>>
>>15756198
Under normal circumstances, you'd discard 8s because you have the possibility of drawing the 3s and changing your wait to 2-5s ryanmen. But given the pons here the chances of it happening are fuck all. There's a 7s already discarded, but a 7s with three tiles left is probably better than 5s with four tiles left in terms of getting a ron.

That's not true though.
I played mahjong in Japan with Japanese people both old and young (including the staff of the place), none of which who were novices at the game, and they all said that it's not an easy game to learn at all. And of course, playing the game well isn't easy either (but you surely weren't implying this). At least that's not the case in Japanese mahjong; HK and Chinese mahjong have nothing to do with it and Chinese one is much easier.

Reminder to play mahjong for fun
>>
>>15758516
Chinese mahjong is remarkably simple. We like to complain that riichi is largely luck-based but there is way more strategy involved comparatively. Chinese has the luck factor set to 100.

I've only ever played Riichi but what exactly about Chinese mahjong makes it simpler? I've heard it been said a few times before.

There's no concept of defense. All you do is try to finish your hand first. Also instead of dora you have flowers, which counts as an extra point. When you draw it you then set it aside. So you don't strategize to work it in your hand or discard like you would the dora.

What is the best shop for shipping mahjong set to Europe?
Initially I wanted to get the YMI set (or rather distributed by them), but seeing as it is based in the US the shipping is quite steep and it would definitely get taxed.
Are there any decent Japanese shops shipping to Europe ideally through Airmail or Surface shipping (as sets are generally above 2 kg so SAL cannot be used)?

You don't need a Japanese set per se to play riichi. Any Chinese or even American set will have the tiles needed (1-9 in all suits plus winds/honors). That alone is all you really need for a nashi nashi game.

Tenbou sticks can be ordered separately, but honestly 3bux worth of coins will work just as well. You can use the flower/season/joker tiles as replacements for the red fives if needed.

The only thing really missing is the sense of authenticity you get from playing with real Japanese tiles.

You can install decrypted boot files of the game and run them if you have Henkaku running. /hbg/ has a pastebin that explains the steps to get it working and and list of currently dumped games.

>>15772006
I got this when I let my Vita sleep during the FTP transfer of the saki.vpk. If you're using the FTP method, you need to make sure your Vita doesn't sleep for the entire transfer, otherwise the file will be corrupted, and only a small part of the file will actually be transferred.

If you want to save some time, you can use QCMA to do it, but you have to change the file extension of the Saki vpk to .mp4 to allow it to transfer. After you change the file extension, you just pop it into your QMCA videos directory, go to the content manager on your Vita, and transfer videos from your connected PC to your Vita. After you transfer the renamed Saki .vpk, you need to go into the molecule shell, and the Saki.vpk should be in ux0:video/49/. Pressing triangle brings up file options, which you can rename the file with, so use this to change it back into a vpk, then you can run it and it'll install.

>>
>>15772323
Triangle to bring up the menu to declare riichi/make closed kans.

I'm not sure about how to turn off showing your waits though, I checked the options in the main menu and didn't see anything about it.
>>
>>15772347
Well if I can't I can't, I'm not playing it to be challenged like L0. What are all the main menu options, if you're moon fluent? And do challenges have restrictions or something? What's with the swimsuits?
>>
>>15772323
There's an option in the options menu that turns off highlighting the Dora and graying out tsumogiri discards. I cannot recall if it turns off showing your waits though. Give me some time to look up which option it is. I believe HanaYoriUta did a video guide on what every option in the game does too.

>>
Options menu, from top to bottom:
Music Volume
Voice Volume
Sound Effect Volume
Assist? Mode, Highlights dora tiles and tsumogiri tiles. defaults to on.
Reading voice, sets who reads off the yaku for a win. default option is whichever character won the hand, other option is to have your favorite girl read them no matter who wins.
Favorite girl: sets who shows up on the home screen and who you play as if you click random character.
Background: sets what the background image on the home screen is.

