Huh, Da Capo was knocked down by traps. Not too surprising considering how few trap titles there are, officially localized or otherwise.

Rance staying second is a bit surprising though since it's been 2 months since it was up for sale, if you include the preorder period. I think the trap game will have a decent tail because it represents a mostly untapped genre, but Rance rising to first again so soon seems plausible enough.

They do not release sale numbers. The best we have are estimations based on order number (not particularly useful for Rance because of a bundle shortly after release), and the annual charts (Rance was the 4th best seller on the main MG website last year, excluding bundles).

>>
>>16520585
Sales numbers are these days given by hard copies. If it sold well, hard copies appear.
>>
>>16520585
Being 4th last year when preorders only started in December means that it did fantastic. It almost certainly reached to quota for a hardcopy, the only question is when they'll announce it.

About a couple of weeks ago, Kouryuu mentioned that he was surprised Da Capo (if you included Steam sales) was almost the level of Rance sales. It's hard to guess because Steam Spy is inaccurate, and the bundle makes preorder numbers unhelpful, but I would guess Rance sold at least 2k by now.

A week or so out, it is hard to get much of a feel for how Seinarukana is doing on Steam. At the very least it doesn't seem to be some runaway success and it doesn't seem to be doing as well as Aselia did on Steam, but it also doesn't look like it complete disaster either.

Of course though, any Steam sales should complement respectable off Steam sales considering the reach of J-List's advertising and the long delay between the two releases.

It may seem that way to an amateur, but let me present the results in a different way:

That means 57 people want it changed - a majority. Thus option number 2 wins.

Another one of those podcast talk show deals with kouryuu. Mostly just an ad for DC3 with things people already know, but to roll off the list of items of interest at the end

1: Kuroinu Chapter 1 and Higurashi Chapter 5 "in March"
2: Following that "One title we haven't announced" (Aka, Secret Project 6, one of likely AB announcements)
3: Imopara 2 later this year
4: PE Fandisk "more of a summer release"
5: There'll be a sale near the end of this week (Aka probably the yearly valentines sale)

Also during the DC3 ad there was a bit about how that drama with aaeru hundreds of years ago actually forced mangagamer to license DC3 earlier than planned. Just a mild item of interest
>>
>>16537468
>Higurashi Chapter 5 "in March"
YES
>>
>>16537492

I wouldn't get too hyped. This is the first mention uptil now of them not being released in a bundle together, so they could still be debating it themselves. There's also this https://twitter.com/MangaGamer/status/829436235508756482
>>
>>16534634
Wouldn't they cut the content for Steam?
>>
>>16537468
Huh, I was expecting Bokuten to be next, if not the April title at latest but looks like that's not going to be the case.
>>
>>16537929
I believe Princess Maker 2 at least was released on Steam unchanged from the most recent Japanese PC release (although there was censorship for the Korean version). At the very least the nudity was not cut for the Steam release. The main thing to note about the Japanese release is the debug room from the DOS release was omitted in later releases.

I am guessing they will do the same here, with the release being based on the PC version of Princess Maker 1 Refine, and Steam shouldn't require them to censor that version.
>>
>>16539014
Bokuten is in the porting process still, which is always a wildcard about how long it takes.
>>
Fruitbat is teasing a "big" VN announcement. Although it is hard to guess what a big announcement from them might mean, as they have worked on some big titles (Eiyuu*Senki, Key translations), but much of their lineup is indie/doujin stuff.

>>
>>16539075
Thanks for WA 2, Fruitbat!
>>
>>16539075
I'm betting on Senmomo. It'll make waves while still not giving Eustia.
>>
>>16539075
Harukuru
>>
Pretty much any full length title and some short titles could be considered a big announcement, so not much to go on for now on the Fruitbat announcement other than big titles and titles from companies that have been eyeing the Western market.

With how it is worded, it doesn't even need to be a new announcement. Since they are also a console publisher, they could have grabbed a Steam title to put on Vita. They have a relationship with both Jast and MG, and both have titles that could benefit from a Vita release.
>>
>>16539075
> I'd be surprised if someone can guess it
That probably rules out every untranslated VN that's frequently demanded on the internet.
>>
>>16539050
The longest porting process i've ever seen, Bokuten speed is JAST-tier. It's like MG don't give a single fuck about it, i don't know why because the art is good and a lot of people like drama in VN. We don't care if the nips hated it.
I mean i'm more hyped for something like Bokuten then Pygmalion.
>>
>>16539075
Pretty sure it'll be something like Hakoniwa no Gakuen. A noname futur flop.

