This anon wins most adorable name story I've ever read award.

So I imagine it goes a bit like this:

>okay noname-chan time to take the photos to sell on the internet
>hmm where can I get good photos oh how about the garden great idea
>*plop*

Order from suruga-ya arrived in the mail today. In it was doll necktie, 4 sets of eyes of the same color but in different sizes, and 6 fucking doll heads: 3 Obitsu 60cm eye drawing heads, 1 Obitsu 50-08 for drawn eyes, and the Parabox Megu and Hime Ane. What's astounding is they're mostly close to the same size. I was kind of expecting to see a more marked difference between the 60s and 50s to see if I could get a more notable bigheaded look on a 50cm body, but not quite. The exception is the Megu head which is notably smaller than every other 50 head and thus looks considerably smaller than a 60.

Lacking any Mr. Color matte spray, I'll be testing out some bottled Liquitex to see if that's suitable for face-ups. Some people online seem to think so, and it's supposedly UV colorfast. I'd mess with it today if not for the fact Hobby Lobby is overpriced except when you use their once a day 40% off coupon, so I'll be going again tomorrow for more supplies.

So I'm thinking of changing my doll's name. I've had her for over a year now, however I was extremely uncreative when I first got her and kept her original character's name. However, I feel she's changed enough to become mine in that year and a change of name is required to reflect that.

How late is too late to change a doll's name?

So I bought some doll care items from Twin Pines recently. Some remove-zit for stains, and some wig treatments and some guide books so I can maybe not completely fuck it up.

And then I left the package in the hands of the diversity quota at both USPS and AUSPost and they completely mangled the box and damaged the bottle of conditioner, which then leaked through the package and destroyed the booklets I paid nearly US$50 for.

>>16079617

I watched mine fall over and faceplant the glass pane of her dungeon. That's about it.
>>
>>16079834
>Twin Pines remove-zit
That stuff is miserable. The surface remains tacky far too long after you try to wash the residue off and the toxic smell takes months to disappear. Heavy washing and solvents don't help, it's almost like it makes a permanent change to the vinyl. And if you use it on legs (like you would after getting stains from socks) it makes socks harder to slide on and you'll probably end up stretching them out. That's my experience anyway. Let us know how it turns out for you.

You should write the manufacturer. Whenever i order things that could leak like paints/thinners/hot sauces, they pack the bottles/jars/etc in bags and twist them sealed. No it may still not survive but it could have saved the rest of your order from being damaged.
>>
>>16082488

I already have, pretty much as soon as I opened it. But they have yet to reply.

Something with my paypal went wrong and I couldn't participate in a once in a lifetime bargain auction for a doll... now I feel like complete shit and want to compensate by making a wholly unreasonable purchase. Any suggestions on how to overcome these dumb urges and get back out of a slump?

Today is no good in general I suppose. Thread's also been stagnating again.
>>
>>16085503
If you do any creative skills, put some time into that to focus on and clear your head. I've been sewing all day, this outfit should be done by tomorrow or so.

In general with impulse buys, if they're not time-sensitive then try to give yourself a week or so before you buy the thing where you don't look at it at all, put it out of your mind, and when you go back to it a week later see if it's still as exciting as it was at first glance.
>>
>>16085769
I've been working on some Christmas ornaments and other related presents (a bit ahead of time, but I took on way too much work and wouldn't be done on time otherwise). It does help but there's this underlying feeling of disappointment. But oh well.
Solid advice though. And it helps to read something reasonable in that state of mind.

What've you been sewing? Any chance we'll get to see it?
>>
>>16085892
I get antsy about crossposting my stuff here and on forums with a name attached, sorry bro :( It's a sailor uniform, not much fancier than that, but my track history with trying to make one has been pretty lousy and I think I'm getting the hang of it by now. Putting the snaps on the back, gotta hem the sleeves, attach the modesty panel, and one or two little tweaks and I should be all done.

Not applicable for everyone but trying to make one for yourself is another way to stave off impulse buys, haha. Whether or not the quality holds up is a matter of practice.
>>
>>16086014
That's ok. I never post my own stuff either, so I can't hold that against you. Still nice that someone's into creating stuff themselves, keep it up. Wish I had time to get into sewing, it seems like one of the more useful skills to have.
>>
>>16085769
>>16085892
Holy shit the waiting thing is so fucking important. And yah there is disappointment but often it will pass. I am living with both sides right now. On one hand I bought Miku and I would rather have that money now then her. And thus she lives in her box still wrapped in plastic. On the other hand my Forgeworld account suffered a password issue and for 4 days I could not log in and buy a $500 tank that in the end I don't really need. And that was disappointing for a bit when I could buy it but didn't because I realized I am better off without it.

