While Mangagamer did hint towards a Valentine's Sale, it would appear that may have to be cancelled as their payment processor is still down. It would appear they're quite unlucky indeed.

In order to make observing the chart slightly easier, I've omitted the meager 2013 data we have. I'll now be dumping the full data point list on pastebin for anyone that would like it.

Haro's been bitching about payment processor a lot lately(even prior to current events). I wonder if mangagamer's attempting to move to a new one?

Maybe Sakura Santa just didn't do as well with MG as they hoped so they hopped back to Sekai? Or maybe Sekai just still had some rights to the sakura games?
>>
>>14762638

Ours actually isn't that bad aside from the issues some people have with getting their cards rejected. I bitch about it a lot because it's annoying that a number of avenues for processing payments aren't open to us just because 18+ material = high risk, and a lot of people want alternative payment methods (eg. Paypal).

The current situation is really shitty for a variety of reasons which we'll be explaining soon (hopefully with an eta on when shit will be back up), probably Monday if things don't change before then.

This weekend would have been fun if it weren't for everything blowing up at the last second...

Hey Haro, when are things like euphoria and Gahkthun going to leave the project progress page? It seems kinda silly to have things released last year still listed on a progress page.

>>14763228

Hm, it's pretty cute? It's basically a moege punctuated by moments of extreme (text-based) violence. Like, the true route is mostly brutally and systematically murdering all the side characters.

Fuka's not the strongest of protags, but she's got some moments. Also there's a whole route about her getting addicted to male prostitutes and one of them gets a little /too/ excited when you tell him you like hurting people. Also Pashet's cute? She has a route.
>>
>>14763245
Jesus Christ, that doesn't sound like a moege at all but rather something you'd see Innocent Grey publish.
>>
>>14763245
>It's basically a moege punctuated by moments of extreme (text-based) violence.
So there's not much plot/story across all the routes?
>>
>>14763253

I dunno, it's really weird. Most of the violence has very little consequence because all the major characters are immortal, except in the true route.

>>14763256

There's some? I wouldn't say it's the sort of game you really read for the plot though.
>>
>>14762570
Fucking fantastic. SP not only has once again picked a already translated project but they'll once again only release a censored version of a +18 product (specially because of Mare). This kind of stuff really tells a lot about the people behind the company.

I personally don't mind that much getting a official translation of a VN I already read and enjoyed. What really ticks me off is the fucking censored release. Honestly, fuck you SP.

I can't wait to see what Chuee will say about this...

Hopefully this didn't impact Kindred Spirits launch window sales or Haruka's preorders too much in the long run. In Kindred Spirits case, people who didn't want to wait might just buy it on Steam which loses MG 30% of the sales. This really could negatively impact its performance on the year end ranking as well.
>>
>>14763170
Good thing for Steam sales in its case, since without them its sales on MG could've been really sparse due to the CC processing issue.
>>
>>14763245
>Also Pashet's cute? She has a route.
Yuri route?
>>
>>14764180

Yurirei had a pretty good preorder window on mangagamer's site, even though it's ridiculously hard to measure it's likely sales due to the bundles. I estimated 400ish last week(by removing the total number of possible bundle sales and then guessing at what the sales chart would have looked like based on the popularity chart) and it would appear steamspy agrees
http://steamspy.com/app/402620
(see the owners prior to it going on sale to see that I actually undershot in my estimate a bit). That's almost twice what gahkthun did in it's preorder period.

Even if it gets no more sales and doesn't end up showing up in the year end chart, I doubt mangagamer will care when it's on track to sell at least three times as much as gahkthun.

Haruka is the bigger worry. It was doing okay in preorders(though it appears to be trailing behind yurirei), and I had estimated it at 300ish sales(though given how I undershot yurirei, I'd probably revise that up to 350ish). But without steamsales to back it up, if it's launch is blown then the entire game could end up being a muddling 500-600ish break even sales affair that I'm sure mangagamer would be disappointed with.
>>
>>14763949
OP still has translations listed when the translator has literally said "I cannot read Japanese, but I watch a lot of anime and use translation aggregator."

