I disagree with this guy since I couldn't give a shit less about the genre but still played Touhou to try it out. I found it fun even though I;m terrible at them. There's also a shitton of lore to be had and the characters are fun.

Fucking secondaries

They're solid shmups with great music, generally solid gameplay, a low barrier of entry but a high skill ceiling

They get a huge fandom because ZUN has cute, recognizable designs despite his inability to draw, and his stories are typically just enough to give you basic characteristics and interactions between characters, but enough for fans to insert all their own fan ideas and stories and create content since there's so much empty space for each character that can be filled in

Various patterns in the game are quite engaging and challenging, and the feeling of accomplishment one gets when they reach their goal of 1ccing, getting an LNB, achieving a high score, etc. is always a nice experience to have.

Of course, it depends on the goal.

A first 1cc is probably one of the most memorable moments one experiences when they play Touhou. I still remember my first Normal 1cc. When Byakuren went down and the clear bonus appeared on the screen, I recall myself jumping for joy. That was a couple years ago. Now I'm going for higher goals such as LNBs and high scoreruns, but I still have my first Normal 1cc replay file saved on a flash drive since it makes for a good memento.