Also post your stuff you two I wanna see it!
>>
>>16086419
related, I will promise you this: I decided a couple days ago that the Ribbon Girl set isn't actually $250+ good so I'm gonna buy third party Miku-colored wigs instead and make a hoodie and skirt in a similar style myself, because like that's fine with me and also $100+ cheaper. So when that comes together I'll post it here for you guys, probably like end of the yearish after I recoup from other big spending

I doubt I'll ever get fully over it, since it was a 60k yen (+ tax) doll I've been wanting for a year that I could've gotten for 27k. But I do admit that having the option to wait and rationalize a purchase to make sure you really want to pull that trigger is a welcome luxury.
I don't think you should regard Miku as a burden though. Worst case scenario you can always flip her for a profit. Even though I'm sure if you gave her a chance and released her from the Miku character cage by personalizing and playing around with her, you'd learn to like her a lot.
Wow, I didn't realize Warhammer got so expensive since I left the hobby almost a decade ago.

I'm currently working on equipping my girls for winter. I'll try to take photos which are neutral enough for me to not be afraid of posting.

>>16086474
Can't wait to see what you'll make! I think the Ribbon Girl set is amazing, possibly one of the best Miku sets, but that price is absolutely overblown and unreasonable, so you made the right choice. Unless you can snag it cheap at some point, it really isn't worth it.

>>16090039
What a cutie, I like that the hair-clips match the color of the dress pattern. btw I have that same Schleich bunny. I wasn't aware that people here still had those.
When the joints are prominent/bent. It's best to have socks that are either thigh high, or a bit further down the calf. When it ends right under the knee, it makes the joint appear more prominent.
But I probably shouldn't be giving advice, considering my severe lack of any socks (I keep telling myself I'll make them myself....

>>
>>16092104
Thank you. The dress and clips match her pony, too. I sort of liked her spooky knees, plus I haven't had time to make or buy any new socks.

I love Shleich figures. I have some horses and a calf and a few others, as well. The bunny suits her scale, I think.

>>
I was wondering, would anyone happen to know about the size differences if any between DDS and DD as far as body parts go? Almost wanna do a face up with a Mirai head and put that on a Mayu body? Is there any difference?
>>
>>16094915
Yes, there's a difference and it's pretty obvious if you see a DD3 and DDS body side by side. The DDS arms and legs are noticeably shorter and the torso is more slender. However if, say, you traded a DD3 body for a DDS body and didn't have both to compare at the same time then it wouldn't be super obvious so swapping heads is generally fine. Most clothes will fit both, in fact Volks doesn't make DDS only outfits (with the possible exception of default outfits).
>>
>>16094915
>>16094949
Also the skin tone of Mirai is Semi White. The Mayu DDS body is normal. That said you can buy a Semi White DDS body without a head.

As for how it will look? Probably great but then I am biased to the DDS. But yah the body's are not extremely different overall.

Ah thanks. Yeah I do wanna get something going soon face wise for my girl but I... want a more neutral expression if that makes any sense. I just feel like DDH04's are stuck in that smile expression, which is lovely and all, but eh. Maybe Ill hold off and just get some new eyes and see if that changes perspective any. Thanks. I shuffled between Mirai and Mayu for a while, but settled on Mayu. Maybe I'll do some bust switches as well and see where I feel then.
>>
>>16094977
Mirai and Mayu Are both super cute no wrong choice in my opinion. As for eyes I have to recommend Lizanna. Sadly the site says closed until 2017 but my Lizanna eyes are by far my favourite. If you are not in a rush maybe wait for that. Or I am sure others could have eye ideas.

I don't really have an interest in playing dress up with one right now so I should probably ask.

Can I just buy a dolfie dream doll and keep it in a case with regular anime figures or am I expected to do some sort of maintenance?

Don't want to blow a few hundred on one and then mess it up with improper care. Only thinking of this now after seeing that there are proper ways to clean these things. Not sure if you need to do it regularly or something so they don't degrade over time.

>>16101292

I... guess you could do that.

But a majority of the enjoyment of a miniature daughter is playing with her. Damage and wear happens as a result of that and whilst minimising it is important, worrying too much about it is unnecessary.

Besides, how can you peek up her skirt if she's standing in a cabinet?