Well yes, that is what I was getting at. That anonymous just seemed worried about yurirei when there's really no reason to be, what with it breaking even on preorders on mangagamer's site and then selling atleast 1k+ copies on steam.
>>
>>14764884

>>

>>
>>14765041

Isn't there a decent sized Alicesoft fanbase because of Rance?

MG should try and get them involved
>>
>>14765082
Not even a large enough fanbase to keep a thread in /vg/ alive. I don't think mobilizing ten to twenty extra sales is going to help.
>>
>>14765082
>Isn't there a decent sized Alicesoft fanbase because of Rance?

Yeah, about that...
>>
>>14765089
Maybe it's because everyone hates general circlejerks.
>>
>>14765089
Nearly one and half years since the last English release. That still makes it a fairly sizeable fanbase when it comes to VNs.
>>
Do you think Maria will release Rance if Haruka fails and MG decides not to do an official release?
>>
>>14765104
You're assuming it was going strong even before then and didn't need to be blatantly bumped several times a day to keep from being pushed off. It most certainly was not. Granted, it's gotten even more empty than it was before, but that's because the translator circlejerk disappeared when the translators disappeared with a cry of "trolled you all, lol. Now give us money for something else and maybe two years from now you'll get the thing I spent the last 9 months promising to give you next week."
>>
>>14765114
No. Not that Haruka sales really should mean anything to Rance sales given that they're really targeted at different audiences.

>>
>>14765134
Okay. I was just wondering if there was really anything else MG could do to push Haruka sales up. I want to play Oyako Rankan
>>
>>14765140
You can't fucking say Rance has tame sex scenes. Comparatively maybe, but not objectively.
>>
>>14765151
To people who buy Japanese porn games it has objectively rather tame scenes save for the very rare sex scene from a villain.

>>14765149
They do care about Evenicle as well.
>>
>>14765165
And only about 10 English speakers outside that thread have even heard of Evenicle.
>>
>>14765171

I actually think Evenicle would actually be a pretty easy sell as it could piggyback off senran kagura's popularity a bit in a "WAIT HE DOES PORN TOO?" way.
>>
>>14765190
You overestimate Senran Kagura's popularity.

And the rarity of Senran Kagura's porn.
>>
>>14765165
>To people who buy Japanese porn games it has objectively rather tame scenes save for the very rare sex scene from a villain.
On one side you have moege and similar shit where every H-scene is vanilla with hand-holding.
On the other side you have nukige with shitting in people's mouths and sewing two girls together.

I would say Rance is half-way on the scale. Not close to either of them. I highly doubt the second category is more numerous, so Rance is objectively less tame than the majority of Japanese porn games.
>>
>>14765209
You'd be surprised. But fair call. The point is that Haruka and Rance have a different target audience anyway in both Japan and in the west.
>>
>>14764399
You undershot every single mangagamer release by the simple fact that the method you use is extremely flawed, the biggest flaw being that you dont take in consideration the fact that one order number may contain several games.

Haro even answered a question about that.
https://ask.fm/Good_Haro/answers/134343230056

And about the bundle a big flaw in guessing how much MG sold during the period is the fact that we dont have data on the first day of the bundle when pretty much half the sales happened and a good number of the codes were redeemed, and because of the you end putting all of the bundles number on the remaining days undercutting MG sales on the period.
>>
>>14765248

That's why they're estimates anonymous. Just as Haro says in the question you linked, it's the best we can do with the data available.
>>
>>14765055
Good job mindlessly repeating things you've heard even though it's not at all relevant to the post you're responding to.

The comment you were responding to was stating Yurirei isn't any more explicit than a game like The Witcher 3, so it makes no sense to buy it to make a statement to Valve that people want porn on Steam. And even though that has nothing to do with your comment, it does manage to disprove the bullshit you're repeating; as Yurirei is only about as explicit as The Witcher 3, it's allowed on Steam, regardless of where it came from.

There's nothing wrong with bitching, but keep it relevant and most of all don't mindlessly repeat things you think people here want to hear (preaching to the choir). This is not tumblr, even if it is starting to look more and more like it.
>>
>>14765303
I know but I am tired of seeing people using those numbers as arguments of why MG shouldnt bring X or Y game and that they are going bankrupt.

