VNs? I tend to spend a lot of my free time thinking up stories and pacing, but few are /jp/ related, so far.
I'm certain some of you have come up with VN ideas, though, so I'd love to hear some.
I'll tell you about my sci-fi and noir, though, if you want.
>>
Come back when you have character designs drawn up and names. I need proofs of concept.
>>
>>16816931
>Those cute anime girls were pollution choked ghoulish hags
Dropped.

Your story has no reason to take place in a dystopia; your protagonist could just be a loser and the heroines could just be variations of shrek.

Put them on pastebin and I'll read it.

Don't forget to sage.

Someone please make Rita, Please Respond into a longer VN. I liked the idea of the protag spending their hard earned savings on ascii porn or whatever. I forget exactly but it was funny.

/jp/ already made a VN, though. It took way too long to finish and wasn't that great.

It was the greatest love story of all time, but it took over a year to make a VN that was literally 10 minutes long. The writing was terrible and just last year the writer came back and updated the UI and the script (making it tolerable). Alas, the artfag had no interest in revamping the original, so the shitty old artwork remains.

RIP Dandy Girl. You had a good run.

Damn. I wish I could help make a new one, or help OP, but the /jp/ stereotype is true. I'm a lazy leech without even the talents to help. Can't program, can't draw, can't write.
Feels bad.
>>
>>16836448
>>16836499
I've played through both. It really is crazy how different the quality of the writing is. Too bad artist didn't want to come back and remake/expand it. Could've been great.

The audience for visual novels is small. The audience for visual novels about visual novels is very small. The audience for English visual novels is very small. The audience for English visual novels about Japanese visual novels is really, really fucking small. Making a hundred people if you're lucky.
You also have to consider that you are going up against 君と彼女と彼女の恋。 You are probably not going to win this fight. There are people on this website that would call you a murderer if you delete that VN from your computer and mean every word. We are talking about a VN that has a message preprogrammed in in case immortality is invented. For the few people who really are into VNs about VNs, the last word on the subject has already been written as far as they are concerned.
For everyone else, we really aren't interested in hearing anyone's opinions about escapism. Someone who gets so far into escapism that they end up reading VNs is probably a pretty big fan of escaping into fiction by that point. It's really something that's hard to argue against because it doesn't hurt anyone and only makes people happy. If you wanted to argue against escapism in general and not the reading VN kind, then you should write a story about that instead. Cross Channel handled the subject and was quite popular.
If you are just making this as a general statement against VN readers you should know that they generally don't have any self-esteem already and you're wasting your time. Urobuchi Gen tried to write a VN with the sole goal of making an argument against everything that VN readers are. It's called Saya no Uta and it's one of the most popular VNs of all time. There's just nothing you can say to hurt or convince somebody who's already pretty sure he's human garbage.
By all means, write it. I believe in freedom of expression, if you've got something inside you that needs to come out, go right ahead and give it a whirl. However, if you're doing this in an attempt to write something for other people to enjoy, you should try to come up with a different scenario.

Why don't they take a break once in a while and eat food? Why don't people go into the center of government a different way? Do all the politicians live in the center of government and never leave? If not, why not attack them when they aren't in the center of government? If the government is really hands off, why not start a fire and burn down the whole fucking city? If the government isn't really hands off, why not start a fire and kill everyone that tries to put it out, then burn down the whole fucking city?
>>
>>16837708
I didn't really think that OP was trying to make an anti-escapism message, but I never look for those.
>>
If anyone has artistic talent, I have a running script to a game I wrote awhile back. I'd be willing to part ways with it if anyone thinks they can do anything with it. About 2 hours long or so. 21881 words.

Not OP but I can think of some answers for your questions:
>Why don't they take a break once in a while and eat food?
They sleep inside pods that can feed and wash them. The government originally created them to keep people efficient so they have more time to work. The main cast took this idea and built their computers around it so they could essentially just live in there forever.
>Why don't people go into the center of government a different way?
Not too sure what you meant by this but I assumed you were talking about the Martyr's Walk ending OP suggested. It could be an ending where everyone just gets together and agree to just kill themselves because they realize how pointless life is, yada yada. I do agree that it's a pretty lame way to go.
>Do all the politicians live in the center of government and never leave?
I guess so, people who can afford it can live in nicer places. In this world politicians are just a bunch of circle-jerking buttheads that make themselves richer. I think it would be interesting if one of the MC's friends is one of the politician's kids.
>If not, why not attack them when they aren't in the center of government?
Yeah it would make little sense if they weren't in the center as well. If they weren't then it would make sense if a politician's kids stayed in the virtual world since he's sick of waiting for his parents to be ambushed and killed.
>If the government is really hands off, why not start a fire and burn down the whole fucking city?
The fire can't start by itself. New ending: The Fire Rises.
>If the government isn't really hands off, why not start a fire and kill everyone that tries to put it out, then burn down the whole fucking city?
Are you brave enough to start that fire anon? Will you destroy it all?
>>
>>16849006
>The Fire Rises.
Have we started the fire, brother?

I would read that, a VN about a neet reminiscing about days gone and lost internet friends while trying to fight the current establishment. Then make the plot twist the landlord who he pays rent by his neetbux used to know him from 2008 and wonders what the fuck the neet has done in 9 years and how he kept browsing this dump.
>>
Someone should make a VN about a dude that falls in love with his computer, which has recently acquired freewill.
>>
>>16866418
If you aren't being sarcastic, you should try Digital: A Love Story.

I'm not a fan personally, but the soundtrack alone is worth a playthrough.