In unrelated news, Twin Pines have gotten back to me about the fucked up delivery. I'm hoping to get the damaged items replaced at a good discount if not for free.
>>
>>16101292
>Don't want to blow a few hundred on one and then mess it up

then blow a few hundred and don't do anything with it.
>>
>>16101292
Yes, you can totally do that, that's how I started out. A few of things worth mentioning though:

Vinyl will yellow (faster) if exposed to direct sunlight.

If she falls over you might need to straighten out and/or comb the wig but be careful if it has an ahoge. I recommend buying a doll stand to avoid such issues in the first place.

Vinyl dolls are susceptible to staining from cloth dyes but if you just plan to have her wear the same default outfit all the time then you don't really have to worry but it will affect the resale value. A body suit will prevent most stains but doesn't always look good if the outfit is on the skimpy side.
>>
>>16101292

Yes.
Just no dark clothes that could stain.
Get a stand for insurance; cheap ones in hobby stores like Hobby Lobby do good enough. They're like $5.
Also might have to comb/style her wig every few weeks, which you could probably make routine with fig dusting.

She will dwarf all your figures though, standing at 60cm.
>>
>>16101441
I'll probably dress one up later, just not ready for that much of an investment right now.

>>16103753
Wouldn't dark clothes be better for stains?
Not really sure how I would stain it anyways, it would be in the case the entire time.
>>
>>16103855
Check it! Your future girl is like a... I tryed really hard to find a funny and effective Analogy but failed.

Vinyl is like a sponge and will absorb the dye from clothes. The darker, tighter, warmer, and/or most the clothes are the more likely they will stain.

You can avoid this by using lighter clothes, washing them to remove extra dye and by putting her into a body suit that keeps fabric away from her.
>>
>>16103901
Ah wasn't even thinking the vinyl could get stained. I thought you meant the clothes getting stains. Thanks for the heads up
>>
>>16104014

>>16104014

Vinyl is a dye slut. Just can't get enough of dark colours. Black, blue, green, and red too. It'll suck off any fabric it can.

I have enough spare body parts to make a stain body. When I'm leaving Kagura in her office uniform, she is on her stain body because it's all black. Then if she needs to change into something more comfortable I pop her head off and put it on the clean body. Her office outfit is my favourite of her clothing so she spends a lot of time in it, hence the need for a body that can be disregarded.

Pic related is what black overknee socks can do.
>>
>>16104791
I bought a pair of the black thigh highs from Volks. She had them on for about 10 minutes while I took some pictures and when I took them off she was already stained. Never again. I'm sure it was probably my fault for not pre-washing them or something, but still.

Yeah, never trust dark stockings without washing them first. If you catch the stain very quickly like this, it may come off pretty easy with just a damp cloth or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser rather than needing to do crazy zit cream treatments. I've had pretty good results making clothes stain-free following this tutorial, I also throw a color catcher sheet in the machine

Hmmmm, well, I would like to think it has alot to do with how much effort, money, and thought most owners put into their girls. An attempt to not let them be just a 1000 dollar doll sitting on someones shelf. Even going along with naming, personality traits, its only natural to refer to them as a girl or daughter at that point.
>>
>>16115244
well I mean when you spend hundreds of dollars on a thing and a fair amount of time dressing it up and customizing it to your liking, you're gonna grow a little bit more attached than "this is my inanimate object I keep it on the desk", using regular pronouns the same way you do with animals doesn't seem too unusual

that said when people call their dolls, and refer to other people's dolls as, daughters and shit it wigs me out, like nah man keep your daddy shit to yourself
>>
>>16115244
Because once they get a name and a personality they feel like they are more then just dolls. They feel special so I call them girls. Some people say daughters but that's a bridge too far for me.

So quick question, I'm looking at buying my first BJD. Hesitating between SD or DD. I'll be in Japan next month so I'll be buying it there.

I travel a lot so goal would be to travel a lot with my doll.

From what I've read Resin are heavy, how heavy are we talking for a SD13~? Would getting a DD a better choice for someone moving around a lot? (We're talking 10~ long haul flights a year minimum.)
>>
>>16117529
no.
>>
>>16118032
What criteria are you targeting? weight? space? Durability?
>>
>>16118381
Weight would be important, then how fragile/easy to transport she is. Durability would come third as she would be outside quite often.

How do you take the plane with you dolls usually? As carry on or do you put her in the hold?
>>
>>16118230
Such a blunt answer.

