And it's done on anything that would relate to a person of any gender.
It's done on masculine nouns only because our grammar rules state that if there's at least 1 male in the group, all the nouns have to be male as well. Only if all of the group in question is female then the nouns can be female as well, so you can see that we just use male nouns for everything as default when addressing a group.