That guess is really the best that you can do with the info available, but it really undershots the releases, and it is used by some as definite proof of poor sales.
>>
>>14765334

That's bullshit and you know it. GTA5 can get away with trevor railing a chick and whipping his cock around but it takes something as tame as yurirei before gaben will even consider it.
>>
>>14765340

I've never seen these numbers used outside of /jp/.

Further, I don't really think it undershoots that often or as heavily as you seem to imply. For yurirei/haruka in particular we've got multiple factors throwing off the numbers. Given that, being off by 25% is pretty good, I'd think.
>>
>>14764391

Not really, but it's >implying implications enough that you could read one of her ending branches as kind of romantic if you wanted.
>>
>>14765362

Also what's further, anyone referencing any numbers as a defense against licensing something is someone who has clearly not read what I was writing, as the majority of titles that I've bothered to try to do the math for have been ones that have been successes or at least break-even ventures.

>>
>>14766376
That's why it's always referred to by the creators as Baldr Sky in every way, Dive 1/2 is always written in small text in a different style along with the English subtitle, "Dive" doesn't appear on a bunch of official artwork with the title, and literally nobody in Japan refers to it that way, right?

It's literally always written as
BALDR SKY
ᴰᶦᵛᵉ ¹﹕ ᴸᵒˢᵗ ᴹᵉᵐᵒʳʸ
or
BALDR SKY
ᴰᶦᵛᵉ ²﹕ ᴿᵉᶜᵒʳᵈᵃʳᵉ

You'd have to be retarded to think that's supposed to be read as

It's Sekai Project, so it's the latter.

As far as I'm aware, the only information Sekai has released is that they've licensed Hoshimemo, and that it'll be released in 2016. Anything beyond that is speculation; a bunch speculation based on Sekai's earlier behavior, some speculation based on Insem's tweet implying he's not involved, and tons of entirely baseless speculation.

How else do you think they're going to translate a decently long VN that quickly when they can't even find translators to work on their doujin games in a reasonable timeframe? In all likelihood, they're going to do similar to what they did with Clannad. Use the original (shitty) translation, and rewrite every line, while fixing the most obvious errors.

>>
>>14767250
Okay, so yeah, nothing confirming one way or the other.

I mean if they want me to buy a copy, I'm not buying unless Denpasoft forks over an 18+ version. No cash will be spent otherwise. I can always do things the old way and I'm sure someone will either patch in H-scenes or rip the new translation.
>>
>>14767287
I still have yet to see any proof that Sekai's Clannad release is based on the fan translation. Putting aside the rights issues (you would have to contact every single translator to legally use the fan translation), what would be the point of using the fan translation if you're going to completely rewrite every single line? Do you think they're going out of their way to release something with the lowest possible quality they can manage without people noticing?

>>
>>14767356
>I still have yet to see any proof that Sekai's Clannad release is based on the fan translation.
Why would you think it's not? A similar thing happened with the various releases of Final Fantasy IV, fan, GBA, and PSX. They were billed as redone translations, but what actually happened more often than not is that they took the original (often incorrect) translations and rewrote them, or in the fan translation's case especially, which was advertised as the definitive accurate completely redone retranslation, completely made shit up and inserted all kinds of weird memes and references.

Don't believe everything people tell you, especially when they're trying to advertise their product.
>>
>>14767400
Because it's not less effort. Because actual translators are valuable, rare, and expensive, while South Americans with access to Google Translate are cheap, plentiful, and can get them to that absolutely bare minimum quality level that SP's customer's require.
>>
>>14767421
But the argument is not that Clannad got retranslated using Google Translate, which is something I would find much more plausible. No, people are insisting Sekai used the fan translation, but then completely rewrote every single line of it so nobody notices it's really the fan translation. The effort required to do this would in all likelihood exceed the amount of effort required to even properly retranslate it. It just makes no sense.
>>
>>14767568
>The effort required to do this would in all likelihood exceed the amount of effort required to even properly retranslate it.