Get an MDD or DDS then. SD dolls are too heavy, tend to chip and it's harder to replace parts if something breaks. Just make sure the doll is dressed in light colors during travel to avoid staining.
>>
>>16118032
In terms of weight,
SD are 2-3 times heavier than DD given roughly the same height.

An estimate of a typical DD weight is 2.5 lbs.
An estimate of a typical SD weight is 5 lbs.

If you bring DD or SD around with you, buy a carry bag designed for dolls.
It protects the doll wig, clothes, staining, face, make up, etc
>>
>>16118032
> (We're talking 10~ long haul flights a year minimum.)
>>16118461
As carry on or do you put her in the hold?

Basically what >>16118769

SD are heavier, resin material. It can chip.
If you dropped a DD and a SD together, both would sustain damage. But, the SD would probably take more damage. SD being heavier can also fall over and sustain damage.

Traveling often means you will be throwing the doll around whether it is a carry-on or put into the hold. A DD would sustain less damage than a SD.

You do know that SD or a DD should be disassembled when packed for traveling, right?

DD is easily disassembled. SD requires some simple tools to disassemble.

Wig, head, body should all be stored separately. Head needs to go in a small plastic box by itself with minimal rattling.
1) Wig hair fibers can get all tangled up.
2) Head/make-up can get scratched.
3) body joints can snap and break.

Both. I used to worry about searching or the x-ray tech giving you weird looks but after it happens a couple times you get used to it and have fewer fucks to give. Of course, if you're worried about checked luggage being thrown about by imbeciles, carry on.

Between SD and DD: like others have already said, a vinyl doll is more durable and weighs less than resin. MDD is very bag friendly. Fits in backpacks and along the long edge of a carry-on compliant suitcase.

and, if you're *really* space-conscious, a Parabox (Obitsu) 40cm (MDD height) folds 180 degrees at the knees, taking several cm off the length at nearly no cost of the thickness resulting in something roughly the size of a 1 liter bottle and can fit in the corner of a camera bag.

There's a small caveat to that. The 40cm body is more or less a shortened 50cm body. So the hip and torso proportions are a little thicker. MDD clothes may be tight depending on the outfit. Put 50cm clothes on them and they amusingly fill a gap between MDD and 50cm.

Actually I wasn't sure if that was a requirement or not, I was just planning to get one of these doll transport bag, put her in side and carry her with me as carry on. Wouldn't that work (I mean beside the dimension of the bag itself, which wouldn't be a problem unless I fly economy).

Disassembling your doll everywhere you go is a bit on the eccentric side. If carry-on size is not an issue, the doll bag will do the job.

Regarding tangled hair, you're guaranteed to do a minimum amount of styling whether or not you remove the wig, probably more if you do. Depending on the hairstyle, covering her head or upper body with a plastic bag before putting your doll in the case will minimize any un-styling that occurs.
>>
>>16120743
>I wouldn't really care about search/X-ray but more about luggage being mishandled.
If my Whisky bottles survive you have nothing to worry about with a doll. Pack her securely and avoid obvious pitfalls like folding her in half or packing loose objects around her face.

> I had weirder things with me when travelling.

>>

All right thanks and I was planning to get one of these bag yeah. Even if they're 70cm tall they should just fit into 56x45x25 box at airport when placed diagonally. (56x45 diagonal would be 72cm). Worse comes to worse the doll should fit into a standard carry-on when placed diagonally. (~60cm diagonal will fit without issue).

Having a single doll among other piece of luggage wouldn't be that weird I'd say.

I travel mainly between my company offices and for game conventions/tradeshows (as exhibitor). I often carry samples or prototypes with me which are valuable because made in very low quantity so we don't always Fedex them. And when you're ~30 y/o and half your luggage consist out of plushies or random game merch it looks just as bad as having a single doll among normal belongings.

Definitely overthinking it. The person operating the x-ray is used to peering into people's personal lives so toys and especially promotional materials aren't going to raise an eyebrow. Grown man with a doll might, but they're focused on violations like drugs, explosives or bottles of water that weren't purchased for $6 past that point.

It is doubtful you could find a DD sized girl at that price that is not garbage due to construction or damage. Plus add on tan something somewhat rare among this scale of doll. Event is 11-5 but of course if you're just there to shop/browse you don't have to be there all day. How late is your flight? Leave the event ~4 hours before takeoff and you could comfortably make your flight (~1.5-2.5 hours to Narita from Big Sight leaves ~2.5-1.5 hours for checkin and processing) FWIW it never takes more than an hour to get to the gate once you arrive at the terminal.

