The 4 routes are nothing special and their pacing is sometimes really bad.
You can think of them as a fandisk to the common route with some revelations.
Kazuki route is pretty fun though.

The true route did deliver and the ending was satisfying to me.

Overall the game is good and really entertaining (most of the common route at least) but it really shouldn't have been this long.

I'd agree with the anon you replied to apart from his sentiments about the true route.

Pacing wise the side heroine routes were indeed fucked and most of them had no interesting or plot relevant stuff going on. Like he said, at least half of them could have been optional fan disc content and it wouldn't have made a slick of difference for the main plot. They felt like a huge waste of time and opportunities, because they could have utilized f.ex. Haida Riko being captured alive or Uki actually real-booting Takuru's wish into reality as interesting ways of making the main murder mystery unfold in a completely different manner, with new revelations regarding the main plot. Instead they had side plots with no relevance to main story. Even Nono's route, which I liked was basically just a red herring and only relevant stuff was it somewhat fleshing out Serika's feelings.

Hana's route was really weird and I initially disliked it too, but it managed to turn the silliness into something awesome by taking it to the absolute extremes, helped by the best track in the entire game playing during that one scene. In addition, unlike other heroines, her route also actually had at least some stuff relevant for the true route as it properly introduced Wakui. Though I'm sure that too could have been woven into the common or true route somehow.

True route was extremely disappointing for me because I was expecting the plot elements revealed in the side heroine routes to actually get used somehow. When the credits started rolling my first reaction was "wait, what? that's it?". It's especially bad when you consider the game's main climax was already in the common route's ending, then you're forced to play side heroine routes with almost zero relevancy to anything, and when you expect the new things introduced in those side heroine routes to finally get utilized somehow the game laughs at you and just ends, because the true "route" is just more of a short epilogue. I understand that the game wanted to be all feely about Takuru and the heroines refusing their delusions, but we didn't need fucking 4 side routes full of nothing for it.

Silent World is lighter than I expected, but I guess it'll get going in later chapters.

So I started コトバの消えた日 ～心まで裸にする純愛調教～, because I quite like the artstyle. I pretty much put all VNs with that "style" in my backlog at some point, if it's terrible I should find out fast, right? Yeah.

So I started it and it was nice. One girl was quite a bit to my liking, the music nice.. a nice build-up to a normal romance.
And then, just randomly after a few hours of completely normal content, everything changed. Without explanation. The protag got "horny" and figured the only way to get over that is show the heroine naked in front of all kinds of dudes and get off of her embarrassment, because she hates that (duh!).................................................... wtf? No explanation? Just randomly such a ... "twist"? That.. "solution" to feeling horny? You even get a nice link to her thoughts so you know for sure she hates it. Great! Where the fuck did all that come from all of a sudden?!?

Yeah, I haven't checked anything, or else I would've known it's about exhibition, but that wasn't even that. Getting off of humiliating a girl is.. not exhibition. I got trolled so hard by this shit.


tl;dr: Be careful what you add to your backlog. Holy shit.. it really seemed completely "normal" moege-ish at first.

Maybe I wrote that a bit badly. It's not about it not being a "vanilla romance", but about HOW it pulled that shit out of its ass. The title is obviously there. I didn't know anything else than that though.

It's literally goes from "moege" to "random weird humiliation fetish for the heck of it" without any explanation or reason behind it. And not just a bit, but I got through like 1000 lines or so hoping to get SOME kind of connection to what was before that. Nope. It continues and continues. It's like a sudden genre shift without reason, explanation or anything.

Lovely Cation 2 has an easy mode and a normal mode. But, I struggle to imagine what easy mode would be like. Normal mode is already super easy, just buying whatever the girl mentions (Dragon Boy manga, Kamen Raiba dvd, etc) and continually visit wherever she frequents. There's less than no challenge here pretty much unless you have 0 reading comprehension and can't figure out you need to go where the girl you want to meet is to meet her.

Focus on pumping VIT,DEX,INT, and whichever stats align with your chosen heroine's interests.
If you see an item worth more than 6 stat points grab it as it's probably important.
As a note you can't get every CG for a heroine in one play through because there's a branching point for which gift you decide to get them.

I just discovered that Atelier Kaguya created a two-part dungeon crawler series called "Dungeon Crusaderz (sic)".I know nothing about these games, but their battle screens sure look nice. Did anyone play them?

So far, yes. Even got a troll-bossfight with tons of adds where the boss does hurt and everything looked normal. Till you realize that the boss is down with one hit. (which is strangely fitting story-wise..)
The dungeons so far are not small but don't have enough to actually find in if you ask me. (as in treasure) 2d sidescrolling with a bit.. questionable controls.
Battles are nice though, featuring a grid-based formation system separate for both sides, with "area" attacks and whatnot. Though no "range" which is weird.
Also has 5 different difficulty-settings, which is always a nice touch.

