So how did Miku get so popular exactly? I'm not asking that positively/negatively. I'm looking more for some sort of history lesson. It just seems like her popularity exploded and she got a bunch of games. I mean, CFM Vocaloids appear to be the most popular in general. However, Miku towers over the other Voacloids in her very own group. Meiko came before Miku and she doesn't appear to be very popular in comparison. Rin and Luka came after and, while they are more popular than Meiko, they don't appear to be close to Miku. Did Miku just have really good timing and luck?

Combine all of this with being the first, and naturally she gained most of the popularity.

Well for starters she is the one with the Cute voice at the time. And Cute is all that matters in Nipland.

Compare her girly, squeaky voice to the harder voice of Meiko, or the lower voice of Luka. If you look at it that way, and cuteness is the default, then all other voices exist solely for the sake of variation.

Basically Miku is all there is and all other voicebanks are for " when producers feels in a certain mood" type thing.

There's a difference between "muh nostalgia, muh first Vocaloids" and what works and what doesn't, tho

The Cryptonloids all grew popular because the Vocaloid market as a whole was unexplored territory- so there was more risk involved, but a much higher degree of potential success as the technology was revolutionary back then. With them being entirely unheard of before, the idea for character designs went into play to have the consumer grow "attached" /to the product itself/, making them all the more iconic while gathering more potential fans and users, instead of just having a "brand" name to follow (i.e., LEON and LOLA, and how Kaito and Meiko worked much better and are more memorable).

That's why we got a "literally who" chick with teal hair and twintails starring on Letterman, a blue-haired guy obsessed with ice cream, an exhibitionist drunk, a chick with hair that looks like an octopus, and the same exact person but on different sides of a mirror- because if those risks weren't taken, Vocaloid would be dead in the water.

Now, because of how much Vocaloid's blown up over the years, it's probably hella hard to have one of your own grow even as popular as the second-rates (Yukari, GUMI, Gakupo, and in all technicalities Teto)- and even then, if they take those very same risks, there's no guarantee they'll succeed (i.e. Una- who I'll use for these next examples).

So it isn't really nostalgia, or ignoring further advancements in tech- it's the /image/ that everyone associates with /the voice/, and how hard it is to create another Miku. If it's overdesigned (again, Una, and the chick in >>16824142
), then it's a turnoff and people are less likely to use them, even if they have a recognizable (Una's whole shtick being that her VA is one from a fairly popular anime) or hella good voice (Again, if Una's used right, she can be AMAZING- otherwise, a poorly tuned Una is robotic and lacks emotion). If it's underdesigned (Sato- even though she isn't /in technicality/ a Vocaloid, but functions the same, the same thing applies), then right off the bat they're a "literally who" with no iconic features (Even though Sato, from what I've heard, is great on her own). But in certain cases, like the songs linked above, if the existing or new producers work hard to push said over- or under-designed Vocaloids to their limits and make great songs with them, then that could work the same magic over a much longer degree of time than just having an eye-pleasing design.

So that's it, really. The reason people focus on their favorites is that there hasn't been a Vocaloid /with the ability to shake up even the Crypton 6./ Whether it's bad or uniconic designs, bad marketing in general, or their voice either not being that pleasing to the ears or hard to work with, all we can do is wait for another Miku to show up.