My flight's at 6 so I should leave around 2. Got it. I'm mostly interested in the dealer's room and general browsing so timed events are not important. However, I'm travelling with someone else who is not interested in dolls. They might be interested in looking around Hobby Round though. In that case, we each need a general admission ticket. Are the guidebooks truly optional? I think I would buy one anyway to get into Dolls Party as early as possible, but would I be able to later duck into Hobby Round without a guidebook? (Dollfiedreams posts made it sound like I need an appropriate guidebook for entrance into the events, but... IDK.)
>>
>>16130217
Haven't been myself but If it's anything like idoll/marche they'll be in the same hall and one ticket gets you into both events. if you're looking for a specific vendor the guidebook helps. If you don't know any vendors just browse.

Forgot to add the guidebook serves as proof of entry for some events. Dollshow for example does this.

Buy an ultra light/foamy air drying modelling putty in white. It won't scratch the vinyl and you can sculpt it better than bunched up paper. Plus it'll be sorta squishy when dry, which might make poking more fun?

>>16119341
>>16120743
You're more likely to break a vinyl doll if you keep disassembling it. As long as you have an appropriate bag for it and don't throw it around like it's a football it should be fine.
I would suggest you try and fit it inside your suitcase if it is sturdy. Carry-on can be a bit of a hassle and isn't worth it unless you want to play with her or take pictures during the flight.

I'd also suggest a cute and short wig, it'll make maintenance that much easier. Or get a wig with those clip-on ponytails.

I'm not an expert on resin bjds, but I found a post with a whole list of companies that make tan skinned dolls http://ladytemeraire.tumblr.com/post/71375461430/dark-skinned-bjd-masterpost

The only official tan skinned vinyl dolls are some of the Smart Dolls.

Though I doubt you'll find anything within a $200 price-range
Even headless DD/smart doll body in the shittiest of conditions tend to go for that much or more.
You could try getting a used Obitsu body and 40-05 head and then try tanning them yourself. But without a lot of experience the result might not be to your liking.

I'm leaning heavily towards Miku. Gonna run me a lot but she looks too cute to pass up.

Hopefully I'll be able to buy her sometime after Christmas. Just dropped all my savings into a new computer so I need to wait until I can build them up a bit more to be safe.

If I can't find a reasonable deal on her though I'm just going to go with a standard model. Most likely pic related.

Depending on which version you prefer, this is about the cheapest you can get Miku:
https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1051394941
https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1044693818
If you're lucky you can get one for less on Y!Japan sometimes.

Mirai is considerably cheaper.
https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1050535277
I have her and she's absolutely adorable. Imo the face-up looks more refined than either Miku ver.
But keep in mind, the head is a tad smaller than most of the newer head-sculpts. I wish I had a spare SW DDS body to see if she'd look even cuter as a slightly shorter girl.

Depends on how you see your dolls. If they're objects to you then no 'cause it's more like having a favorite shirt or whatever. But if you've given them personalities etc.... then it might be a tiny bit wrong.

And if it goes beyond playing favorites and you notice you stopped liking a doll - despite a wig/style/eye change - sell them. Use that money to spoil the ones you favor or save up for a new one.

It's the worst if you have to keep seeing the doll and be reminded of your failure.

I know that two of my Dolls sit above the others as my favourites. But I don't hate any of them... well I hated one of them but she is great now.
>>
>>16134039
Well, it's a decision that nobody can make for you. If it feels like the doll is a burden or just doesn't fit in and you don't find any joy in her anymore, then it is justified. Give someone else the chance to appreciate her again.
It seems a bit pointless to keep them around for sentimental reasons alone or because you can't make any profit/money back.

>>16134332
That's another way to go - work on a doll until it's to your liking. Not many feel like putting in the necessary effort and funds though so there's nothing wrong with passing it on. The worst one can do is letting anything stagnate.

I'm currently in a really crappy self-imposed position, where I have too many near-future purchases planned/incoming orders but already own enough dolls that need to be taken care of. Now I'm thinking about selling at least some of my floating heads, though I can't decide which ones to let go.
Should also sell a complete doll but I love all of them too much.
>>
>>16134686
Floating heads are a bad time. They are no girl but they are also every girl. Just a ball of pure possibilities. And they don't cost too much so it's easy to pick up the cute ones. But then you feel bad because they need body's and then clothes plus space to display them.
>>

I can absolutely relate to this, though my incoming orders are a year or so away (Anastasia/Iori preorders). I already have a few of mine in storage due to not having enough room. But I'm not sure I can bring myself to sell any of them.

