Looks like this franchise has changed a lot but the only thing people seems to boil people's blood is remodels of the original characters giving the overall impression that F/SN and Zero are the only good entries in the series, but giving that most of us got into this so long ago makes me wonder if it was ever good or is just nostalgia.

It's all shit.

Really.

I followed Type Moon pretty thoroughly with just about everything they did, until about when they started going full Grand Order.
That's when they lost me. I can't handle the level of stress that gacha crap gives me.

I was really into Fate for quite a few years. Got hooked by the original animu then read the VN as soon as translations were out, blew crazy amounts of money on Saber merch, spent way too much time in Fate threads on /a/ and /jp/, etc.

The honeymoon ended around the time Zero came out, though, not just because I didn't like Zero much but because it triggered a huge shift in the fanbase, and I finally gave up on the franchise a few years later.

Its a fun setting that combines mythical historic figures, magic and secret workings; some of my favorite things. The writing isnt particularly fantastic, but its not horrific. Some of the characters are well written and enjoyable to learn about or hear.

Zero was legitimately better than stay night.

Were I a professional critic who had to stay "detached," I might agree with you.

Zero lacked most of the things that drew me to F/SN in the first place, though.

Maybe in some aspects, however, it's just too different a format to a visual novel and that made it less appealing to me. What I really did like about Fate was the slowly expanding story that you replayed 3 times + Fate/Hollow Ataraxia as a really neat bonus, in anime there really isn't nearly as big of an immersion and the narration is rather shallow most of the time, it somehow lacks the scaling buildup of browsing through servant pages and discovering their abilities/origin piece by piece, it lacks the detailed explanations of mechanics and nuances and depth, which is generally most showcased in fights, where in anime you generally just seem some servants bash eachother's swords upclose, while in visual novel you get to unerstand what is each servant's power and weakness and how are they trying to exploit them.

It doesn't even mean that the anime is bad by any stretch of the imagination, it's just too different format from the source material to actually capture what was appealing. You can recreate the scenes flawlessly, following every step, you can show what happened, but you cannot describe it properly, capturing the essence of the moment that made it great.

I still like it. It might not be as good as I remember it but I was in love with it for years when I first read it. It hurts a little to see what it has become.

So which one should one pick if they are new to the series?

This, and trips confirm.

It was just another porno game that just so happened to have more background fluff than most other games bothered with.

I only recently read F/SN and watched Zero, and I can say conclusively that F/SN is quite good, though a little too slow at the beginning. Zero has some highlights, but is overall mediocre.

Read the original FSN Visual Novel.
