Finland relies heavily on IT, and English is the language of IT. Even on my workplace I'm technically supposed to speak English to my Finnish colleagues because that's the language of the company.

Finnish is a young enough language that we don't have any French-like hangups over losing our ""empire status"" if we just admit English is more useful. That's why everyone in Espoo already speaks it. It wasn't an official language when I started my English lessons in public school in the 2nd grade and that still happened.

Sorry but I don't believe you. In hundreds of years maybe, but not within our lifetimes. I have plenty of family who live abroad and cousing whose primary language isn't Finnish and they all act decisively Finnish.

And to be honest the parts of Finnish culture that are tied to the language I won't miss. It's that keskiolut and lenkkimakkara part. I'm happy to see it go, I was never a part of it in the first place.

You realize what this means in practice is like translating the government websites to English? I'm having a hard time seeing anyone get ridiculed for translating webpages to English.