The assumption you're making here is retarded as fuck.
>>
>>14767421
>exact same number of lines to process
>could be done by people with less skill
>could be done all in a single language
>would take much more effort

What? This is like saying that it's less effort to just write your own thesis than to plagiarize someone else's. Or that it's more effort to trace art than to do your own original of equal quality.
>>
>>14767579
It may seem weird, but going through every single line and asking yourself 'how can I rephrase this so it doesn't resemble the original anymore?' is harder than going through every single line and translating it in the most obvious manner. It's like you're translating from English to English, except all the obvious word choices can't be used because it would otherwise resemble the original too much. It simply goes against how the brain works; once you read something, your brain wants to use those same words to express the same things, and you have to put in conscious effort to avoid using those words.

Do note that I'm not talking about normal editing work here; that's just rewriting the parts that sound awkward. To pull this off without people easily noticing (and being able to do a simple side-to-side comparison proving this is the case) requires a lot more effort.
>>
>>14767607
Except that it takes a specialized skill that very few people have to translate from Japanese to English, and it takes basic English competency to do what you're describing.

And, might I add, if you translate thousands of lines, and end up with two translations meaning the same thing, but only a couple times ending up being phrased the same way, that sure as fuck as a sign that they've gone out of their way to make them different.
>>
>>14767568
Finding a horde of editors for rewriting the reedited version of Clannad from Doki it's faster and cheaper than retranslating the whole thing.
>>
>>14767621
>Except that it takes a specialized skill that very few people have to translate from Japanese to English
>that very few people have

Lots of people have it, they just prefer to work in fields where they get paid and that are more respectable. Sorry but what sort of professional looks at his life's works and achievements and says, "you know what, I want to get into the cartoon porn business."
>>
>>14767795
Apparently Conjurer said that, since he went from manuals to porn games.
But yeah, the point stands. There are plenty of translators, but they wouldn't want to work for cartoon pron games. They don't pay well and putting them on a resume is questionable.
>>
>>14767819
>They don't pay well
>putting them on a resume is questionable.

You are literally working yourself into a field you will never be able to leave because putting "I translated little sister loli ntr visual novels" on your resume is not exactly a good thing, no matter how good your translation was. Light novels are soo much safer if you want to translate japanese.

Anime translators are getting more and more terrible.

Check out Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut this season, the translation is terrible every episode. The translator consistently makes mistakes ín recognizing subject and object of sentences.
Like MC telling his imouto:
>I won't make you be all alone. (I.e. I won't die.)
as
>Don't worry, I'll have others with me. (I.e. I won't be alone.)

I guess if this is the standard to get emplyed at Crunchy, I guess I'm fucking overqualified.
>>
>>14768042
Demand of qualified translators vastly outstrips availability, so the ones with actual skills get to set their price, while the part of the market unable to pay that price turns to unqualified people for cheap to try to fill the gap, whether it's SP, Crunchyroll, Techmo Koei, Bandai Namco, whoever. It's very obviously not just a matter of translators not wanting to work on loli porn.

>>
>>14769437

The issue isn't piracy, it's credit card fraud.

Someone had like a shitload of stolen CCard numbers and was running a script to register fake accounts from different IPs, make fraudulent purchases and harvest Steam keys. Days or weeks later we get hit with a chargeback which we get severely penalized for on top of losing the money from the sale.
>>
>>14769470
Why don't the payment processors go to the police with the information they have about credit card fraud instead of penalising an honest business?

Also btw I love you.
>>
>>14769489
Its merchant's responsibility to keep fraud levels below certain values specified in contract. Its surprising that MG wasn't hit with this earlier because they have zero anti-fraud protection on their site, they don't even check cardholder name — I used completely fake strings, not even resembling legit name for every game I bought (legit virtual card belonging to me with legit transaction I didn't chargeback, but still).
>>
>>14769545
Surely Mangagamer can go to Steam with the Steam keys they gave out and have them revoked?

