that feel when you never really dipped below 1500.

I was above 1620 at some point and now I've been dropping and have almost gone below 1500. What a fucking slump.

It's a hard habit to break. I once hit riichi through muscle memory when the one tile I was waiting on were all in my opponent's discards.

>>14265504
> how to get better though?
I’d say
1. Learn tile efficiency, cause this is what divides you from high level pros the most. They just make their hands faster hence depriving you from your chance to get points.
2. Think fast. You must already know your waits, possible waits if a particular useful tile comes and what you’re going to discard before it’s your turn. But make haste slowly—don’t discard a tile from your hand without looking at what you took from the wall. You may discard a lone 9 man when you just pulled 7 man which would form a kanchan.
3. Be ready to drop completion of your hand in case if anybody has riichi’d. Especially if it’s the East. Don’t believe in half-safe tiles—they exist only for case when you don’t have genbutsu. And even then it may be as effective, as discarding a random tile based on what you can guess from his discard.
4. Never believe you can understand something looking at the discard of a closed hand. If it lacks tiles of one particular suit it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe to discard tiles from the other suits—there still may be anything.

I still have problems with #3. I need a slap on the face to stop. Especially if my points are low or the lowest. If you’re like me, don’t be nervous, believe that each hand can become a mangan or higher and don’t open your hands. I once won being on the last place on the last round, but winning all five or six successive rounds as a dealer (I don’t rememeber how much is allowed by the rules).

Is there an easy way to remember scoring tables or is it just a matter of reciting scoring tables until it comes naturally?

guys does tenhou reverse the rules for pinfu where you need to have a closed wait?

i could swear it sometimes doenst give me pinfu and sometimes it does.
>>
>>14266159
After a while some numbers start to seem "natural", like a payment of 4000 feels weird, but 3900 feels alright because you have seen it so many times before.

Then you just remember that 1-30 is worth 1000 for non-dealer.
From there it doubles with each extra han, so
1000-2000-4000 (wait, that feels wrong, 3900)-8000 (also feels wrong, its 7700).

At 1-40 the starting value is 1300, so you just go and double it every time
1300-2600-5200-8000
1-50 is 1600, and if you know how scoring math works, it means 2-25 is also worth 1600. From there its also straight up doubling - 1600-3200-6400-8000
1-60 is the same as 2-30, so that one is easy.

At 70 minipoints you are pretty screwed. 80 minipoints is 2x40, 90 is 3x30, 100 is 2x50

So this covers all possible non-dealer hands except for 70 and 110 minipoints, which are extremely rate.

Now, as dealer, the starting 1-30 point is worth 1500. So, by the same logic as above, 1500-2900 (yeh, gotta remember. 3000 payment doesnt exist by ron)-5800-11600

1.40 starts at 2000 and is similar to non-dealer 1.60 which in turn is similar to 2.30, so you have that covered.

Dealer 2.25 and 1.50 are the same as for non-dealer but multiplied by 1.5x. Since non-dealer payments are powers of two, multiplying by 1.5 is easy.

The same tricks as above are applied for hands above 50 minipoints.
>>
>>14266455
No, you need to have a double-sided wait. Also you can't be waiting on a pair.
>>
>>14266455
Yes, tenhou scoring always works exactly as expected with no error.
Have you checked if your pair was yakuhai-giving honor tiles? These give 2 minipoints and as such dont give pinfu.

Using the formula directly every time makes you take ages to calculate the value because of the number of steps it takes.
Knowing how it works though is very handy as you can use many tricks to minimise the number of values you need to memorise.

So I've been playing really well for the last 5 games, but always got bumped to second place after South 2 because the flow just suddenly turned against me. And then at last game's S4, I was leading with 70K, thinking to myself that I'll finally get 1st place, BUT THEN THE FUCKING OUYA, AT 4TH PLACE WITH 7K POINTS, GOT A FUCKING IPPATSUMO SUUANKO AT THE START OF THE GAME. >>
>>14268057
Playing well means minimizing your losses even when the flow is against you. If you dropped to second because you pushed hands you should've folded, or because you folded hands that you should've pushed, then that's not playing well.

Try playing five hundred games rather than just five, and if you actually play well then the results will show it.
>>
>>14268093
>implying one can go against the flow

>>
>>14268127
I didn't say you should've somehow prevented that suuankou.

People who say they played well (over the course of a mere five games, no less) but they only lost because of flow usually don't play as well as they think. You won't improve if you have an inflated view of your own skill. I don't know you and I don't know how good you are, and that's why I'm saying that if you played more than five games then in the long run your stats will reflect your true skill level.
>>
i cant get over the fact how little hands you can actually make.

so little combination yaku. and shit like ippeikou cant even be made open.

also does san ankou need to be completely closed hand or does it only need 3 closed triplets

>>

>also does san ankou need to be completely closed hand or does it only need 3 closed triplets
3 closed triplets. But that also means your triplets cannot include ron tile. For example you have
111 333 77 99 closed and 456 open chi.
If you get 7 or 9 by tsumo it's san ankou. If you call ron on 7 or 9 it's not san ankou.

