The only puppets Americans are familiar with apart from the simple ones at the circus or on kid's shows like Mr. Rogers was from Team America: World Police.
Apart from that I can't say many people were that familiar with puppets at all. It's just a culture gap.

Anyone older than baby age is familiar with other ones like the Thunderbirds and similar shows, but more actiony things tend to use stop-motion animations with clay dolls or other types of dolls or whatever puppets that aren't moved in real time are called.

I don't think Thunderbolt is anything too different from what people would think of stop-motion type puppetry, if less "realistic".
