Ep 8 is shorter than a single Umineko episode.
You get the true sense that Ryukishi, after quitting his job to write full time after ep 4, really put as much energy as he could to write. Even if the ending of ep 8 feels a bit rushed.

Basically, throughout Higurashi, there are two Rikas at any given time. The template Rika, and a copy Rika.

The template Rika exists between the fragments, so we never truly meet her, but basically, at the star of every 'loop', the template Rika's 'soul' or whatever is copied into the native Rika of that fragment, overwriting it with her personality and (some of) her memories.

Once a copy Rika dies, all of her memories are copied back into the template Rika, and so she can be said to have 'lived through' that 'loop' despite it technically being a copy of her that did so.

Now, things go haywire once we get to the final 'loop', Matsuribayashi-hen. Because, you see, that's when the miracle finally happen, where Rika survives. Except, hold on, that's not "Rika" getting her wish granted, but "a Rika". See, that's the copy Rika who gets to experience that. The template Rika, the backup Rika, the Rika who remembers every single death she's ever experienced, SHE doesn't get to experience her survival, because the memories of a copy Rika only get uploaded into her when she dies, and the final Rika is unique because she was the only one who didn't die.

In fact, the template Rika realizes that it's IMPOSSIBLE for her to ever experience the miracle of her survival, since even if she did die, it would mean that she didn't survive. In a way, even though the miracle happened, it never did.

This, most of all, broke the template Rika and turned her into a witch. Remember, this is essentially the Minagoroshi-hen Rika, the Rika who finally had her hopes revived after having just about given up for a while now, the one who swore in her last moments to take down Takano no matter what, realising that her hopes and convictions were impossible to fulfill.

I'm not sure where Saikoroshi-hen stands in relation to the template Rika, since the copy never actually died (I'm thinking the template might have been a witch already at this point and witnessed it from the outside) but it's very important for the copy Rika and the origin of the template's new name.

Up to this point, both the template and the copies have thought of themselves as just 'Rika' but it's at this point that the final Rika acknowledges both the template and the copies created from it as being a distinct entity from the Rikas they replace, calling herself(es?) "Frederica Bernkastel". At the end, that's where Furude Rika and Frederica Bernkastel become two separate people, as the copy Rika resolves to live simply as "Rika". In contrast, the template doesn't, because it's realized the hopelessness of herself striving to be Furude Rika, and so becomes simply "Frederica Bernkastel".

At that point, Bernkastel, already jaded and untrusting, is mentored by self-admitted monster Featherine Augustus Aurora and is twisted even further into the complete bitch we know and love today.

My real intention last October was to actually reread Umineko, and at that time I had never bothered reading Higurashi or even watching/reading the manga or anime. I realized I was missing out (and dang was I ever Higu was great, I might actualy like it more now) but this was my main point of interest going into it, to take a break from Umineko (Specifically after episode 3 where Bern begins to take on a more central role) and figure out more of the meta behind the very complex overarching plot. I was an Umineko fan long before getting to Higu and I really just wanted to understand some people's origins (bern, lambda, etc crossover characters)

Do you think I should bother reading Rei before jumping back into Umineko with Ep 4? Am I really missing out on the full mccoy or can I just go cliffnotes and skip Rei?

The one bad thing about ryukishi games is that they're so long, and the only challenge presented to the player is to not get bored. there are rarely any choices or puzzles presented to the player and the player is rewarded solely for their attention.

I know some friends who watched the Higurashi anime. They mainly seemed interested in the gore though, not so much the story. I recommended the VN and Umineko, but they weren't interested.

I think the Higurashi anime is very well-known because it's unique and it has gore and bloody loli's. A lot of people have watched it. Most of them don't go on to read the VN or Umineko though.

After the massacre, she lost it because Ange accused her of being the culprit (due to Bern's suggestion, shown in Tsubasa) and Eva couldn't say anything because she'd reveal who really dunnit so she had to keep it bottled up supporting Ange while dealing with the media and mourning her dead husband and son.
I'm really warming up to Eva on my second read-through. I did not care for her at first.

It's a very delicate line to tread on though. Make her too intelligent and too smug and she becomes this walking joke of a character that is always right because of reasons and always looks down on people because they don't have plot-brain on their side.

Why I think Erika is so popular, is because she knows that she's the knowitall antagonist and makes full use of it by purposefully going full villain and doing ridiculous stunts like, listening to Battler breathe throughout the night. Furthermore she's not edgy as a lot of genius characters seem to be portrayed. And she fails, despite having great reasoning skills, she still fails at her job.

After completing some of the chores around the house, Kumasawa invited me to the parlor for a odd little story she seemed to have recalled as she told me. It was about a man from her past, a loosely-related in-law. The man whose name she couldn't recollect had apparently served in the war. He had been exposed to some horrifying brutalities whilst out there, and on his return, was never quite the same.

