You can work hard, but unless you have the right friends and networks, you probably won't earn much. Decent paying jobs in Australia is 90% landing a position because you know people who can pull strings. Trade and corporate jobs are the worst in this regard, because it pretty much boils entirely down to who you grew up with and who you work with, not what you actually do.

Nepotism here is impressively disgusting.