Two of them listed there are in Tokyo. Also not everything in stores is online. You should go to the Nakano store first because it is the biggest. Also there is the one in akihabara. Last year when I was there both locations had a Mirai and Volks Dollpoint was sold out.
>>

Got the link? I searched using "DD 未来 スタンダード" couldn't find any in Tokyo (listed as sold out).

I'll definitely check all Mandarake location anyway before heading to Volks.

Also! I removed my SIM card so I don't have to pay for any calls or texts I might have received. I also rented a WiFi hotspot to carry around BUT!

Download "maps.me" from your App Store now. Then zoom out and zoom into Tokyo and Download that map. It works offline and even with my SIM Card removed it was still able to show my location and the direction I was moving. You can also Mark locations you want to visit now or if you are out and about you can place them.
I can't stress enough how important this app was to my enjoyment of the trip I never worried about getting lost so I could wonder about freely. I could find stores easily and I would not have to wait for anything to load. I am not jokeing download this now and start using it in your home city to get a feel for it. Depends on what kind of doll you're making, what style you're going for and the budget you're working with. Is it a YoSD or more like a fashion doll 1/6 scale?
Search terms are basically what you typed plus "doll" or "bjd"
You can find some cheap eyes and wigs in that size on ebay or aliexpress. Quality may vary.

Then there are more specified stores. In my search these ones popped up first (seem alright if you live in the USA I guess):

Right!? And I even switch them out every now and then so I don't even have an excuse like, oh they're just buried in some box so I no harm done if get rid of them...

On the subject of heads. I need some help if anyone can offer any:
I have two DDH heads which I got for 20 bucks each. They're not stained/yellowed and the face-up even looks good.
But they have some shiny spots (not noticeable in pictures, so I don't even know how to show it). It is almost like marbling - similar to how it appears on resin dolls. I'm assuming something happened with the sealant, either wasn't applied evenly or got old, etc.
Is there any way to remove those spots without damaging the face-up? Any recommended chemicals/materials? I already tried rubbing alcohol and a vinyl eraser without much luck.
And is it possible to remove those at all, in case I did decide to just redo the face-up myself?

>>16136824
Yeah, display space is also slowly becoming a problem. And you always have to be careful not to go into weirdo territory of numbers displayed/sitting around the room. I'm assuming anything above five dolls in varying sizes is too much for normal visitors to handle.
It also gets pretty warm in my apartment during the summer so I'm forced to migrate most of them to the basement every year.

How many dolls do you have displayed and how many in storage? And do you switch them out? It's always sad when ambitions exceed the limitations of life.

>marbling
without seeing it for ourselves, i can only think of two possibilities:
1. exposed vinyl under a thick faceup and you're seeing a transition between those layers
2. manufacturing defect where the vinyl wasn't completely mixed and you're seeing two material densities clash
in either case it's unfixable without concealing (by paint/refacing or clothes) or ignoring.
>>
>>16138155
Why are more people not doing this I am curious. As for me.

Cake - First I ever got.
Waffles - Second I got but these threads played a major role in that.
Pumpkin - resin head on Obitsu body
Tofu - Bought in Tokyo
Cherry
Maple syrup - Tan Smart Doll
Cookie
Strawberry
Snow Miku - still warming her box.

As an added bonus it also reads like a grocery list.
>>
>>16138646
Ok, I may have used the term marbling wrong, because it looks nothing like in that picture.
It's definitely not the vinyl itself. The shiny spots are on the surface, as if the sealant just wasn't great quality or something along those lines. those spots are also not in any parts where the makeup is. so it's not exposed vinyl either.
Visually like glossy coating was used instead of matte (but obviously that's not the case cause the spots are random, that's just what it looks like)
I'll try to get some better lighting going and take out a real camera, maybe then it'll be visible in pictures.

Orange peel texture perhaps? It's a painting phenomenon which occurs when the medium is not thin enough and resembles a bumpy surface when it dries. A common problem if you use paints or sealers from spraycans and don't apply using the correct conditions (distance/temperature/humidity/too much/etc.)
>>
>>16138604

It's a spot where the sealant chipped. Just seal them over again, or totally remove the faceup.

