Some preliminary information:
Was in Tokyo
In Kyoto now
Going back to Tokyo in some days

Pic related is what I copped in Akihabara. Win the love live figure in a 500 yen crane game, the rest are all second hand, none more than 10 bucks

Sorry for interrupting your seamless barrage of touhou threads. Just sage and let the thread die if you aren't interested.

Though you'd think that people on a board dedicated to Japanese culture may be interested in asking people who are in Japan about Japan and what it's like. But anyway, refer to my previous comment.

/jp/ is the touhou board.
m00t was a spiteful prick and allowed retards from /a/ to have the name changed to /jp/ - Otaku Culture. The whole blogging style ask me anything type threads are generally frowned upon because we aren't interested in オフ会 or IRL chat. It happened a while ago and so I don't really blame you for being unaware of the situation.
Ideally this thread would be better off on /r9k/. It has a bad rep due to the influx of normalfags but they tend to ignore the sort of threads which used to be good on the board, leaving mostly anons are are receptive to discussing such things.

Over the past two months there have been a couple of anons posting from Japan and doing a sort of question and answer type thing.
>>
I'm in Tokyo too. Wanna go spend some time together?

How long are you still in Tokyo? I'm in Kyoto at the moment, returning to Tokyo on the 23rd (or the 24th, I'll have to check my schedule). Met a Canadian from 4chan in Tokyo the day before yesterday and we had lots of fun, so sure, meeting up sounds good to me.

Depends really on how much money you plan on spending and where you're going. You can get full meals from convenience stores for 500-1000 yen (though I am currently regretting that. It was tasty, but my stomach has been aching all evening). Proper meals at some kind of restaurant have run me at 20-30 bucks so far, but it'd probably run you cheaper if you don't get two beers with your meal. You can often get a good meal for 500 yen or so at the places that have ticket machines for the meal (called 定食 iirc), I've had ebi fry udon for breakfast at 500 yen and it was the best breakfast I've had so far.
Make sure to consider your itinerary, subway travel is fairly cheap and convenient, but the shinkansen sure is expensive (I was too busy to bother getting a JR rail pass, something I now also regret).

I unfortunately can't recommend you a whole lot in terms of scenery yet, I spent the first few days of my trip meeting people that I knew for various reasons.
The hike up to Fushimi Inari Taisha has an amazing atmosphere to it though, and the tourist crowd thins out quite quickly the higher up you get. I didn't come across anyone for the upper third of the hike, and people already became scarce after the first third. Best go early in the morning or more towards the evening, you'll get less people like that, and it's even more atmospheric. I don't think I've ever felt something quite like how I felt walking through those shrine gates, surrounded by a misty forest and the sound of the cicadas. I feel like the term "mystical" is about as close as I could get in describing it, but even that is far from cutting it.
>>
>>15535887
Not OP here, it doesn't seem outrageous to think that on an imageboard with so many boards dedicated to Japanese cultural exports that there would exist a JAPAN GENERAL board where threads like this and the language learning threads and culture question threads would be welcomed. But for some unknown reason, there isn't one. Even though 4chan is now owned by Japanese moot.

Really, if there are dozens of boards for various hentai content, why can't there be an /idols/ board and a /touhou/ board?

Question for those living in Japan.

I'm moving to Kanagawa this August, got a job there close to Machida. Any tips or things I should know beforehand about Tokyo Metro?

Just get a fucking Suica.
Station maps aren't THAT hard to read. Just go to a station one day when you aren't in a hurry and spend a little time looking at one, then you're pretty much set.

>hanayo
Well, she only worth 50 yen. It's nothing to blog about.
>>
>>15540746
Um, he'll still be confused, the system isn't that easy, especially for a first time foreigner
My advice? Use Google Maps, it'll tell you exactly what trains to take and all the times that they come in. No need to memorize anything and you get internet everywhere, including the underground tunnels.
>>
>>15540830
I agree that Google Maps is fantastic, but line maps aren't that hard to read and you feel a lot better being able to navigate having to rely on your phone all the time.
>>
>>15536049

That is because for the cultural exchange side of things it already exists.

>>
>>15540830
Even if you're a clueless EOP, everything in Tokyo Metro is in English.

Honestly it's fucking annoying to hear English announcements all the time.
>>
>>15535887
fuck off
>>
>>15540873
That's great and all but when you're in a crowded station, crunching on time, trying to get to the next train with no initial idea of the station's layout, Google Maps solves everything.
You can get comfortable with station layouts with the help of GM and still check out the floor plans and signs, it just makes it a lot easier. And you're most likely going to be using GM anyhow when you're out on ground level looking for set things.
>>
>>15541382
I was gonna to reply sarcastically, but honestly you have a point.

I'm already familiar with how the metro/train system in Tokyo works, so I can easily get anywhere from anywhere without looking it up, but I guess for a first timer, especially someone who doesn't know Japanese, it can be confusing.

It's still annoying how foreigner-oriented Tokyo is, I'm not getting over that.

Original poster here.

From the potential residences to my job it's not really a big deal I think.

The company directed me to this website (www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/) that informed me that it'd take about 20 minutes to get there, after changing trains once. I've also looked at Google Maps to find the routes.