That one is some mindblowing sentence. Discarding a winning tile isn’ ta misconception, and ‘discarding a yaku-completing tile’ tries to describe situation when you just have no yaku. hat could be said shorter and clearer with ‘No yaku– no tenpai’.

What's the acceptable cut-off for actually caring about what other people are discarding?
I mean, for closed hands it's not like you can form opinions about them, aside suji and stuff, but when should I be realistically thinking "Can't make this hand, he might be waiting on my discard"?
10th turn?
>>
>>14287357
You should generally assume tenpai when:
- first row of discards with three calls
- second row with two calls
- third row with one call

Aside from that, watch out for when people discard tiles from inside their hand. Usually those areas are the most dangerous in the mid-late game. If you're aware of how many tiles in those areas you can see on the table, then you can narrow down the likely shapes that the player discarded that tile from.

>>
>>14299699
An ankou is a completely closed triplet, meaning you had to draw all three tiles yourself. For example, with the hand 111 333 555 78 99m, you have three closed triplets already in your hand, so ron will give you sanankou. If you had 222 444 66 88m 234p, ron would mean that you only had two closed triplets, but tsumo would give you sanankou.

When a yaku is said to only count closed, does it mean the yaku itself has to be closed, or your hand has to be?

Let's say I called a triplet, and I have an iipeikou in my hand, will iipeikou count, since it's "Closed", or will it be null because my hand is already opened by the pon?

Three threes or fours of a kind, that are entirely drawn from the wall. (The other
sets and pair need not to be closed.)

Thanks google
>>
>>14315760
That's what I'm asking though
Sanankou is noted as "Closed only" on yaku lists, but the hand can be open if the sanankou itself is 'hidden'.

Does the same go for iipeikou?
Or any other yaku like that?
If I draw myself all the tiles for the yaku BUT my hand is open by a pon or chi, does the yaku still count as long as it doesn't use any of the called tiles?

San ankou means 3 concealed triplets, so as long as you have 3 CONCEALED TRIPLETS it counts, it's a special case

It’s not that rare. Just a case of a hand developing from toitoi or chiitoitsu. I think that one of the problems a novice has is opening hand too early. You often deal to others hands→you lose points → you want to get them back with a fast hand… opening it. And this is wrong, because closed hand has potential for many more han. I’m trying to keep my hand closed until I really need to to open it—I see fast hands on the table or it comes to the end of the game. Somebody has riichi’d and I want his 1k stick. And this is indeed wrong again.

I've been thinking about it but my online friend would definitely want to play together instead of practicing offline. The problem is that Tenhou's time limit is way too strict for beginners. I was going to try Touhou Unreal Mahjong 4G but you need a serial key to play online, and it hasn't been cracked yet.

What does Zung Jung do better than Riichi? From a bit of googling, it looks like it does a great job of simplifying the nonsense that's present in a lot of other forms of Chinese mahjong, but Riichi still looks more fun. In particular, I think no furiten kills off a huge amount of the strategy that makes Riichi so engaging.

After learning Riichi mahjong, I can't go back to Hong Kong style anymore. It's too simplistic and boring, with way more luck involved. Anyone play different variants of mahjong here or only Riichi?
>>
>>14354866
we all weaboos so only riichi
>>
>>14354866
>with way more luck involved
Are you serious? Riichi mahjong is the most RNG-based variation in the world. It has dead wall, doras, aka doras, ura doras, riichi discards, different pure luck based bonuses as double riichi, ippatsu, etc.
>>
>>14355686
Even with that there's a lot more strategy involved. Those things you mentioned can add up, but it doesn't make up the entire game. Hong Kong mahjong boils down to being lucky enough to have enough pairs in your starting hand so you declare pon. You haven't seen pon palace until you've played HK mahjong.

There's absolutely no strategy involved, because there aren't enough variations in patterns like Riichi (iipeikou, tanyao, pinfu, etc) that make the game a lot more flexible. You need 3 fan to win off a hand (try doing that without tanyao, pinfu, or pretty much any yaku with sequences), instead of one yaku like in Riichi. Most of the other winnings hands are entirely based off luck, ones that would be worth yakuman in Riichi. There's no sort of pressure, baiting, or anything, just pure luck.

Does calling an open Kan break the 'closed' condition for triplets on sanankou and suuankou?