I tried my best to make the spots visible, under normal circumstances they're quite difficult to see.
I know you're not supposed to use alcohol but I had nothing else at hand at the time and if it didn't work I'd have to redo the face-up anyway. So no harm done either way.
Now if there's no other way around it, what would you suggest I should use to remove everything and clean the head for a new paint-job?
>>
>>16139606
looks like it's either chipped or the shiny spots were created by impact.

If you want to experiment: try Mr clean magic eraser to take away the shine but be careful since it's an abrasive.

If you were going to strip the head anyway: acetone/nail polish remover.

>pop!
>head comes clean off
>she now regrets her decision but it is too late for regret
>set the decapitated head down on the table
>doll gets to watch her former body get stripped naked with no regard for shame or modesty (which she should have thought about before doing something so shameful and immodest) and then completely ripped apart

Maybe if she's lucky she'll live long enough to see her body be put to good use on another doll. Otherwise she gets thrown into the black box of disrespectful floating heads where she'll spend the rest of her life until I decide her eyes are needed elsewhere. Then she'll come out of the box just long enough for them to be gouged out of her skull.

Parabox. It's in their 40-45cm girl range. The arm length on a 40cm is just a little bit too long and it's so adorable. He looks like a girl waiting to grow up into her uniform.

They also sell a couple hoodies. Kagura has one. I've posted this photo before and it's not very good but here she is. I think she wears it quite well for a twenty-something government office lady.

40-45cm stuff is typically compatible with MDD however this may not be true for every possible garment.

No the top is all white. And the skirt had this mesh that holds the skirt away and makes it look fluffy. The top of the skirt is black but as you can see in this image the top goes down far enough to form a barrier.

I thought they were styled after Mei from Another?
>>

>the skirt had this mesh that holds the skirt away and makes it look fluffy
petticoat. the term you're looking for is petticoat, and is a wonderful enhancement that comes with many a Volks outfit.
>>
>>16157088

That is correct. Partially because the girl _is_ Mei from Another, but correct nonetheless.

It should also be noted Mei's original eye traits were probably lifted directly from Rozen Maiden anyway considering Another's fascination with ball-jointed dolls.

I've done this, sort of. I was moving and had piled several jumbled doll parts (wrapped individually) into my suitcase with my other valuables, because I don't trust the mail here for shit nor did I trust my family to package them properly. Several were resins with magnetic parts, which I guess looked weird on the xray. Had to have my suitcase opened, one of the packages slit and unwrapped. Happened to be my DDdy girls torso, so they saw the nips and just kind of set it right back down. The scary part is actually that they're the ones handling it, you aren't allowed to touch at all and have to stand back, I suppose in case its a bomb you could detonate.

are Mandarake wigs usually garbage or are they okay sometimes?

I've had good luck with ordering outfits from them so far but I just got a wig I'd been really excited for and the color is drastically different from the website photos, the twin tails aren't detachable like the description says they are, and the size is like, really fucking small (I ordered "L" 9-9.5 inch which should be big enough for DD in my experience) and the bangs are crazy thin

I have a Monique wig that's made of crazy nice fibers but it's put together really horribly and this wig is the same, only the fibers are like pretty average and already all tangled. can't believe I shelled out for EMS on this, what a waste
>>
There is nothing about smartdolls in the guide, or I am just blind.

But what is the general consensus regarding them?
>>
>>16161400
Guide predates Smartdoll and is rumored to be under revision.

From the last couple threads it seems they're lacking and Danny Choo don't deserve money.
>>
>>16158664
It's just a week away. I know I'm dressing up my girls next weekend.

>>16161170
Mandarake sells their own wig brand, Himekazura, in addition to preowned wigs from other brands. What wig did you get? I've not owned Mandarake branded wigs but I hear they're decent.

While this is generally true I am interested in seeing owner pics of Kurenai when she's finalized and shipped out. But I fully expect to be disappointed.
>>
>>16161702
Mind sharing any expanded thoughts on how they compare to Dollfie Dreams? All I know about them is they have a hole in the small of their back where you give Danny more money for stands but don't know what other tweaks/shortfalls they have
>>
>>16161789
Well first she comes with the rod stand. Plus hole and included stand are great in my opinion. Also the vinyl is nice with even colour. The clothing is expensive but nice. Same with the wig they are great but don't fit on any of my DDs.
Problems are the internal skeleton feels very flimsy also the face sculpt is very flat that's why she has glasses to add depth.
Middle things are stuff like the hands are very soft and rubbery. Feet looks a little off. And I don't super like torso joint directly below the bust.
>>
>>16161789
>>16161850
I'll share my opinion as well, I own a Cheetos.

