Touhou consists of shooting games, fighting games, manga and novels. It's distinctive in many ways, including art (good designs, badly drawn), gameplay (spell cards, etc.) and writing style (moral ambiguity used to instill feelings of peacefulness and nostalgia instead of darkness or seriousness).


However, it's in a weird situation: Despite being a doujin franchise, it has the highest fanfic/fancomic output of any franchise in Japan.

As a result, fanworks and memes are far more accessible to English-speakers than the original works, to the point where many self-professed Touhou fans (both on /jp/ and other places) know next to nothing about the series.
From browsing /jp/ you might think it was a yuri series, for instance, when the amount of romantic/sexual content in the series is actually close to zero (and the fanworks actually reflect this, but only a small portion of those get translated and the translators tend to be picky).

That wasn't my point, /jp/ does not "hate yuri", it's silly to think an entire board or even a wide majority of a board would all like or hate something, especially when there ARE yuri threads that pop up and generally keep to themselves (and a cast that's almost all female)

But the amount of het and fetish threads completely overwhelms that of any yuri content. If you glance around /jp/ you're just gonna think its a series about tummies and Meiling's tits and Tewi's ass