Ask if this needs clarifying

How do you defend with this? Is dropping the chun when you have multiples okay even if the tile is live?
>>
>>15774017
I usually would provided it isn't the dora.
>>
>>15774017
I wouldn't put a tanki or shanpon on a honor tile past a rushed riichi like that, but having two of them makes it a bit less likely. Still, you don't really have many options for defence. You could take a chance with the 8man that's a 2chance because you can see two of the 7m, maybe. It wouldn't be really safe, I'd probably just go for the chun, though, but since you're posting this, it makes it suspicious.

I take it you're playing with powers on judging by all those kans. Unfortunately Mako's power doesn't lend itself to huge hands like that so I probably won't ever get close with her.

Do you know what the setting underneath the abilities setting does? A friend told me it gave all around better draws even without powers, but its still a little vague. I don't know enough japanese to tell what it is or where to look up what it does.
>>
>>15777109
I recall Mako getting Chinitsu fairly easily, that's probably your best bet for big hands with her.

The guide posted earlier says that option is the character development one. Turn it on to benefit from upgraded stats from the character development page.
>>
>>15777149
Yeah easier Chinitsu and shows unsafe discards.
I also have no clue what "development" means. Is there some place where I can power up character stats or something? I had one of the PSP games as well and I don't remember any of this.
>>
>>15777164
It's completely new, wasn't in the first two games.
on the main menu, 4th option down(I think) should give you three choices.
The first choice takes you to character development
The second choice takes you to the shop
The third choice takes you to music
In character development you can spend points earned by playing as that character to increase their abilities. I'll translate what each stat does and add it to the doc.
In shop you can buy cards to unlock new outfits, characters, cgs and tilesets.
This is also where you view cgs and unlocked movies.
Getting 10 of the same card gives 1 character development point for that character.
After a game ends, the character you played as gets 1 character development point for every hand the game hand.
Every character gets a max of 70 points.

Keep buying cards in the shop to unlock the next card set and therefore new characters.

>>
>>15786803
You were lucky. You shouldn't have reached.
>>
Why do I feel like I can't improve at this game? I never know when to be aggressive vs defensive, and I'm lucky to place third. It's been really hard ever since I've entered whatever the second room is called.
>>
>>15787237
Knowing when to push is something you just slowly pick up while playing. It's easy to say generalizations like push when you're behind or have a big hand and defend at the first sign of trouble if you're ahead but it's not always so simple. Is there anything particular you struggle with?
>>
>>15787237
You have to make good and consistent decisions. Weigh your options. Decide whether the value of your hand is worth pushing, how much do you have to lose if you do, how many dora are visible, does the dealer appear to be in tenpai, etc. If you aren't consistent you will continue to place in 3rd and 4th. You should play while you're rested and attentive.
>>
>>15787277
>>15787286
I don't mind losing, it's just that I'm not sure how to play to improve.
>>
>>15787289
You can't suddenly learn everything at once, but you can pick things to work on. I remember taking a while making a mental note after each player's draw whether it was kept or discarded. That in turn allows you to judge if people are tenpai or betaori. Have you read much theory, like the dynaman book?
>>
>>15787316
Yeah, I've read the book.
>>
>>15787322
So why do you think you can't win? Do you often deal in or just aren't fast enough to complete hands?
>>
2.0
>>
>>15787330
Both. I have a really hard time reading dama tenpai, and tenpai when someone only opens their hand with one call. I'm just in general pretty shit.
>>
>>15787341
The whole point of dama tenpai is it's supposed to be hard to read. If someone hasn't changed their hand for a while and the round is in the last row of discards you can consider folding if you don't have a good hand or aren't tenpai depending on the situation. One call isn't much better, but you can assume if it's a late call they've probably done it to get to tenpai. Dora pon is a special one and you probably want to start folding as soon as their hand settles.

Everyone was shit at some point for varying lengths of time, all that matters is you enjoy it and keep playing.
>>
>>15787368
I like the game. I just get so frustrated with myself. I feel like such a failure.
>>
>>15787471
You get over your temperament (or at least I did) when you play more games. Bullshit does, and will often, happen to you but it's part of the nature of the game. Frustration with things like "why did I deal in there?", or "why didn't I riichi?" go away when everything becomes second nature and you're playing consistantly.

Even while winning, the game is still playing. And yes, I made a mistake here.

So, WWYD?

