Are you completely unaware of samurai?

>i thought Japan did not accept gays
Trap culture and fujoshits hit Japan hard.

Accept in a family/social sense, no they don't.
But if you're not related to the homo, or don't work with him, then it's none of your business. And in fact homosexuals are often seen as funny and amusing. There are many of them on Japanese television.
Japanese love homos.
Japan loves them as long as they're harmless comedic stereotypes. Camp, leather-and-chains, traps and crossdressers, etc.
Billy, Van-sama, Hard Gay, Cho Aniki, Matsuko Deluxe, Kayo Police and some other tarento, fujoshishit, etc. They've all seen some degree of acceptance in mainstream culture except for maybe fujoshishit since otaku are scum anyway.
Girls having closer-than-friendship experimental relationships while young with other girls is accepted. It also serves as wank fantasy, like lipstick lesbian fantasizing. Nothing further than that, though, as it's expected for you to drop that shit, find a man, and get married after that. It's seen as immature and not real, sort of like college experimentation/lesbianism as attention whoring here.
But like someone said, "real" gays and lesbians aren't as likely to accepted. Why this is, I don't know.
I suspect part of it is them subverting their role and not contributing to building up Japan aka marrying and raising a family the proper way like you're expected, but I'm just bullshitting here.
Albeit the world as a whole dislikes them, anyway. And a lot of Asian cultures really dislike them. Western acceptance is a fairly recent, odd thing compared to the rest of the world.
>how did he become a phenom
Accidental experimentation.

>Japan did not accept gays
wat
You seriously have to live behind the moon(US?) to think this. Even most TV shows are full of them.