Some years later, as Kumasawa would have it, the former soldier was in his study with his wife, as was his routine to study along with his wife. On this warm summer day however, he had been struck with exhaustion and he dozed off quickly, falling in to a nightmare of his brother Japanese being slaughtered by the enemy forces. Even in the nightmare the poor soldier got no rest as he got caught and was forced to watch as his brothers in arms are killed one by one. In the dream he was about to meet the same fate, when his wife, realizing her husband was asleep, tapped him on the back on the neck to wake him up. The sudden shock overwhelmed his already stressed system, and he immediately dropped stone dead.

I must admit at first I thought it was quite an amazing story, but thinking about it for a second time, something seemed off. Maybe it was just Kumasawas trademark laugh.

In Search of Lost Time is about 1.5 million words and it was done in about 13 years. Ryukishi is just insane.

To be fair, it's a lot easier to produce text for visual novels than it is for actual literature. There's very little compression and no upper bound on length (compared to, say, a book or play).

Just consider how much useless text is contained in a visual novel. Ryukishi himself describes VNs as having 4 acts, which models a traditional 3-act structure but with an entire act dedicated to characters dicking around so you get to know them better (the "common route" you often find)

It is easier also considering there's a lot less density required for narration because of sprites. With the visual element added, the reader knows who's speaking at what time and where characters are in a scene, probably makes writing a lot easier.

i wonder if ryukishi's going with the generic "lol, kids and imaginary friends" pop culture thing or the deeper, more occultic origin of that called an egregore/tulpa.

A bit of hyperbole is involved for sure, but from personal experience I'd say that having things thrown at you during class and your schoolbooks thrown in the garbage, being singled out in group activities, being in a position of constant vulnerability, knowing that your classmates are just looking for some excuse to jump on you, being threatened and living in fear of those threats being acted upon (though there may never have been any substance to them) may be less visible to the outside observer than outright violence, but I don't think it makes much of a difference to a child.
It's the fear is what really gets to you, and the object of that fear is largely psychological. For me the most terrifying thing wasn't my own well-being, but the thought of my parents finding out and having their illusion that I was living a happy life destroyed, that they would think they had failed as parents for letting this happen to their child or that they would feel ashamed of me.

Kids are cruel and Higanbana shows the depths of that cruelty in a pretty realistic way.

It's first time reading through Chiru and holy shit this scene, it might have been my favourite scene in all of Umineko so far.

Ok I'm like half way through Meakashi and it seems to be proving the switcheroo theory about Watanagashi from the previous thread.

Even though there wasn't supposed to be a syringe in Onikakushi I'm starting to be convinced there was. In that same route K scratched his throat out after going nuts, right. Seems like the last stop after hearing footsteps and shit. And Tomitake dies the same way every chapter, by scratching his throat out. But we seem him hours before that acting totally normal!

So K was right, there's a magic crazy drug that makes you scratch your throat out. Probably delivered by Irie and Takano, who proceeds to fake her death for some reason. And then presumably destroy the village. I have no idea why though.

I was actually surprised when a friend of mine read Umineko and was more interested during Chiru than the first 4 chapters.
He wasn't interested in the mystery, but was more interested in the characters themselves, the backstory of Beatrice and her relationship with the rokkenjima island.
Needless to say we had several long arguments on fantasy vs mystery.

Damn, Meakashi was a pretty comprehensive solution to Watanagashi while also barely helping with the main mystery. There were bits of good info but a little more would've been nice. It's pretty hard to think it's solvable at this point.

Throat scratchy drug was pretty much confirmed here but used by Rika the Assassin nipah instead of the manager. Onikakushi K was right all along! Thus, in Watanagashi at least but probably others, the basic formula is; After the festival Tomitake gets drugged by Takano and offs himself, since they're always together, maybe with Irie too. She then drives out of town to go missing (seen by K in Tatarigoroshi), and then for some reason sets off a swamp death gas reaction from somewhere else (mentioned in Himatsubushi) with Irie and I have no idea. This doesn't get mentioned in the credits for Meakashi so I'm assuming Shion got the right person but Takano is still alive in that route at least. Very confusing. It at least fits with Mion/Shion/Whoever's statement that the Sonozaki's have nothing to do with the yearly curse (pretty hard to believe).

Speaking of Irie he needs to do more suspicious things because all I'm going on for him is unnatural behaviour from Onikakushi which better not be a hallucination. He would've taken the syringe and ripped out the Tomitake part of the note so hurry up and act evil already.

Only info I got for solving Tatarigoroshi was that Shion (the one with the hots for him) took the call from Satoshi and spoke to him, not Mion. The Mion from Tatarigoroshi was speaking as if she took the call so maybe a switch? Still have no idea about that clusterfuck.

Looking forward to evil eyes K in the Onikakushi solution.