>I feel like such a failure
Every single mahjong player knows that feel. Those who don't admit it are lying. Just keep playing, and look into game topics, that you need to work on. Stuff like defense, scoring, tile efficiency, game situations, and the like.

Compared to many players, I suck. Having a 28% tokujou 4th place rate right now is really bad. But it only tells me one thing: work to improve my game.

>>15787341
I'll post game replay here later. Gems like these come once in a while.
>>
>>15791758
>WWYD
I don't think it particularly matters in that situation, but you have a 468p ryankan and a 56s ryanman with a spare 8s. 8s seems like an obvious choice for efficiency, but South is probably going for souzu and just discarded one from within his hand so he's probably tenpai. If it were closer I'd have bailed with 1s. Did you deal into chinitsu with the 8?
>>
>>15791758
>So, WWYD?

It's the last draw and you're not in tenpai. The 1s just passed, so I'd discard that. It's only mildly dangerous against the toimen, but he has an open hand with no fanpai, so unless he has iitsu then he can't ron on the 1s.

If you're not close to winning you shouldn't be calling kan even if you're behind right? If you've only got a 25% chance of winning a given hand it means you're taking a 75% chance of letting someone win with an extra dora indicator.

Its been a long ass time since I've played. I remember there being a way to play on the downloaded client without paying. Does that still exist?

What do I have to do to get senses that don't miss potential these gyakuten hands?
>>
>>15818433
Is it going to be streamed or recorded for future viewing?

>5 ankous

Shit, brother, talk about flow. Someone up there really wanted you to get it. Now that you've disappointed them, you'll never get a yakuman.

At least the final tables. But hopefully, there's random video of the games during the day too.

It keeps happening. Goodbye my R.

Maybe it's because houhou probably slows down a lot during certain hours of the day, but it's still pretty lame!

Just screwed up with a rule I didn't know. I was in richi with 1, 4, 7 man machi for itsu. I pulled the 7, but passed. Pulled the 1 to make iitsu, but they said I was chombo, becuase after riichi i must agaru on a tsumo and cant pass.
>>
>>15827983
I'm not sure about this: you would go in furiten (and so you can't ron 7 anymore), but you can pass a win if you don't want without a chombo
>>
>>15827995
Nah, if you riichi, you have to win if you can. (well, you can pass, but that means your hand is dead and you can't win under any circumstance)
>>
>>15828106
are you sure? isn't it the same as a furiten riichi?
>>
>>15828179
That's how I remember it, and apparently that's what the game told the other guy.
>>
>>15828186
http://arcturus.su/wiki/Chombo

nothing about not getting a tsumo
>>
>>15828281
Yeah I was wrong, the page for riichi says the same.
>>
>>15828295
So that means it wasnt chombo?
>>
>>15828303
if it wasn't an house rule, no
>>
>>15828303
Based on what I'm reading here, no.
Relevant passage:
"Likewise, after calling riichi, a player may decline the option to call on a winning tile, whether it be by self-draw or by discard. However, if a win is declined, then the riichi declared hand is subject to furiten for the remainder of the hand." (from: http://arcturus.su/wiki/Riichi#Furiten)
>>
>>15828312
Thanks, but this old jap wont back down. House rule he never mentioned.
>>
I haven't heard case that you can't win by tsumo during furiten. The only case that you can't win is if you don't have any yaku in the first place, and even then closed hand tsumo still counts as yaku.
>>
>>15828343
It was because i furitenned AFTER my riichi
>>
>>15828354
If you pass the winning tile, that's just a furiten. Unless the house rule specifically says case like that counts a chombo, you can still win by tsumo, even if you pass 10+ times.

I think I'm having less fun than when I first started playing but I'm also less prone to getting angry about the inevitability of losing some matches, so overall it's become a more stable and even dispersal of enjoyment rather than the highs and lows of ecstasy and bitter frustration that it used to be.

Things are going great this month, I'm about to return to neutral R1500 after sinking as low as 1200 in my early games. The next rank is within reach too!

We're all gonna make it brahs

Do you guys have good luck rituals you use before games? I tend to rub my chun tile right before a match. It's nonsense from a strictly digital point of view, but my luck has been pretty good lately, so who knows.

I don't like losing so I only play against computer opponents!
