Does anyone else have trouble learning new words? If I read a Japanese sentence and an English translation I can pick up the words fairly well, but trying to learn new vocab from reading Japanese sentences is really hard for me. I have Rikai-chan installed but it doesn't help at all.

Everybody here is assuming that people who are learning Japanese are learning vocabulary, grammar, kanji, writing, etc. all at the same pace. That's not always true.

When native english learners learn how to read, they don't learn the rules of orthography, they learn how specific words are spelled and pronounced.

Kanji are exactly the same way. Even if you know what a word means and the possible readings of the kanji, you cannot select the correct combination of readings unless you already know what spoken word the kanji word is supposed to map to.

If you really know the spoken language, memorizing which spoken word corresponds to a given sequence of kanji should be easy. If it's not easy, then even a readings deck is not the answer for you.

The whole point of Anki (or Spaced Repetition in general) is helping you remember things you are likely to forget. It does this by making you review before you're likely to forget it.
I you're actually learning japanese, you will see Kana everywhere you look, you really can't avoid it. Adding an extra Anki review every few days/weeks does absolutely nothing for you because you likely have encountered those characters a lot between the reviews.

Each number has a Chinese reading (usually as a number) and a Japanese one (usually as a counter).

There's also some exceptions like the first day of the month is ついたち which isn't derived from いち nor ひと.

4 can be よん or し and 7 can be なな or しち in 'Chinese' pronunciation.

You will just naturally learn how they are used with practice.

だけ, のみ, ただ, and ばかり are variations of "just" or "only". しか is similar, but it works with negatively polarized statements.

だけ means "just so", in terms of amount. It acts like a particle.

俺だけ行く I'm the only one going (Metaphorically: "Only I will go")
俺だけじゃないよ "It's not just me though."

のみ is like a literary だけ with different nuances and grammar patterns.

ただの人間が存在するのみです There are but mere humans.

ただ is related to the idea of "just so", but it focuses on emphasis. In other words, it hones in on what the statement is selecting. Except for specific constructions, taking a true sentence and adding ただ will result in another true sentence; the same is not true of だけ or のみ.

僕はただ子供だよ I'm just a kid.

One construction where ただ is not "just emphatic" is ただ一<counter>. We will review counters later.

ただ一つの問題がある There's just one problem.

ばかり is yet another "only" word. Like だけ and のみ, it changes what the sentence means. It can also be pronounced ばっか or ばっかり. ばかり focuses on /everything falling into this statement/, wheras だけ and のみ focus on /things falling outside of this statement being false/. As such, ばかり is sometimes translated like "He always X" or "The only thing left to do now is X". ばかり cannot be used in negative environments.

犬ばかりだ It's always dogs.

しか is used with negative statements to say that the negative statement is true of everything except for what is tagged with しか, like "but".

僕しかいない Nobody but you is here.

Sometimes (but rarely), しか is used outside of complete statements. In such cases, you can pretend that it "inverts truth" for what's marked. Or, you can pretend that it implies a negative statement with the same truth as some positive one (like "they came" -> "they didn't ditch").

「みんな来た？」 「うん、彼しか」 "Did everyone come?" "Yeah, except him."
(The above example is completely contrived.)

しか also occurs in grammar fossils where "inversion" is hard to define.

彼はいつしか行ってしまった He ended up leaving before anyone noticed.

しか is only used in negatively-polarized environments. The difference between しか and だけ in negatively-polarized statements is basically the primary reason that polarity exists in human languages.

Glad I'm not the only slow motherfucker here. I started in 2008, and there's probably people here who started a year ago and caught up with me already.

I never had an issue with methods, I figured out what worked really early. My problem is persistence. I could do short burst of really effective learning, then forget to keep going and suddenly realize after half a year that I've forgotten more than I've learned. Probably don't need to tell people here how sustained effort is much, much more important than hard work. Hard work just gets you an extra big queue of reviews when you eventually get to that day you're not feeling very motivated. When you just automatically put in the effort whether or not you're motivated, that's when the magic happens. Time just zooms by and suddenly you're fluent.

I'm still going to make it no matter what people say, but I'll never be able to feel pride about my progress.

Been learning for almost year now, read for at least 300+ hrs, recognize 2500 words or so and still when I tried to write in basic hiragana I still manage to forget half of them. Why is this?

Writing and reading are related but independent skills. Unless you're practicing writing semi-regularly it will be much harder to produce kanji and even kana that you would normally be able to recognize in an instant.
