FLAC at least gives the option of retaining the best quality available or converting to mp3 from there if you want instead of sticking everyone with a lossy rip.

About 30GB, no big deal. If it is a big deal, you can transcode down to whatever size you like. On the other hand, there's no way for Joe Audiophile to transcode up from a lossy format.

Lossy file format is like those literal rocks people would buy and put next to to their audio jacks because they thought it improved the sound quality.
