I think it's worth it simply because it's different from the usual harem chuuni reincarnation garbage.
The second half of the story is completely different from the anime though.

I know what you mean, I'm generally not a huge fan of the stereotypical haremshit.
That actually almost turned me off of Iris, the first chapter has a lot of cliches I wasn't really into, but it got really good right after that.

Last book I finished was the second volume of Miniskirt Space Pirates. Definitely a fun series, I'm already about a third of the way through the next book.

I liked Chaika, but I definitely felt like it just got progressively worse with each volume. The first 6 were definitely good, but the tail end of the series just felt like it dropped all the cool stuff that characterized the start of the series. To me, it felt like it was just rushing to finish after that. I guess that's arguably better than dragging forever, but it was just really disappointing.

I read this a couple days ago. It kind of petered out at the end, but the suspense until the last quarter or so of the book was amazing, though that was kind of the point of the story. The mystery of how the bullying was carried out and all the various factors surrounding it made it seem like it could only be explained by supernatural phenomena or some kind of crazy hidden force, and the author just keeps upping the ante until the end making things more and more confusing, and then in the end the twist turns out to be very simple. I feel like the author should have delved a little deeper into how the human aptitude test works, since that was the motivator for all the unfortunate stuff the students go through, and the details of how students rank up or down is all left unclear (they describe some kind of voting system, but how the votes from each student are weighed and what they're even voting for is never mentioned. I can only assume it's something like the guess who tests some Japanese schools used to do).

Pretty good book overall. Very relatable protagonist too if you're the stereotypical 4chan type (he describes himself as キモオタコミュ障ボッチ童貞ゴミクズ野郎 at one point).