>>16539075

>>
>>16540401
>We don't care if the nips hated it.
We don't care care about Bokuten regardless of Nips opinion. Never see any hype about it anywhere.
>>
>>16540458
>Never see any hype about it anywhere.
That's because PR never talked about it, even on twitter. Like i said MG don't give a single fuck about it but i don't understand why they are shooting themselves in the foot with Bokuten.
>>
>>16540401
I doubt they have high expectations for Bokuten, even in the VN community it hasn't driven much discussion and it doesn't seem like a title that will do exceptional on Steam. Even the one selling point they managed to find, "look at the content we will get away with on Steam" is rendered moot by the large amount of uncut R18 patches competitors and that explicit OELVN that will likely have content more explict than "barely censored Bokuten" ends up being.
>>
>>16540456
There was that Twitter exchange last year in which the license person from Sekai approached the Seabed developer with an interest in the license, so unless Fruitbat approached first Sekai seems more likely to end up with it.
>>
>>16540475
That's just standard MG though. They don't hype something up until they have an official release date for it.

Works better than hyping something up and having it die down in the long wait for it.
>>
>>16540475
>That's because PR never talked about it

I wish some company, not Sekai specially, licensed most of doujin titles Hadler talks about, most of them sounds interesting
>>
>>16539075
A followup tweet said the announcement "should be coming within 24 hours."
>>
>>16540475
They had a PR plan for Bokuten, to take advantage of everything selling on Steam during the Steam craze and to aim for the press Kindred Spirits got for having sexual content on Steam.

Fast forward a year and while Steam will help it, it no longer will be enough to make it a success as the days of anything selling on Steam are long gone. It also has pretty much no chance of getting press unless MG somehow convinces Steam to carry it uncensored, which is very unlikely. Even if they did, the amount of press it could get would be less than Kindred Spirits, after other recent developments.

That leaves them to try to sell the title on the merits, which is made harder because the Steam audience won't notice at all. The title is also not an easy sell even to the audience that follows MG closely off of Steam.

I am laughing so much at the response Seabed more than likely wanted more money in order to toss their license to Sekai. But knowing Fruitbat they secured the deal in some roundabout way.

Newfag question, why do people do unnanounced/secret projects? You'd think they'd want to announce something early to let hype and word of mouth market the vn for them, if only a little.
>>
>>16545208
Official companies announce shit at cons.
Fans announce shit when there's actually something done. Plus there's always threat of C&D.

>>16545208
As for fantranslations, because they're doing it for free and could be dropped anytime they wanted. Also, C&D could happen.
As for company, becuase is stupid to announce something that isn't going to release in 1 or 2 years, Shit like Sekai's Baldr Sky announcement is some of the fucking worst because they didn't even knew about the limits of the partnership and how/when they're going to release it. To me, is better announce the project when is at least at 50% completion.
>>
>>16545208
1. The major VN companies are either bound to or like announcing releases during conventions, especially important ones.

2. Too much time between the announcement and the release will either cause people to be resentful or let the game be forgotten outright.
>>
>>16545208
The big question is why they announce unannounced games. That makes no sense as they are just saying "We are working". (Though for JAST that would be a good thing to mention now and then as nothing happens)
>>
>>16545262
It has been some time since AX/Otakon, and if the companies limited their updates to only announced titles, their updates would look less and less impressive as more announced projects finish up the translation portion of development.
>>
>>16545208

I can't speak for other people or companies, but on my end, I just added some secret projects to the MG status thing because updates were getting kind of short/boring with so many games out of TL/edit and in scripting which generally has nothing of note to report until it's done.
>>
>>16545262

What's life if you can't get hyped for announcements of announcements?
>>
>>16545208
Then you have a ton of people whining W Happiness when?
>>
>>16545250
Let the record show though that 2 years ago including the whole Baldr Sky thing Sekai announced projects that would be out a year later and only 2 of them made it and a lot are still untranslated or are vaporware at this point.
>>
>>16545405
Oh, I'm an expert at that. I'm hyped at announcements of announcements of games that will be sold digitally before they are sold in hard copies before they are on sale digitally and then ultimately on sale hard copies.

Man, those sale hard copies are the best. And you can sit and suck on that awesome wait for years!
>>
Does anyone have any ideas on what the unannounced projects could possibly be?

>>16547841
Steam greenlight stopped being free advertising when every game was bound to go through one way or another. I don't think this changes much.