Seems pretty simple to me. Machida is about 40 minutes away from downtown Tokyo so the lines aren't that complex. I'll be looking into this Suica thing though, sounds useful.

I was there last winter and if you're not using Google Maps in Japanese you're gonna be fucked. They translated stuff like 外回り/内回り into clockwise/counterclockwise when there was no signage indicating that type of terminology in the station. If a gaijin went to a station agent (and most Japanese are fairly illiterate in english) you'd get nowhere if you showed him your GMaps and all it had were liberal transliterations.

Also your GPS isn't going to work in a station (or god forbid you're underground). Eventually I switched my phone to Japanese so that I wouldn't have to deal with shit translations and use things that are actually QA'd by natives.
>>
>>15541718

That's some good info, thanks.
>>
>>15535581
how much?
>>
>>15541718
Um, what? Cells work underground and so does Google Maps. Hell, I used them while in the fucking train to keep track of where I was going and how many stops I had left before I had to get off. If you say the name as it is translated (in english), the station agent will know where you want to go. You know how I know? Because I had to constantly do this my frist time there (two years ago). Why would you need to know "clockwise" and "counterclockwise"? You have a visual route presented on GM.

And here's the best advice: rent a cell phone when you go to Japan, don't rely on your own.
>>
>>15535545
Is the countryside comfy?
>>
>>15541485
Japan will recover from 2020 right?
>>
>>15542041
And I should add that both Google Maps and Apple's mapping software tell you which platform your train is on, so you're not going in the wrong direction.
>>
>>15542061
I'm not hopeful.
>>
>>15541718
The stations are also full of huge signs that make it pretty clear where which train goes. And above the ticket machines you find a map of the entire system, so if you take a moment to check it out, you'll learn everything you need.

>>15548176
So?

I'm not some clapper or any other anglo faggot, English for me is a foreign language too. I have no need for it in Japan. Really, I live in Japan to be surrounded by Japanese language, not English (and Chinese and Korean, those are everywhere too).

I guess you're just some weeaboo that would get lost on a straight street without English markers.
>>
>>15548189
Who gives a shit about English, you used the phrase "foreign-oriented".

You're probably some turkish kebab seller who is just as foreign as every other foreigner here. You're just mad signs happen to be in English and not whatever irrelevant language you speak.
>>
>>15548189
>Tokyo is too foreigner oriented
>It should be less foreigner oriented in order to cater to me, a foreigner

You're a funny guy anon
>>
And I don't know why OP even made this thread.

Anyone who goes to Japan, particularly Tokyo, and isn't expecting to see a shitload of foreigners (especially if you're from /jp/ and squander your entire trip in Akiba) is in for a surprise. Going to or living in Japan is no longer anything special so I don't know why you think people would have questions for you.
>>
>>15548214
Please stop assuming, you damn weeaboo, I know Japanese, I want signs in Japanese only. And yes, of course I'm a foreign person in Japan. Unlink you, you weeaboo, I have no delusions about "being Japanese in my soul" or some other drivel like that, I just want to see Japanese in Japan.

>>15548216
I don't see what's funny about it. I guess you're some globalist that wants entire world in English and Arabic.
>>
>>15548264
>I don't see what's funny about it. I guess you're some globalist that wants entire world in English and Arabic.
What leads you to this conclusion is beyond me, but in case you haven't noticed, there's actually a whole lot more Japanese than there's English in Tokyo. Maybe you'd notice if you stopped reading the English writing all the time.
>>
>>15548272
You're a really ugly person that can't do anything else than attack others. Ugly, as in your mind is ugly, just specifying.

I'm reading and listening to Japanese all the time, it only makes the English more noticeable in places where it's concentrated, mainly the transport system.
>>
>>15548279
Anon, Tokyo is a global city. Whoever is in charge of all the relevant signs around Tokyo is aware of this. Being a global city means that lots of people who don't or barely know your language come to your city for reasons other than enjoying your language, such as business or simply tourists who don't want to bother learning an entire language. These kind of visitors are important to a city since they bring lots of business to the city, which is a good thing, hence the city has an interest to accommodate these people. English being a global language that many people know, it becomes the obvious choice as a secondary language to use for signs and announcements around places that these people will visit.

Getting annoyed at a city for accommodating to a source of business is absurd.

And please feel free to point out what I wrote that "attacked" you.
You're the one calling people "ugly", "clappers", "anglo faggots" and "damn weeabos". If someone here is doing some kind of attacking, then it's you.
>>
>>15548307
You're right. I still don't like it. By the way that's the only thing I said to begin with, that I don't like it. Person's preferences aren't always reasonable.

Then some faggot started crying about it >>15548176, so I tried to think of the reasons why would he do it. Him being shitty anglo weeaboo seemed like the obvious reason.
>>
>>15542053
Very much so.
>>
>>15548315
The most obvious reason he'd say it is because he thinks you're a shitty anglo weeaboo.
>>
>>15548307
Not that guy and I don't at all have anything against English and whatnot around Tokyo.
Still, I got really triggered by the recent move to replace traditional buddhist shrine markings on maps because idiotic safe-zone dweller cretins got offended thinking it was a nazi symbol.