You still have a triplet you completed 'closed', but does the fact that the kan was called open ruin that?
>>
>>14362580
Why would you ruin your closed triplet by calling a kan? It's like you don't want that suuankou
>>
>>14362614
That's what I'm asking. If calling the Kan effectively ruins the closed triplet since it's an open point.
>>
>>14362619
Well, it ruins the triplet, no matter if it's a suu or san. I mean, it literally stops being concealed, so no more san for you, unless you still have 3 triplets in your hand, then yes it's still a san, but if you just ruined a triplet that means you had a sou, and should feel bad about it.

Either they become my designated pair, or if I can, I go for hon istu.

Also, in regards to the match now.
>Keeping a pon'd on honor tile while dealing into an obvious chin itsu
I can't even begin to understand the thought train that led to that.

> This always puzzles me.
Wow, like, really?
>>
>>14364869
Toitoi or chanta are decent reasons. Big\little four winds or all honor hands are open yakuman.

And of course, denying other players tiles and getting into a non-yaku tenpai is a valid defense.
>>
>>14364869
Depends on the situation. If I can go to a quick honitsu or yakuhai I may utilize it. If the wind tiles aren't really safe yet I can keep them for defense plus it can be kept in a pinfu hand.

Really? Honitsu, chanta, toitoi, that one yakuman are the ones I can think of right now. Discarding them right away is what puzzles me

How do you join private lobbies from the windows client?
I found an option to enter by ID but it just opens a chat window

Because Gonzo passed the ball to Gokumi.
You can even notice Saki's skirt reaches her knees instead of half her butt in the following seasons.

Happened to me twice last game. Luckily no one noticed because someone finished with a cheap hand. That would have been embarrasing.

Any suggestions for where to learn Richi Majhong?

Honestly, Akagi isn't that good of a resource for behinners. Akagi himself plays very different kind of mahjong and that's the main amusement factor for the story there. I guess you could just take note of what everyone else does and do that, it's probably bettet than following in Akagis footsteps, but still most people he plays do play weird mahjong too. It makes for a great story and intersting scenarios. But I don't think beginners would benefit much from watching/ reading Akagi. If anything they would probably pick some bad habits.
I'm not a native english speaker. What I wrote is pretty clunky, but I hope you understand.
>>
>>14372272
Not for learning, but more for the excitement of it. I wouldn't play mahjong if it wasn't for akagi and tetsuya
>>
Do everyone play only Tenhou here?

Anyone playing Mahjong of Walkure R18?

Isn't that pay2win? More people should play Elf All Stars Datsui Jan 3, it has netplay and you get to strip the loser.
>>
>>14372948
Not really, from what I can tell you pay for more play tickets (you're only given a fixed amount daily), decoration, character cards that really don't do anything gameplay-wise in multiplayer games, and collectible tiles you collect to unlock H-scenes.

I suspect it of giving better tiles to higher-leveled players in multiplayer matches though, but that might just be my amateur-ness screwing me up.
>>
>>14372986
>I suspect it of giving better tiles to higher-leveled players
Yeah that's what I heard before.
I'll try it anyway if the h-scenes are good.

I've been playing standard Chinese mahjong for a while and just read the EMA's riichi rules.
I don't understand riichi maajan very well.
How is a yakuman different from a yaku? What is a double yakuman? Why is there a difference between fan and yaku? What do red fives and dora do?
>>
>>14372997
Yakuman are effectively yaku that are worth 13 fan. (although yakuman is also the name of the scoring category for 13+ fan, which has 8000 base points, which means 32000 points for nondealer and 48000 for dealer)

Double yakuman is worth twice as much as yakuman, so 16000 base points, so 64000 for nondealer and 96000 for dealer.

Yaku give one or more fan. Red fives and dora also give one fan each. You need yaku to win, just having fan from red fives and dora isn't enough. Fan determines the score of the hand, together with fu for low-fan hands.

>together with fu for low-fan hands
Now I understand why fu and fan are separate here, and why yaku and fan are separate.

I'm also very excited to see the furiten mechanic when I start playing riichi mahjong today.
Do you understand why riichi mahjong has only has east and south prevalent winds, rather than all four? It could be just to have a shorter game, but I may as well ask.

Where can I play Washizu mahjong online?
>>
>>14374272
It's probably just a length thing, technically speaking if you wanted to play more rounds in a game or needed to go into extra rounds you go West for the third and North for the fourth.
>>
>>14374534
Yeah, chinese mahjong typically has all four rounds, with all four winds. Thus, a game is 16 hands rather than 8.
>>
Finally could play some tenhou. And didn't get massacred!

What does it mean when I say "No multiplier"

I have two 7 of character and I had 4 and 5 of bamboo and there was a 3 of bamboo discarded.
>>
>>14374788
It means you have no yaku. You need at least one to win.

Don't open your hand mindlessly unless you know what you're going for. In general, beginners tend to call too much. Try focusing on closed hands and riichi instead.

Everybody does that, only those new to the game would think you're retarded