>>
>>14769595
>If keys are resold, its not going to hurt perpetrators.
If you buy from an illegal reseller, you should accept the fact that you're unlikely to keep the game. If customers are regularly sanctioned from buying from illegal resellers, then the resellers name will become mud because customers won't want to use them anymore.
>>
>>14769618
Sure, but I presume most people calculate that risk into the price. I regularly order shit from China, and I know there's a chance I'll either get penalized by customs or never even receive my items. However, the low cost is attractive enough to offset those risks.

>>
>>14770295

Given that it's based on percentages of order numbers weighted to the top sales chart, estimates should be more or less as accurate as they were. It just becomes a question of how many of the estimated orders were made by bots that got banned, and I somehow doubt a bunch of g2a bots decided to buy gahkthun.

It does put yurirei's real numbers slightly into question, though.
>>
>>14770701

On the other hand, this inspires hope for humanity for those months where AJTilley games were rocking the sales charts in a manner that they absolutely should not have been if anyone involved had actual taste.
>>
>>14770717
Ya know, that actually might be the case. Which would be great as personally they have some of the worst games on MG's site and the fact they were doing so well was creepy. Not to mention I couldn't figure out how they were doing so well as everyone gave the games a pretty mediocre score and it wasn't a huge release or anything.

I do have to wonder how many total sales the bots did make. Are we talking in the hundreds or possibly even into the thousands?
>>
>>14770743

Just taking a quick look, I'd imagine it'd pretty significant. Just taking a look at the period from 10/16 to 11/23(a fairly dead range for mangagamer proper releases) where Divine Slice of Life was number 1 on the charts, we've got 1.2k sales. Give a quarter of that to divine slice of life and assume that atleast 50% were bots and you've got 150 bot sales.

Apparently Arunaru is translating Eve
>>
>>14778357
I don't think you have even the slightest understanding of what the 'vibrators' in Eve are.
>>
>>14778365
>>14778357
Eve will never be officially translated. It is too huge, there is too much porn, and the amount of work on the gameplay side with the images is nothing short of stagering. Your only hope is to trick Aroduc into doing it to be contrary.
>>
>>14778378
While it is unlikely, I don't think anybody could say "never".

Euphoria seemed to do well and when Haruka actually comes out, it may catch fire.
Things with a lot of porn may become popular in the future. Things with gameplay are already popular now. At some point, translating Eve may be considered profitable.

Steam might even allow 18+ one day which will allow many more titles to become more feasible to translate.
>>
>>14778394
>At some point, translating Eve may be considered profitable.
If Shin Koihime Musou is too much work to be profitable with all but guaranteed good sales, Eve doesn't stand a chance.

>Xseed will NEVER get my permission to use our translation. I have made that very clear to all the people involved in the project. I don't agree with their policy of stealing the work of fan translations. They have made it clear they had no intentions of working on Zero or AO (since according to them, they really aren't that important to the overall story). Financially it doesn't make sense for them to even care after the horrible release of Cold Steel. Literally 1 store in a 100 mile radius got a shipment and I know at least 20 people who are like me when it comes to buying games in store (and not online). Needless to say, other companies got their money for new games that week and now they don't even care to try to find it. Yep. I have no love lost for Xseed and only started working on these games because I knew they would never get an english release. But since I started, they seem to have really taken an interest in games that are getting fan translations (Brandish PSP, Xanadu Next). They think they can give people a little bit of money and they will jump for joy.

>They can't afford my crew. If I put a monetary price on it, it would be close to $250,000 per person in the team and there is at least 8 people working on it currently not to mention numerous people who also would deserve compensation for their contribution. People may think that is an extreme price and it may be. But it is my way of telling them they can go screw themselves.

It doesn't really matter at this point, the damage is done. Card processors really, really don't like chargebacks and often drop businesses who get too many. Even if MG is 100% found innocent by the police, the risk has already been proven to the processor.

MGs were likely already paying very high rates for carrying both digital and adult products (processors consider both higher risk). They may well have to do more than just remove steam keys e.g. having their funds held for longer, implement further fraud prevention measures or accepting even higher rates.
>>
>>14779592
It's just another child in the batshit crazy Falcom fandom that also spawned that dumbass Ys guy who thinks that as "project leader", that makes him the lynchpin of a massive translation project and that he is the owner of translator work.
>>
>>14779619

They've been using this payment processor for awhile without too many issues and it looks like a fairly small outfit. Hopefully they'll be able to work it out.

