Just drink imo shochu if you want a tasty, hard to fuck up weeb alcohol. It tastes great and forces you to get something decent as bottom tier sake taste like rubbing alcohol and good sake tastes fairly neutral with subtle flavors which many either don't pick up on just simply care for. I have a bottle of this that I really enjoy at the moment, served warm and it smells like sweet potatoes and tastes great, a bit earthy and a mild sweetness for the proof.

Sake doesn't taste very good, try shochu.

Cheap sake tastes pretty poor, but that tends to be a thing with lots of cheap things.
People drink them hot cause it masks the taste. More expensive ones are actually okay and I had a few nice ones. I prefer other drinks though. Beer here and in japan is good and I like those highball drinks in japan. So simply don't act like a weeaboo (in the original sense), that everything japanese must be good. Try different stuff, maybe ask some reccomendations. And if you like it, you like it. Everyone likes different stuff, find what you enjoy the most and stay open minded.

Never really liked sake the first time I tried it, but that was 8 years ago, and my taste for alcohol has definitely changed. The bottle I tried a few weeks ago was much better, the quality difference was huge. It really matters what you get.

If you still don't like it, there's always an actual good weeb liquor, and that's umeshu. Too bad I can't get it here, so I always bring a bottle with me home.

I had some of that Gekkeikan plum sake and it's just so damn sweet I couldn't deal with it.

If you know where to find any Makedonians, or Greeks who live/used to live in Thessaly (or northern Greece in general), I recommend asking them where to find Tsipouro.

It's a bit more like grappa, made from the scrapings of leftover grapes from a winepress, so I find it has a better body taste than ouzo does, bordering a less jarring, more flavour cohesive fortified wine.

Though the Greeks don't drink it with anise, they do produce anise flavoured tsipouro to sell to tourists. Since you like absinthe, I recommend that if you want to try tsipouro, try some of the anise-flavoured stuff first, moving on to hard tsipouro if you find it to your tastings.

I live in Japan and confirm that most Japanese "beers" are not beer. Unless you specifically look for one that says "beer" on the label, you're most likely drinking happoshu. To be fair some of them actually aren't that bad, but if you want actual beer you'd better be looking in the more expensive end of the aisle.