The sculpt is indeed flat and can look strange from certain angles. Vinyl feels thin and brittle compared to Volks dolls, except for the bust which is quite soft. The knees won't bend more than 90 degrees. The wigs are better than most Volks wigs and will indeed not fit the bigger DD heads though they can fit smaller heads, my Lily is currently wearing the short version of Chitoses wig. Clothes are really nice if you're into the casual look, the only reason I still actively check up on what Choo is doing is to see if there's any new clothes he's making.
>>
>>16162275
>see if there's any new clothes he's making
What do you think of his clothes? They always seemed hipster to me. Unless he makes something frilly when I'm not looking?

this one
https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1043847635&ref=list

the photos make it look like a bold light pink but in person it's a mixed pink (fuchsia/hot pink) that reads a lot more red-pink than I wanted. it arrived just around sundown though, it might look better in natural light so I'll put it on my Miku again tomorrow & take pics

Quality is among the best I've seen. It used to be hard to get a nice pair of jeans that would fit the DD3 body nicely. Now it's easy, although not cheap. Besides that, some of his sweaters and shirts are pretty good.

>>

It may or may not have fallen out of the socket and I didn't feel like prying her head open to fix it.
>>
>>16163146
Ha ha sweet.
Back before Cookie became the witch she is now I bought a wig that covers one eye. I planned on getting two different eyes in the same style but one washed out and pale. That never panned out though.
>>
>>16161170
I got two Himekazura wigs and they're both nicer than any of the original Volks ones I own.
Maybe you were just unlucky with this one. Mine are M and L size and both fit on all my girls.
Another problem is that Mandarake takes really garbage pictures most/sometimes because they have to process so many items daily.

>>16162828

I'll post some of my girls too later today if I don't pussy out again.

Loving the eyes on both! And the eye-patch is unconventionally cute. You could try drawing like a bunny/kitten head (or tiny sticker) on it. But maybe that wouldn't suit her character

Despite the shitty head sculpt/face-up and all complaints I heard about Smart Dolls I decided to get an Eiji (not at full price, thankfully) because the DDS boy will otherwise drown among my girls.

Until he arrives, here's what I've seen while doing research:
Danny Choo has somehow built up a specific diehard following because he's so accessible and communicative. That group of people would probably buy an overpriced piece of vinyl turd from him and still praise it.
Even though he's got the possibility to make unique dolls, with nobody holding him back, he still chooses to have generic and seemingly unfinished/unrefined sculpts with very little personality or detail and sells the same heads as different characters, just in other skin tones. I find that a bit lazy.
But on the other hand his company is the only one offering more varied colors, so he's got that going for him.

I wouldn't give Danny Choo my money until he decides to pony up and tries harder.
>>

I feel 100% the same way. I hope they try harder someday.
>>

>>
>>16165046
>But maybe that wouldn't suit her character

Well one of her siblings might vandalise her eye patch while she's asleep or something I guess. She's a bit too boyish to do it on her own.

She'd spend the entire day out in public and people'd be looking at her strange and she'd get self-conscious about it, come home, see herself in the mirror and then tear the house apart looking for the perpetrator which would be very difficult because there would be multiple suspects who would all substantiate each other's alibis.

Until I can buy a body suit for her, I'm keeping her in the white memorial edition dress she came with. I don't wanna take any chances, considering her wardrobe will probably be made up of rich/dark colors.

Christ.
>>
>>16168581
You can always make an attempt (twin pines, zit cream, sunlamps, etc) but in the end it's simpler and much less stressful to replace body parts or live with the stains. honestly it's not really a problem unless your dolls are primarily displayed in swimwear or underwear. The stains happened under clothes and thats where they stay.
>>
>>16168581
Buy new body for exposed body parts/revealing clothes
Use old body for stain testing or wearing dark/suspicious clothes
Then you're a floating head away from having another doll.
>>
Checked the guide, the aftermarket section is pretty barebones.

Anything I should know about buying used? Things to look out for?
>>
>>16172563
Unless you're confident in the listing or the presentation is straightforward, full disclosure is your friend. Any part of the doll body that isn't pictured? Any color shift in the vinyl? Can the seller certify the frame isn't broken? is the faceup damaged? Is the wig still good? Was it stored improperly? What is important to you?
>>
>>16172563
>>16172683
All good questions to ask. Also, be sure to ask if it was ever displayed in a smoking household. If so it might be problematic if you're a non-smoker and also reduce the resale value significantly.