I'm more worried that all their money for the last few months might have been seized and they've been dropped and are currently struggling to find a new one in secret.

>It sold tens of thousands before it made it onto Steam, too. It used to be the best selling VN in the west, before Sakura Spirit.
Not sure if trolling or just stupid.
>>
>>14783212
The sad part is that I'm pretty sure it's stupid. IMHHW wasn't even available in the west before it was released on Steam, and it sure as fuck did not get tens of thousands of preorders direct from Moenovel.
>>
>>14783212
It sold a lot on Android/iOS too. Too lazy to check if that was before or after steam though.

But yeah, market the game and the casual crowd will buy it. They don't care that much about translation or editing quality.
>>
>>14783237
Its initial release was on Steam. The only way it could have sold any number greater than 0 in the west before that is if you're counting imports and preorders.
>>
>>14783221
IMHHW was on sale for about a year and a half before it even went on Steam. So you're completely wrong.
>>
>>14782917
After this and PE success one would guess there is a market for these kind of games. But seems like everyone except Dovac either braindead retards or too busy sucking their elitist translator's dicks. Well. their loss I guess.
>>
>>14783323
Go spend 30 seconds checking release dates before you pull shit out of your ass. The game first came out in English in May 2013, then IOS/Android in June 2014, and then lastly on Steam in November 2014.
>>
>>14783516
IMHHW sold so well because its
1. old. More time to accumulate sales
2. Cheap. Been on sale down to like 5-10 dollars multiple times before
Thats essentially up to 1/7th - 1/9th of the normal price VN of 35-45$.
3. Long and good aside from translation errors and bad prose which most people cant notice.
4. on steam. easy to buy.
>>
>>14783729
It has 100k - 500k downloads on Android. And even though it was a free app that originally required IAP or waiting to unlock other routes, the big download figure is pretty impressive, considering how bad discoverability is for Android app store. Somehow moenovel managed to market it right and got a lot of eyeballs on their visual novel, way more exposure than any other Japanese one.
>>
>>14783744
What I don't get is why Moenovel had this success and hasn't released anything else.

>>
>>14783782

You know, those things they had such a hard time getting right with SC. The tools were in plain site also, so they would not have had to rely much on Falcom here either (another problem they seemed to have).
>Do we plan on doing 3rd? We have no intentions of stepping on anybody's toes. Xseed has not given a confirmation on the status of this that I know of at this point (and I don't follow what they are doing since reading about the cry baby translator holding a knife to his chest. Whether his argument about inaccuracy/appropriateness of official translation is correct, don't know, at very least context is needed to decide this.

What's funny is the really long string of replies where he keeps arguing about doing a translation "TRUE TO THE ORIGINAL" to the point of silliness. All this about preserving the phrase "at present moment"
>>

His translation is accurate if you're translating with a dictionary, but you'd translate the line the same way as on that screenshot if you're a proper translator and know the nuances of Japanese and English writing.

But what can you expect from an ESL whose knowledge of Japanese likely amounts to google translate?

He's not correct here. He wants things to sound weeb. The appropriate response is to tell him to 'Fuck off.'
>>
>>14789297
It gets across the same information in a more natural way to English. It's the same as pitching a fit because someone didn't write
"This is the first time I've run this hard." (Typical Japanese structure/phrasing)
and instead wrote
"I've never run this hard before."
>>
>>14789316
I like when things feel a bit more natural. It feels so odd reading manga that use "big brother" as someones cousin. Close family sure, but when they have other parents I'd prefer oniichan just for the "oh it is a Japanese thing" feeling instead of awkwardness of random people saying brother.
>>
>>14789597
A good translation would just use their name, like any actual English speaker would.

>>
>>14789623
In this particular case it was actually used for its otakuness. Which would mean a translator would have to find a nerdy way to show affection in English.

But yes, if it was a pretty standard context with no other meanings, the name should work fine.