Now I'm not THAT far in, so I dunno how it manages to hold up. But I feel the gameplay is pretty well done for the most part. Also gotta love that characters have their unique abilities, like one girl can use monster dropped cards as equip and thus learns their monster skills (think ff blue magic, but as drops and you can only equip a certain amount), or another always has an autonomous robot in the battle with her which automatically attacks and can cover her in addition to everything she herself can do. The screen I posted is that robot of course.

I'm trying to play Baldr Force, but it's a pain in the ass for various reasons since it's an old game. Besides the tiny 480 sized window, it seems text hookers don't even work with the engine.

How is the PS2 version? If I have to look up words by hand, I might as well play that one since you can freely resize the emulator window.
However, I read it has some new voices. I don't care if it's all-ages, as long as the voices aren't bad. Also does it even work flawlessly emulated? Anyone tried it?

I haven't tried it yet, but a general emulation advice would be changing your audio sync settings.
Basically timestretching will try to keep your audio and video frame accurate, but can lead to audio skips. Try setting it to asynchronous, since losing frame accuracy is not a big deal in a VN.
You could also try changing the audio engine.

If you have an SSD, you could also try placing your game iso on it, as audio skips can be because of an unexpected disk read.

Different guy from before, but if you think about how time travel is supposed to work using 時空震 in Island, that implies the entire universe is going back in time, so based on that my theory would be that they probably occur once every ~25k years, which would help explain why the exact same people show up every time on the island and in ISLAND. We also know that Setsuna can retain bits of his memory and even regain them fully using the incomplete time machine. Hence, it's possible that after finishing Karen's or Sara's route a 時空震 occurs sending the entire universe back in time, but with Setsuna possibly retaining his memories because of having experienced time travel before, similar to Sara's explanation of different timelines.

That said, this all hinges upon the idea that the incomplete time machine does provide some protection against 時空震, otherwise there's explanation for all the names carved inside of it. I think it's reasonable to say that though, because otherwise I don't know how you explain the battery for the time machine never running out.

While this was never explained, I have a theory regarding this. Remember the origami scene where Sara hypothesises what would happen if she went back in time and taught her ancestors how to fold a crane? It seems to me that Setsuna is like the knowledge of a crane, he came from the future, who in turn came from the past, so basically there was no origin. It's just an eternal cycle of him travelling backwards and forwards in time.

One character being found sleeping in old ruins with an out-of-place artifact that leads to developing techology to manipulate the flow of time is the thing that sets events in Silent World in motion and I presume it might be relevant to Island.

If you're gonna read it, the two extra chapters from the book version are pretty necessary for enjoyment. One throws in explanations for tons of stuff and the other one complements the serialized ending very well.

Also be aware there are some pretty cliched scenes. Protagonist is a 15 years old and acts like it at time, which can be pretty boring to read ("I want to become an adult"). Overall nothing that would destroy the work, but it could definetly do without some such scenes.

Non-H CGs just help add to a scene / are often just really nice to look at compared to the same backgrounds/sprites you've been looking at for hours. That's not to say that CG have no use. But using them for completely irrelevant scenes usually does nothing or at least not much. That's not the reason. The Tachie are actually really good. (and e-mote) There are only like 6-7 normal cg in the route I've played, and 2 of those weren't needed and would've been better with Tachie.

That said, some VNs combine both things which I probably prefer the most. Mini portraits in the text-box. You can even use e-mote with that as well. Trains does something sorta similar to that at times.

Because a static CG with 3 variations isn't the same as all the different stuff the e-mote animated Tachie. The latter can do way more. Heck I'm even torn about the confession CG, as I feel like that scene might've worked way better with the e-mote animation.

Purely Cation however is an awkward example. Having all the animation via e-mote for Tachie, but none for CG, feels off by default.

It's obviously way more work to make all the CG pretty though, which is the most common issue. Tachie are used for all the game, so they get a lot of attention, or at least should get that. CG are used for a short part. Offering the same versatility in expressions and poses and whatnot in every CG is quite a bit of work. Probably even more so if you use e-mote. Trains obviously has that, but I'm not sure how many companies will release a similar VN in the next years. (as in ~100 CG with all of them fully e-mote animated) Wouldn't be surprised if the answer is "not a single other one"..


But eh. It really depends on the VN. That's ultimately all I can say here. And something like Purely Cation, where a lot of attention was given to the Tachie and the animation, including several pose changes and "adaption" during one line.. having some static CG pop up every now and then simply feels worse. It's like all the liveliness is suddenly stripped away and it's static with every few lines the CG changing to another variation.

Where this conversation started was the fact that dumping a nukige amount of H scenes into a moege / VN in general usually means there will be significantly less non-H CGs. I'd much rather that effort go into more non-H CGs / good scenes and cut the amount of H scenes to half (or less). When purely talking about tachie vs CG, it's a matter of opinion which one you like more, and I strongly disagree with you when you say tachie look significantly better. E-mote can work with CGs as the other guy said, so that's not really much of an argument, and neither is the amount of work required either if they're going to have a certain number of CGs anyways.