>>16548796
Every VN company knows this, which is why they tend to focus more on nukige and moege for profit and simply do story games for the art more than for profit. Even moege didn't start becoming that profitable until recently.
>>
>>16547841
>Once set up, developers will pay a recoupable application fee for each new title they wish to distribute, which is intended to decrease the noise in the submission pipeline.
All they have to do is raise their Kickstarter goal by a few thousand and they can just pay their way in with any old shit that get backed.
>>
>>16549909
I doubt they are including moege as "story heavy", as they clearly have been investing a lot into that, seeing that it makes of the vast majority of their upcoming line up of full length titles. The only full length titles selling primarly on their story that that they grabbed recently have been Root Double and Baldr Sky, and the latter is a particularly high profile title that has gameplay. It's not like Gahkthun, Fata Morgana, Himawari, or Root Double have been huge successes, and no one has high expectations for Bokuten or Pygmalion. The main exceptions have been titles that are well known already, but it is hard to convince someone some unknown title has a good story that they should buy.
>>
>>16550188
Due to a successful Kickstarter Root Double should have at least broke even or even made a small profit for them. That is if they planned it right, but they did fuck up with things like the shirts so who knows what other things went wrong.
>>
>>16547841
It's not much of a lost since the publicity value of Steam Greenlight has been on the decline. Additionally, a higher barrier of entry onto Steam benefits Sekai, as it makes their role of a middleman more secured (since they will still be able to get their own titles onto Steam, and it makes it easier to get third parties to let Sekai be a publisher, especially with the doujin/indie titles Sekai targets), and it may reduce competition if the price barrier deters some of the cheap garbage that has been working its way onto Steam.
>>
>>16550217
Even if Root Double made a profit (and if it hasn't, the Vita release should push them over the line), it still would have been a lot of money up front without a significant return.

Additionally if Root Double, a well received, somewhat high profile title with a genre that has seen success in the West happened to struggle, it doesn't reflect well for other more unknown lower profile plot titles.
>>
>>16550188
Maitetsu is planned to be sold for the excellent train story. Unless they realize it is better to sell porn.
>>
>>16550780
They will still be primarily trying to sell it on Steam based on the art and characters the same way they would try to sell any of their other moege, regardless of if there is a patch or not. Additionally, something like Princess Evangile sold far more on Steam than on MG despite no patch being available.

Whether Maitetsu is successful at that or not is another question, but Sekai Project licensed it and much of of their moege lineup when they were giving Denpasoft the least attention.

Where did you get that rumor from? Ixrec quitting and Key deciding to commision Sekai wouldn't be too surprising, but I think it'll just be a one time translation fee and Key Visual Arts will get most of the profit. I suspect the same will happen with Fruitbat Factory and Little Busters.

>>16553590

>>16553587
Most people wouldn't notice minor consistency issues in a moege series. Even in a story heavy franchise, the average reader won't cause a fuss unless it's something as severe as inconsistent terminology.
>>
>>16553690
>>16553587
Yeah, and I've read VNs which had multiple writers up to like 6 for 6 individual routes, one each, and they made no effort to match tone/style/etc. Even if two translator styles are noticeably different, it's not a big deal, that kind of thing happens all over in VNs.
>>
>>16553537
>I think Kouryuu implied that the MG version of Da Capo III sold a bit more than the Steam version, but that may just be because Da Capo is one of MG's oldest franchises.

I think he only implied that the combined sales were rivaling that of Rance. Although regardless of the exact percent, I'm guessing Da Capo probably had among their highest ratio going through the main site of any of their decent sellers.
>>
>>16553808
https://curiouscat.me/Kouryuu/post/97800008?t=1486523028

He says there is a preference for the onsite version, which I would assume means its selling better then on Steam.
>>
>>16553808
>I think he only implied that the combined sales were rivaling that of Rance.

I wouldn't be so sure of that anymore either, since he said that back when it was rank 1, and since then it's fallen a lot lower. In comparison, rance seems to have basically made rank 2 it's permanent home.
>>
>>16553849
Should be a close to even ratio, but a bit in favor of the R18 version with how it is worded there.

>>16553866
Rance seems like it will have a stronger tail especially through the main website, but Da Capo 3 probably hasn't fallen back a ton yet just because it also is still going to be getting Steam sales as well which means it will be doing a bit better with weekly sales than the MG chart suggests.

Everyone knows about Eushully. MG and other localizers talked to them, Eushully said to fuck off and they aren't interested in western market.
MG also talked with SofthouseChara, another gameplay eroge dev, results aren't clear as there was rumor of some titles getting licensed but nothing came out of it so far.
